I had a woman today tell me she had no idea that being pregnant can permanently harm your body and I can’t help wondering which part of this is personal ignorance or a societal lie and glorification of pregnancy.
A girl died in one of my allergy groups yesterday because after a reaction at school, no staff had access to the locked up epipen as the nurse wasn’t there that day.
Epi-pens are meant to be on someone’s person at all times, not locked away. I hope they’re sued into oblivion.
Becoming a parent and learning about car seat safety has made me very aware that a lot of adults, mostly women, do not meet the weight and height requirement to not have a booster seat.
I’ll say it again: Don’t use euphemisms like “hospital beds” when what you actually mean is nursing staff.
The hospitals have not run out of furniture.
This is what being a millennial is like. “Please get 12 years worth of certifications. Also, we’ll only pay you minimum wage.” Also, “why haven’t you bought a house yet??”
Man the ratio on this. My view of adoption changed entirely when I found out that most birth mothers would keep their babies if given only about $4000 and resources. This company and others charges rich prospective parents $50,000 for this baby, and the mother usually isn’t paid.
Just in case many didn’t realize this “Canadian Frontline Nurses” is not a real nursing organization, does not speak for 99.9% of nurses, & frankly is a hate group.
It is started by 2 nurses who participated in the US insurrection & were FIRED for their antimask demonstrations.
I’ve known and seen short women driving, but a woman who was driving behind me today could only see over the steering wheel by tilting her head almost completely back.
I wish our culture was more open or realistic about death & dying.
I follow a woman who is dying of cancer, and anytime she says “I am dying of cancer” people get veryyy upset in her comments.
She had no idea where the front of her car was in relation to mine and was tailgating very closely during the bumper to bumper traffic and she probably didn’t even know how close she was given her line of sight
It needs to be said again. If you as an employer cannot compete with a $2000/month government assistance program, you are not an employer. You are a poverty exploiter.
Congratulations to the BC nurses who just got a 2% wage increase and are getting an extra $5 an hour danger pay for the month of April 2020. It’s nice to see that nurses are valued in other provinces.
No average person likes to see excessive police or military presence in a country that is a democracy.
I think the vast majority of us agree though, that Canada is a democracy, and a group with a written agenda that says “to overthrow the Prime Minister” should be dealt with.
I’m confused, are Albertan’s happy the price of oil is up or not? Seems like ya’ll want it both ways, good oil & gas money and low prices at the pumps.
Just reiterating what healthcare workers have been saying for over a year now:
Nurses are specialized to their areas.
You cannot replace ICU nurses just by “redeploying them” from other areas.
The skills required to run machines like ECMO, CRRT etc are very advanced.
@DrJenGunter
He was the producer, who also coincidently hired un-unionized safety staff that had already walked off the set once before due to safety issues
I am absolutely sick of other healthcare professionals outright stating their distain for nurses, insulting our intelligence, or contributing to misogyny. I worked hard for my degree and I have a very specialized skill set and I am worthy of respect from other HCWs.
Controversial opinions from an obstetrics nurse of 11 years:
Your best labour support person may not be the father of the baby. It also probably isn’t your mother in law.
Men who say they aren’t interested in women over 30, around the age when most women develop self-esteem, standards, and boundaries, are really telling on themselves.
And since a lot of you are being pedantic, I never said hospitals can’t run out of physical space as well; However, the majority of times politicians promise hospital beds, space, and capacity, it isn’t about the literal physical space rather the staffing it needs.
Whenever she says “I am dying,” which is true, people freak out and comment things like “you’re giving up!” And “don’t use the word dying!”
Which honestly is disrespectful to her experience. Why are people so upset by that word, especially by someone who has accepted this?
If I die of a respiratory virus I caught at work while the health employer insists I don’t need N95s in positive patient rooms, consider this an advanced directive to my family to please sue their asses.
I deserve to be safe at work, including from infectious diseases.
There’s this TikTok trend of women describing the worst thing their (usually now ex) husband’s did while they were in labour & most of it is just so sad to me. I see it. Every. Single. Day. At my job. I’d say 60-70% of women settle for shitty men & it’s incredibly heartbreaking
My favourite thing to do lately when I am told a sexist, racist, homophobic (etc) joke is to reply with “I don’t get it..” and make them explain why they think it’s funny.

