So in ten minutes the evil genius who is one of our GP anaesthetists (with a PhD in diaphragmatic mechanics) increased our rural hospitals ventilator capacity from one to nine!!!
I am 66 years old. I have heart disease. I am still working in the ER. I am seeing patients with Covid. I am at higher risk but love my job and my community. I deserve a safe work environment. I deserve to be protected. There is no vaccine in sight.

A physician for 43 years, an emergency physician for (no mumble) forty two years. I would have walked through a minefield on my ass to get my first vaccination and now I am the proud owner of three Moderna vaccinations. Thank you science.
#GetVaccinatedPlease
I am distressed by all this talk of people being on their own during this next (and last) phase of the pandemic.
Let me be clear. You are not alone. Canada's emergency physicians are staffing the department 24/7 and will do our very best to help you navigate the next chapter.
Feeling extremely fortunate as of five minutes ago. Have been waiting for three weeks for prostate biopsy results and truly reconciled to my fate. Just heard that the biopsy results showed no cancer and I am thankful beyond words.
So I have hesitated to post this. Last weekend, the child of a friend of mine committed suicide. The child lived in downtown Ottawa. Yes, the child was depressed and chronically troubled but saw the so-called Freedom Convoy as a signal that the end of the world was near.
So off goes my 94 year old Perth patient - a veteran and a great Canadian -for emergency surgery in Napanee. No surgery available locally, in Kingston, Brockville, or Ottawa. This is

So for those of you who would portray this as fun and games; Bouncy castles, face painting, fireworks and BBQ's, I would like to say to you, on behalf of my friend, a big fuck you.
Apparently, some basement dwelling keyboard warrior was unhappy when I posted a picture of me during my time in the service. So, just for fun, I'm going to do it again and say that I was proud to have served.

He's not my favourite Prime Minister but he is Canada's Prime Minister and he was staying in one of the most expensive cities in the world. Where did you expect him to stay? At a fucking Travel Lodge in Bristol?
It’s confirmed.
Justin Trudeau spent $6000 of Canadians’ hard-earned paycheques to galivant around London and stay in the luxurious River Suite at the Corinthia Hotel.
Sign to make him pay it back:
I was recently and briefly approached by the CBC to come on a national radio show on ER wait times. I painted a national portrait that was decidedly bleak and not very reassuring.
Here's the thing. I love this show. Watch it all the time. Every politician who has ever been on it has had the good grace to laugh at themselves. With Mr. Poilievre, not a fucking chance.
Tells me all I need to know.

