Our student organisers at

in the encampment are the best of us. I am in awe at their integrity, strength, strategic insight and willingness to build bridges and negotiate. See their updates here.
@joannaccherry
This is going to blow your mind but there are both trans men and trans women and self ID is not restricted to a specific gender or sex assigned at birth.
@mushycrouton
We need longer term follow-up on ‘straight marriage’, but also objective measures of life functioning: leaving the house, employment, sex life, relationships… if these indicators do not perform well in a ‘heterosexual marriage’ for both partners, maybe we should ban it.
@lastpositivist
Agree! My takeaway was “Wow the Zionists who made this video are stalwart allies to the LGBTQ community and definitely not murderous raging homophobes who hate us, shame us, mock us, and wish death upon us as soon as we don’t toe the line.”
@KateBMwriting
£600 would also pay for a face tattoo that says “I hate trans people and my own queerness”. If I ever wanted to attend an LGB alliance event, the tattoo would be more efficient - and honest.
@MillieCheesey
Especially appalling in an NHS setting. There will be cis women patients who had a hysterectomy and this may not be a very inclusive narrative for them either.
I await with bated breath the responses from colleagues who often advocate for absolute, undiluted free speech. Now that I think of it, I have not heard much from them today. Some even mysteriously blocked me. Must be the burnout of working in higher education. Join a union! 🙂
@mushycrouton
@AllianceLGB
The most idiotic thing about it is that it implies there is a significant portion of the population who is both radically trans accepting and homophobic. The angry homophobic father who cannot accept a gay son suddenly has no problem with a trans daughter instead. Ok, boomer 🙄

Smeared? The fact that you don’t like an accurate description does not make it less accurate. I thought we should “dare to be honest”, but I guess you meant that only in the context of harassing trans people.
@PriyamvadaGopal
“But they broke a little piece off our pretty doors! I couldn’t ignore that like I ignored the genocide! Did I mention I was so stressed I skipped dinner once?”
@johnarmstrong5
So it’s “let women speak” until you don’t like what the women say, then it’s back to “man tells women’s committee how it should run itself”? It’s almost like this was never about protecting women 🤷♂️
@LGBwiththeT
Next up for the TERFs: real women don’t eat. Stay tuned for the increasingly restrictive list of what makes a woman. Remember folks, being a woman is both an immutable permanent genetic reality and also a title you lose as soon as you don’t adhere to gender stereotypes. 🙃
@Duffeh_Leeds
@mushycrouton
Full blood work, genetic testing and family tree as a bare minimum. Make sure you hand them out to anyone you pass on the street so you’re not tricking people into accidentally changing their sexuality by fancying someone without knowing their sex assigned at birth!
It’s that time of year again! First day of Undergraduate interviews at
@Cambridge_Uni
for Economics. Just a friendly reminder that there is NO penalty for being visibly nervous, anxious, for crying, or for asking us to repeat ourselves several times during the interview. 🙏
@ThomasWillett9
The amount of speculation about what’s in my underwear from TERFs is always amusing. Like, ma’am, whatever I have there, it’s not for you 😅
Proud of our students for standing together in solidarity, disappointed in our government for showing less integrity than the young people it continues to ignore.
In our thousands, in our millions,
We are all Palestinians 🇵🇸
Yesterday, LSE and KCL students walked out of classes in solidarity with Palestine and marched through central London to meet with protesting students from SOAS and UCL.