There are people who will literally glare at you for just having a child near them. My 1yo was talking to himself in the grocery cart at the store and a woman next to us glared and said “for f*cks sake”
There are very angry adults in this world and children are easy targets.
@redbirdcarpent1
Bodily harm doesn’t mean you die, although childbirth is the leading cause of death for women in many countries still. Maybe research pregnancy related osteoperosis, spinal fractures, pregnancy related tooth decay, hair loss, symphysis pubic dysfunction, pelvic floor collapse
I had to prove my immunization status for my nursing jobs and my nursing degree. Requiring another vaccination for employment should be an expectation for healthcare workers, and I think I speak for most of us: We are fine with anti-vax healthcare workers leaving the profession.
This organization is bankrolled by white nationalist hate groups.
These people have insulted healthcare workers, patients, and inhibited care.
If you protest at a hospital you are not “advocating for freedom”, you are a piece of shit.
So Boris Johnston has resigned, but not really, because he wants to get married at Downing Street; and Jason Kenney has resigned, but not really, because he wants to meet the pope.
Got it.
No one is saying she didn’t make an egregious error. She deserved to have her nursing license taken & be responsible in a malpractice trial.
But to make medical errors a criminal offence with threatened prison time affects all healthcare workers in a chilling way
#RaDondaVaught
I’ve been noticing the last few days that the only people claiming nurses or teachers are paid too much money are men.
Supporting female-dominated professions is a feminist issue.
This gov’t & their supporters on cutting public sector wage jobs have their misogyny showing.
Not even 2 weeks ago I was being called greedy, lazy, & entitled by Albertans on this platform who support the UCP. Today everything is “Thank you nurses! We appreciate you!” You can’t have it both ways. If Im supposed to bow & thank Shandro for delaying laying off nurses I’m not
Our medical system would collapse without nurses.
No one else is technically qualified to do most of the tasks, roles & responsibilities that nurses do, and physicians would be the first to tell you that.
Don’t pit healthcare workers against one another, we’re on the same team
Kenney now says “people with a government paycheque should think about other industries”
He doesn’t even hide his disdain for public sector workers.
Ironic given that is the only paycheque he’s gotten almost all his life.
I think the Canadian ban on single use plastics such as grocery bags was fine in principle, but I think has caused far more waste in execution.
Cloth bags are more carbon intensive to create, and if every household is like mine we have probably upwards of 50 bags now.
I feel like I’ve been a broken record about this topic lately— but I can’t help but be discouraged. My husband and I are a physician and nurse in our early 30s. My husband is looking for the best place to have a practice. Given what is happening in Alberta I don’t see us staying.
I’m very curious where Poilievre is getting his ideas from. The conservative oil rig workers go on EI probably 2-3 times a year. Anyone over the age of 40 (again more of a conservative base) has at least some concern about receiving their Canada pension plan.
I do not want to repost their advertisement, but they are named as organizers for hospital protests that are planned again for this week.
Know that if you see these demonstrations by hospitals, they do not speak for healthcare workers.
Good morning!
It is 10am and I have blocked over 100 accounts threatening Canadian parents who are excited that Moderna is now approved for children under age 5.
This is outrageous.
@TravisToewsUCP
you claim you can’t afford Alberta nurses making $36-48/hour and now you’re hiring contract nurses to replace us at $55-75/hour?
Happy to chat with all the lovely people telling me that I deserve a wage reduction because of “fiscal restraint”
I love when people who have one child who sits quietly and is easily entertained by a book think that’s a reflection of their parenting and not just that little person’s temperament — and then give parenting advice to those of us that have to lock & bolt everything in the house
The Ottawa hospital is offering med students to work on units for $170-$200/h to be supervised by RNs, the top wage of which in Ontario is $49/h.
Tell me you hate and disrespect nurses, without telling me you hate and disrespect nurses.