So the five day closure of the Perth ER has now surpassed ten days with no definitive end yet in sight. This is
@fordnation
's Ontario where the most basic of societal needs are unmet and our political "leaders" hide.
In loving memory of my beloved child and partner in crime. She died six years ago; it feels like yesterday.
Longing for the day that we will all be reunited.
Lives Lived: Hilary Drummond, 28 /via
@globeandmail
So this piece of work has the tears of thousands of Canadians on her shoulders.
Her little trucking Freedom convoy caused the suicide death of a friend's daughter.
Those tears are perhaps more significant.
Today marks the fifth anniversary of the death of my beloved child.
I was so much the better for knowing such a remarkable woman; I am broken and lost without her.
Carleton Place ER closing tonight and again and unexpectedly. Three ERs closed in Eastern Ontario this weekend and this Health Minister, with her eyes on a long term solution fails to acknowledge the present crisis. She needs to go. Honestly she needs to go.
A truly exhausting 24 hours as our hospital administration announced the closure of the emergency department I have loved and nurtured for 39 years and then suddenly changed their minds.
Sylvia Jones the MOH spewing nonsense now. She blamed the Liberals and NDP for the current staffing shortages and funding in the Health care sector. This after being in power 5.5 years. Bragging about beds and equipment that do not treat people. She’s the worst.
#SV4A
Closure of Perth ER hits close to home. Patient arrives at my office in acute respiratory distress. Delay in seeking care. A three minute transfer to the ER is now a twenty- five minute transfer. With each passing day of
@fordnation
silence I am getting angrier
A few thoughts on the hospital protests;
To those of us on the pointy end of the health care stick - emergency services - these protests are both disturbing and hurtful but more than that they are wrong.
Bouncy castle my ass. The stupid fuckers at that occupation cost my friend his daughter by suicide, so those who lent succour and support to them at the time and those Conservatives who try to whitewash and minimize the whole affair can just go fuck themselves.
There had already been one attempt on the PM’s life (aka ‘friendly sausage maker’). There were nazi and confederate flags at the rally, and signs with nooses on them. The PM’s security detail would have been negligent to let him wade into that crowd.
Mask mandates? I have a moral obligation to provide my staff a safe working environment. Regardless of government edicts, in my office masks will continue to be worn by both staff and patients until I am convinced otherwise.
As the first ministers meet to demand more money for health care, let's remind them that as individual provinces they haven't done a very good job fulfilling the national dream of equitable access to emergency health care.
Today is their 34th birthday. Imagine that. Born at 29 weeks. A bittersweet day with the loss of Hilary but a day I will never forget. Courageous wife and three little fighters. All have brought such joy to my life.
So this is health care in Ontario in 2022!
@SylviaJonesMPP
Elderly patient of mine presents to ER with blood in urine. Ultrasound shows a probable kidney tumor. CAT scan cannot be performed for three to four months!!!
A 3 -4 month wait to confirm a cancer and somehow this is OK?
Premier Ford
@fordnation
. The good people of Perth have always voted Conservative. It's time you put our people first, for once. Our hospital ER is closed and you have said nothing. Not one word of encouragement; not one word of acknowledgment. Do better. Come to Perth
The reality is however that there is no balance to be struck on dysfunctional and unsafe emergency departments - they aren’t safe and they are dysfunctional and any emergency physician anywhere in this country will say the same thing
On CTV National News tonight to talk about the crisis in our nation's ERs. 12 hour waits to be seen by a physician, two or three days to be admitted and left to rot in a hallway and people dying in waiting rooms, yes it's a crisis.
So Christmas morning for me was a high heart rate, a low blood pressure, a sense of impending doom, an ambulance ride through the snow drifts and a several hour stay in my local ER but not as a physician! Through it all I was just so grateful to our emergency services. Thank you!
So here's the deal. No acknowledgment of the ER crisis, no sense of urgency, no plan to immediately stabilize the ER nursing workforce and no commitment to a new culture of safety.
We're screwed.
Everything is fine. Everything is a success said no one in Ontario Health Care, except for its Minister of Health
@SylviaJonesMPP
. The most unbelievable interview I have heard in quite awhile
I have been a Coroner in Ontario since 1993 - 30 years - and sadly it appears that my time is coming to an end not because I want it to but because the Office of the Chief Coroner is being unreasonable in its excessive demands on my time.
Premier Ford
@fordnation
. For the love of God please acknowledge this crisis in health care delivery and show us you care. Silence, I’m afraid, isn’t golden.
Courtesy of Apple Air Tags found my wife's purse in a ditch, 5 km west of Carleton Place. No wallet, no credit cards, no phone but both sets of car keys were there.
This is the woman involved.
Perhaps when speaking to a reporter today I shouldn’t have said, with respect to the general status of health care, “We’re all fucked” but I did and likely because it’s true. There goes my New Year’s resolution!
Well let me help you out with that. As an emergency physician of longstanding, and one who has been in a leadership position of one form or another for over thirty years, this IS a CRISIS.
Ontario’s health minister told reporters today that it would be inappropriate to call the situation in the province emergency rooms a crisis, and partially blamed vacationing health care staffers for the current problems.

offers Optimum Points as an incentive for pharmacists and students to compete with one another in doing MedsChecks.
This is how the sausage is made in corporate-controlled health care. It's about $$$, not what's best for patients.
So here’s the new reality. Six admits on starting my shift and only a hallway in which to see patients (on a Monday morning!!)
A hallway!
No privacy, no confidentiality, no dignity.

: It is not enough that Steve Clark be reprimanded. He must be fired and the entire festering mess of his Greenbelt gambit must be reviewed.
25% of my clinic patients today were "no shows". No call; just didn't show up. Weather not the issue.
And people wonder why it sometimes takes weeks to see a physician.
Appointments are now valuable commodities, and it is a damned shame that they are squandered in such a way.
Thought I had retired but I guess nobody got the memo. Besides CTV Your Morning (this morning) I have also spoken with CTV Toronto, Toronto 640 and next up CFRA (Ottawa). The consensus at our national emergency medicine meeting is that things are bad and are going to get worse
This is what the inside of an ambulance looks like. In rural Canada, paramedics and their patients are contained in close quarters for extended periods of time. Paramedics, of all people, need to be vaccinated yesterday!
A Christmas advert created by a family-run bar in Northern Ireland has gone viral on social media.
The manager of Charlie's Bar said she is "overwhelmed" by the reaction to the advert, which highlights how lonely people can feel over the festive period 🔗
I used to provide anesthesia services at our local hospital for close to thirty years. We would start early, and many times would not finish the OR list until the evening. Now they shut it down at 4PM! There is unused capacity in our present system.
This aft, I'm proposing we fix Ontario's health care staffing crisis by turning the lights back on in public ORs and filling every available shift.
To shorten wait times and get people the care they need faster.
It’ll cost less and deliver more.
I'll keep you posted.
#onpoli
The invitation was quickly withdrawn in part because they were concerned that two Ontario emergency physicians were basically saying the same things. The unsaid inference was more balance
My God what a nasty country we have become. I'm no fan of our Prime Minister but after two years into a global pandemic, he's not allowed a couple of days of rest in one of the most beautiful places on earth? Sick of this shit.
This is the Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga. Rumor has it (albeit factually) that last Friday they had 104 patients waiting in the ER for admission.
One. hundred. and four.
Crisis? What crisis?
Sylvia Jones needs to go.
Say what you like about Kathleen Wynne ( I wasn't a fan and was happy to see her government go) but there were no ER closures in Ontario during her time as Premier.
Not one - Zero - Zip.
@fordnation
I'm sure Shoppers Drug Mart corporation is delighted; I am equally sure that a lot of individual pharmacists, who work for that corporation, are not.
This is not about access to quality care; this is about corporate profits.
Today I announced at Shoppers Drug Mart in
#Etobicoke
that our government is expanding the list of common ailments pharmacists can treat and prescribe for, to include an additional six.
Local pharmacies are now a one-stop-shop to connect to treatment for 19 common ailments.
The only correct solution on the short term is to increase the number of staffed beds in the hospital and the community and make Home Care something more than the sham program it currently is
I am disgusted and not a shred surprised. We have lost our way. Mr. Meunier stuck on an ER stretcher for 4 days with consequent bone and muscle exposed said "I don't want to be a burden". He was granted death through medical assistance in dying.
Glad to see this on the front page of the Star. Time to call this out for what it is. State sponsored human suffering and far from a mere inconvenience
The Maclean's piece, when it comes out, is not a good news story. It is about the degradation of a once excellent emergency service though decades of administrative neglect and what happened in Perth is truly an honest reflection of what is happening in every ER in the country.
Today my wife was robbed while grocery shopping in Carleton Place. Approached by a woman who said she had dropped some change, the accomplice stole her purse while my wife was searching under the car. According to the Police this is a common scheme. Beware!