@SAMcKenna1
@AllianceLGB
Normalising transphobia has very visibly increased the amount of times I get hate crimed in the street for expressions of queerness even as a cis gay, so I guess they have technically helped increase the overall number of social interactions I have in an average week? Thanks?
Organising Against Precarity - 22 November 2023, 5pm - LSE campus
Organising against Precarity is a collaborative event organised by LSE UCU and SOAS UCU anti-casualisation campaigns, bringing together workers, union organizers, students, and activists.
Very disappointing that while LSEAF was able to live-tweet they mysteriously failed to notify the chair in advance that I was attending explicitly on the condition that the event would be recorded and that the recording be made public. This led to the video not being released.
@PriyamvadaGopal
I mean, we know the ‘academic freedom’ staff groups are often nothing more than senior staff lobby groups promoting transphobia, Zionism, racism and misogyny, but I am baffled by the mental gymnastics here. Removing the right to protest = academic freedom? Come on 😂
A pleasure to have been invited to speak at an inclusive teach-in organised in protest of a Gender Critical event hosted at the LSE under the guise of Academic Freedom. Hate speech is neither academic nor about freedom, and trans rights are human rights.
#TransDayOfRemembrance
Imagine if we put HRT access for menopause up for discussion in a public opinion consultation, then decided to ban it based on the advice of a group of respondents where 90% do not experience menopause and 95% have no clinical expertise.
If you’re cheering, you’re no feminist.
@mushycrouton
Fatphobia is essential to transphobes because it is linked to policing bodies to enforce societal standards and prejudice. They are nothing if not consistent.
@freganmitts
This should start conversations: students are being rewarded for menial, repetitive tasks better outsourced to AI (A-levels!) and not engaged in higher executive functions of learning. When rewarded for those higher functions, they would use AI as an assistant, not replacement.
No. No amount of pinkwashing will wash away the blood of 18,000+ Palestinians, 6,000+ of which children. Hundreds of them were likely LGBTQ, but they never got to grow up, find a community, fall in love, marry. They were murdered. If you defend this, do not speak of love or 🏳️🌈.
@ThomasWillett9
These TERFs really think gay 🏳️⚧️ guys aren’t fancied by cis gay guys? Wait until they find out what cis bottom guys often call their downstairs entrance …
Anti trans activists love to claim their motivation is to ‘protect women’ and female spaces. Meanwhile, they don’t seem to mind actual men telling a women’s committee (one of those sacred female spaces) what to do. Go back to heckling Palestine rallies mate.
The ideological capture of UCU means that is now all but impossible for a scientist to be a member. This is a grave concern for anyone who cares about the employment conditions of academics.
Holding protected beliefs does not extend to subjecting students to harassment or transphobia. Those who pay close attention to case law should probably keep this ruling in mind. Your protections under the law are not a license to misgender.
🏳️⚧️ Trans rights are human rights 🏳️⚧️
The coordinated, institutionalised, vituperative attacks on the UK LGBTQ+ community and the characterisation of our trans siblings as threats to children, women, or free speech echo the same narratives Section 28 used against gay people. It is not just harmful, it is unoriginal.
1987, Margaret Thatcher: 'Children who need to be taught traditional moral values, are instead being taught they have an inalienable right to be gay'. Ushered in the misery of s28, blighting a generation. Today 👇 the same polemic, the same callous disregard for LGBTQ+ children.
@mushycrouton
As a Magic the Gathering / D&D nerd I look forward to your inevitable ascension to become an Eldrazi old god type creature 💅 I am here for it
🧵 (1) Some suggestions for alternative names that reflect LSEAF efforts more accurately:
- LSEDD (Defamation Defence)
Why: ample efforts to loosen bullying and harassment policies academics are subject to, while demanding direct consequences for speech *they* deem defamatory
LSEAF does not live up to its stated intent. None of LSEAF's Code of AF addresses the problem of precarity. LSEAF's members are overwhelmingly full time, tenured.
.
- Fewer than 100 people currently on puberty blockers UK wide
- Full public consultation on a highly specialised treatment requirement
- Less than 10% of respondents trans, less than 5% of respondents clinicians
Appalling. Ignorant. Malicious.
@Kareena_Queena
You infiltrated an LGBTQ event to find a sinister conspiracy, and ended up sitting through hours of standard corporate HR PowerPoints. Congratulations.
I could not find the chapter about calling in a SWAT team to brutalise your students. Looking forward to the next book “what we owe billionaire donors” where these perspectives might be explored with a little more honesty.
Die-in at
@LSEnews
in solidarity with Palestine 🇵🇸 solidarity to students and staff protesting in the freezing cold.
None of us are free until all of us are free.
@PeterTatchell
Making this about yourself doesn’t help the cause you claim to champion. Please either take the criticism onboard or ignore it and get on with doing what you do, but stop making this into a controversy about you.
(1/2) My significantly misrepresented point here was actually about how academics have not only served to pursue knowledge and advancement (Galileo) but to justify and institutionalise discrimination, personal bias and oppression into law (eugenics).
@ThomasWillett9
I like how the transphobes are here being like “would you even date a 🏳️⚧️ guy”…what? You think that’s a big ‘gotcha’? You think gay men don’t date trans guys?

Iceland ranks higher than the UK on gender equality, LGBTQ rights, renewable energy to name a few. They don’t need to pander to the ‘woke mob’, they are the ‘woke mob’.
I’d suggest you stay but that would be littering.
@ProfAliceS
I wonder if people smearing the peaceful protest and teach-in even knew what it involved. Had they attended, they would have learned a great deal about the difference between the weaponisation of ‘academic freedom’ as a GC dogwhistle vs actual academic freedom. Nice pamphlets :)