@OttawaHospital
I’m actually really enjoying the vaccine rules at restaraunts. I don’t even have to ask people if they’re immunized, I just invite them to a restaraunt.
I once saw a husband telling his wife in labour that she needed to think about how hard this was on him. That wasn’t even the worst thing I’ve seen men tell women during birth.
My colleague got called “a communist” when informing an Albertan they were positive for covid19 and they needed to isolate.
My contact tracing friend was sworn at by business managers for informing them they were on outbreak status.
This is not ok.
All of us are going to die unless you believe your faith will take you off this earth a different way.
And as the saying goes: Nothing is certain except death and taxes.
What goes through the mind of someone who believes hospitals are faking numbers, who believe that doctors would forge death certificates, and that millions of healthcare workers are all “in on it”?
How could anyone actually believe that is true?
Two of my brothers are being redeployed to ICU this week in Alberta due to Covid surges and my Instagram is full of people in images with their friends breaking current public health orders.
I don’t remember a time I’ve ever been this discouraged as a healthcare worker.
I hate everytime there is some “feel good” story of parents who pass out earplugs to 200 passengers on a flight when they are travelling. It sets a ridiculous standard & normalizes people being intolerant of infants in public.
No one owes you a baby-less society.
@emilykmay
Or people who parented small children a million years ago and have a very distorted memory of the fact. Apparently their children all walked at 7 months, potty trained at 8 months, and never, ever, cried.

This. I had an X-ray tech try and refuse me a hand xray because I didn’t know the date of my last menstrual period. Even if I was pregnant YOU STILL FIX BROKEN BONES. I’ve never had a good experience with the radiology department as a female patient.
I think when you see the circle of life more around you, there is a better understanding and acceptance of it. I went to probably 1-2 funerals a year growing up at church. Many of my adult friends now attend a funeral for the first time when it is an immediate family member.
My family is Mennonite. My dead aunts, uncles and grandparents who were still in the culture had their bodies preserved by the family on ice inside the house. My parents even have morbid pictures of this process. The community also made their own coffins and dug their own graves.
Today our premier was seen wearing an N95 mask to visit hope mission. The premier has also stood behind AHS saying that COVID-19 is droplet spread & that an N95 is only needed for procedures that may generate aerosol particles. What’s good for you isn’t good for me apparently.
I heard someone today again stating what has been repeated many times over and over on social media and in person, that the percentage of people who die of covid are “all old or sick”.
And I wept.
Where did our compassion go?
How did we get here?

@bethechange1682
Based on the shock in these comments I sometimes forget that people who don’t work in healthcare don’t realize how callous many humans are, and how extreme some people feel grief and attempt to avoid it. I have seen similar behaviour like this in my nursing career as well.
I hope fragile masculinity goes out of style soon. I have a female friend who makes 4X as much as her minimum wage husband, yet he wants her to take days off work when he’s working to take care of their kids. People claiming we’ve reached equality as women are very mistaken.
One of the first things I learned in my healthcare career is that if a test or procedure is *not* going to change anything, and not going to change management— you don’t do that test.
Apparently saying this makes me a terrible person on the internet today.
@redbirdcarpent1
— and that’s all with normal pregnancies and deliveries. I know women who have needed lifelong dialysis after pregnancy, liver failure, heart failure and death post pregnancy due to blood clots and eclampsia.
Pregnancy increases your chance of death from baseline substantially
@RNSuperHero
It makes me concerned that nurses are this uncomfortable with the function of breasts. I’m fairly certain said coworker also was covered while doing it
I had an old friend from Switzerland share a video on social media about how Jason Kenney has been suppressing protester rights in Alberta with Bill 1 — just so you all know what Alberta is known for around the world right now.
It’s interesting how female dominated professions are the ones usually asked to take pay cuts or zero pay raises to “take one for the team” or because of the economy.
And he has a sold out show in Calgary going for $700 per ticket for resale and can’t get tickets to even sell for $80 in Toronto.
It sounds like Calgary has a toxic masculinity problem.
@cathmckenna
Peterson is a misogynist and a homophobe. He’s a pedant who dishes noxious bromides that incels find comfort in. He should be accountable for the harm he causes.