It was "all hands-on deck" six months ago when Ontario's emergency health system started collapsing into crisis, chaos and concern; six months ago, when you became Minister of Health.
The worst Ontario Health Minister in decades and I've been here since 1979.
Beginning today, under the Regulated Health Professions Act, we are reducing barriers to help nurses start practicing sooner.
It's all hands on deck as we continue to bring more health care workers into our workforce so Ontarians can continue to receive the care they deserve.
First of all, no longer your friend.
Second of all, while you slurped coffee and donuts with the other premiers my emergency department remained closed for ten consecutive days leaving 25,000 people vulnerable .
Third, I wouldn’t give you a dime without accountability
I had a very constructive meeting yesterday with Canada’s provincial and territorial leaders.
Friends, we need a plan from the federal government for more health care funding.
#COF2022
Not one for hyperbole (I hope) but Ontario is on the brink of serious, serious trouble and this government doesn’t have the people, the insight, vision or wherewithal to fix it. They just don’t.
Family doctors are speaking out.
The time to act is now before they vanish forever.
Everyone in Ontario deserves access to a family doctor.
Like and repost if you agree.

Calls are growing for the Ontario government to recall the legislature and deal with rising emergency room wait times.
"People in this province expect us to be doing better."
PM Trudeau says military style assault weapons, designed to kill as many people as possible have no place in Canada. Truer words were never said. Thank you.
Yet again I can't thank you enough for the many kind comments I have received about this article
@macleans
, which seems to have resonated with so many people. Little known secret, I am actually quite a shy and private person and the attention received has frankly overwhelmed me
Yep. I hear you. I held my daughter in my arms and softly sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as she gently died. I hope she heard it; I hope she felt the love. I cry every time I hear that song.
Saturday morning this photo was taken. And we knew then.
Sunday morning we held you in our arms for hours and told you over and over again how special you are and how much we love you even after your little heart stopped beating.
Unprecedented closures of rural ERs; ambulances stuck on off-ramps and unable to respond to community emergencies and thirty hour waits for a bed in the city emergency departments but hey, sure, let's focus on private clinics and cataracts.
It is caused because hospitals are crowded and the multitude of hospital patients who need to be admitted via the ER are stuck for in the ER for days denying patients in the waiting room and ambulances access to treatment areas
I remember when we would operate into the evening (me being the anesthetist) to get a list done plus the add-ons. Now they routinely shut down at 4PM come hell or high water.
I reject the precept that "there are no ER nurses".
There are, they didn't die, they weren't lifted up and out in an end of times rapture, they were not sucked int a cosmic black hole - they are elsewhere in the system - waiting for a chance/change to get back to their vocation.
Last week I received a faxed Meds Check for a patient of mine who happens to be a physician.
I found that odd since the patient wouldn't need any help, at all, with medications.
Well, personally, I've finally had enough.
A recent escalation of verbal abuse against my office staff has reached an unprecedented level (What is seriously wrong with people?) and I'm not putting up with it any longer.
Zero tolerance is actually going to mean Zero Tolerance.
And here we go again. Now a "lipid panel profile and review" from none other than Shoppers Drug Mart.
Gee, I just did that 2 months ago.
Unnecessary duplication of services; undoubtedly unnecessary skimming off more health care dollars.
When does this end?