I sincerely hope these are not perceived as the “defamatory” remarks LSEAF members have so clearly expressed an eagerness to punish. These are constructive suggestions to improve transparency, as I sincerely hope the network would not wish to misrepresent itself on purpose.
@akuareindorf
@lucaf_london
That does not sound like a very academically sound way to reach conclusions… my impression as an invited speaker for the teach-in was that there could be many reasons to object to the event, including appealing to ‘academic freedom’ to push a specific ideological agenda, but ok
@CharlotteCGill
“We need journalists to report on the declining provision of public services and the cost of living crisis!”
“Lmao I’m a journalist can I interest you in anti-woke, out of context, tabloidy comments on publicly available info I will condemn without knowing a thing about it?”
@VikramVisana
What is this nonsense? Christmas jumpers are supposed to be embarrassing, not stylish. You’re not a Zara Christmas advert - go look for one with dad jokes and cartoon animals!
@mushycrouton
Transphobes have no issues with wearing glasses. Why are they cosplaying as sighted people? Some even get laser surgery. As someone with perfect vision and no medical experience, I have strong views on how visually impaired people should address their visual impairment!
Gender Reassignment is a protected characteristic and includes a trans person’s identity, not just medical transition. Protected beliefs don’t trump protected characteristics.
In this case, the transphobic teacher turned out to be a raging homophobe too. How uncharacteristic.
Strongly suggest my colleague in Financial Mathematics looks up this concept called “selection bias” and why a 23% response rate + politically charged issue + small initial sample =/= generalisable results.
Yet the article says “the results cannot be taken as representative of how elite British sportswomen feel across the board”
This is antiscientific nonsense. 2/3
@PriyamvadaGopal
White people can only experience racism as the perpetrators. Unfortunately when a group is used to supremacy, equality feels like oppression.
@KirstieMAllsopp
I used to binge watch your real estate shows throughout uni as a guilty pleasure because you brought great British bake-off energy to house hunting. There is something so wonderful in seeing you be an ally 🏳️🌈 🏳️⚧️ at a time when it’s not convenient. Heals the heart. Thank you.
@darrengrimes_
It is pathetic and dishonest to use WWII as a justification for war crimes, when it was the barbarity of WWII that created a consensus resulting in the Geneva Conventions to protect civilians and war prisoners. Even in 1949 they saw the ends do not justify the means. Just stop.
Wanted a holiday break somewhere quiet and cosy but I have seen enough Christmas films to know better. I cannot risk being seduced by a rugged lumberjack and then leave my London job, become a homemaker and help him run his artisanal bakery to support the local orphanage. ❄️🎄
@tillymasonn
Things can, do and will change! But you are right that there is so much change required before we reach an even remotely acceptable standard that the burden on the reformers is excessive and exhausting. It’s only an easy role for those who neglect it, sadly. You did great. ✊

A few powerful Professors cannot be allowed to stake a claim to Academic Freedom, a central tenet of our profession, and declare or imply that those who oppose their efforts or question their motives are against Academic Freedom, or personally defaming them.
Six white aid workers get executed by Israel and this is where some people draw the line.
If this was your wake up call, after you watched tens of thousands of Palestinians massacred, there is a nonzero chance ✨you are a racist✨ so maybe go work on that.
@garylfrancione
If only it went as far as that. The issue is not the held belief, it is all the discriminatory harmful policies it attempts to excuse. If you think GCs stop at ‘live and let live’, then you need to work on your critical thinking skills, and get your eyesight and memory checked.
Maybe as well as scrutinising the sex lives and orgasms of trans people, Dr Cass and indeed the NHS should investigate whether transphobes have experienced an orgasm with another human being in living memory, because I have a strong suspicion on the outcome.
And a massive shoutout to our superstar comrade behind so much of the work on this. The one, the only…
@Marion_Lieutaud
! Casualisation? Not on our watch! What was that? I couldn’t hear you over the TWO YEAR MINIMUM contracts agreed by LSE management after this report went viral
There's a crisis of academic casualisation and precarity at the LSE. Insecure and short-term contracts are rife. We're social scientists, so we decided to research how serious the problem is. Here's a thread with our key findings, 28-page report + code repository.

There are advantages to encouraging and funding the pursuit of knowledge. For example, historians could highlight that your decontextualised demonisation of academic projects is a strategy widely pursued by fascists in the 1900s to provoke populist rage for their cause.
@tillymasonn
We are nothing without the work and determination of our students and I can only apologise that so many of us have shirked our duty to push for meaningful change and dropped it on our students’ & junior colleagues’ shoulders. I hope we can support you more as a union & as faculty
@Shelley61265352
Some of them really think that trans inclusion *reinforces* gender stereotypes because gender expression = gender identity, when it’s actually like, hey, there’s gender expression and gender identity and they can match, or not, and either is valid and good and neither is binding!
(2)
- LSESS (Senior Staff)
Why: in line with existence of an Early Career Research Network and given LSEAF membership is currently 55% Professor, 80% if extended to Assistant and Associate, and only 8% junior academic staff, when 6% of members are current heads of department
@DarkEden21
I’m all for TERFs dating each other, maybe it can help them feel less sexually frustrated and obsess less about trans people’s anatomy… but yeah, this isn’t Heaven 2.0, it sounds like a very sad and angry book club with no books.
