Reader in Financial Mathematics at King's College London. Also interested in academic freedom and a more sane approach to equality, diversity and inclusion.
The image on the right is a proof of Pythagoras’s Theorem from the Zhoubi Suanjing (周髀算經). Thank you
@spectator
for finding such a beautiful way to illustrate my argument that mathematics is not in need of decolonisation.
Why I and more than 50 other mathematicians have signed an open letter objecting to those insisting that “the values of EDI should permeate the mathematics curriculum”
I tell you what, being the only person at a union meeting who thinks women should be able to defend their sex-based right is a pretty unpleasant experience. And yes, this is an unsubtle hint that I feel the need for a like two.
🧵The research I wished to conduct into athletes' views on trans inclusion has been blocked by the King's College London (KCL) ethics committee. The letter rejecting the application stated that by using the word "males" I was misgendering athletes.
My employer thinks it is acceptable to suggest we campaign for Stonewall and put this on our promotion applications. They appear to have done this to win a Stonewall gold award. They have ignored my warning that this has a chilling effect on staff. 1/5
I don’t expect Jo Phoenix will receive 368 letters of apology, but there are 368 people who need to face up to the fact they are now unequivocally on the wrong side of history.
King’s College London is a Stonewall Diversity champion. Their ethics committee did not approve me researching trans inclusion in sport as I had used the ‘insensitive’ word male. A cosy relationship with Stonewall is bad for science.
My research on trans inclusion in sport was blocked by the King's College London ethics committee because I used the word 'male'.
I explain in The Critic why ideological vetting of research is not a very good idea 👇
Sorry, I’m late to all this. Is the reason that it’s wrong to say “only women have a cervix” that sex is a spectrum so we all have a certain amount of cervix?
The “vast infrastucture” of the gender critical movement now includes these transphobic road crossings in LGB Alliance colours that seem to be springing up across the country without any consultation
Interesting that the right to vote was based on sex till 1928, yet according to the Scottish courts as early as 1920 it was gender identity that mattered. The transwomen must have found it very othering to be allowed to vote.
The CEO of Stonewall says that if you are same-sex attracted “then it's worth considering how societal prejudices may have shaped your attractions.” Yet it’s the BBC that’s receiving the flack for reporting this.
The research ethics committee at King’s College London objected to me using the word “male” in my research. The census is a case study in why the Stonewall Glossary has no place in research.
The high jump is an athletics event. Being tall helps in the high jump. Males are taller than females. Testosterone suppression for two years does not reduce height.
We do not need more research. What we need is honest science journalists.
A London Trans Pride spokesman said:
“We do not condone violence, we do not back a call to arms for violence of any kind. We do condone righteous anger and the right to the free speech that was expressed yesterday.”
This condones incitement to violence.
KCL have set up a promotion system that means the only people who will feel safe to express gender-critical views are those who are already promoted or who are principled enough to risk losing out on promotion. This is discrimination. 5/5
When the evidence shows you are wrong, you should accept it. Male advantage is a matter of fact, not of belief.
What your gut tells you may guide your starting position, but it is then time to start using your brain.
"Maybe you believe that trans women racing against those assigned female at birth is unfair or wrong. But I truly believe that a ban is much MORE wrong…I don't have an answer, but I know in my gut that this isn't the right decision."
Tracy Bunnock, EDI manager at Bristol said of pursuing disciplinary action “I wanted each of you to be aware of the risks surrounding this case in terms of the University potentially being asked to withdraw from Bristol Pride and also from Stonewall”
Mathematicians are coming under pressure to "decolonise mathematics". But what could this even mean?
In our new paper, posted today on the maths Arxiv, we review the literature on decolonising mathematics to find out. 🧵
In today’s Spectator I look at how scientists are having their academic freedom stifled by universities’ own equality, diversity and inclusion departments.
The ideological capture of UCU means that is now all but impossible for a scientist to be a member. This is a grave concern for anyone who cares about the employment conditions of academics.
I and a number of colleagues have written an open letter objecting to attempts to politicise mathematics degrees by requiring them to take a 'decolonized' perspective. 🧵
NHS Health England Education are making a dramatically political statement about trans rights. This is bad for female patients who value their privacy and dignity. But in this thread I want to consider the impact upon employees. 🧵
Personally, I am unimpressed with this image tweeted from our Proudly at King’s network. Presumably this is what is meant by an “inclusive atmosphere”.
The KCL spokesperson may be proud of this, but I am not. 3/5
Which is more important sex or gender identity?
In a study published today we used data on non-binary athletes' performance in road races to compare the power of gender-identity theory and gender-critical theory.
The Royal Society is conducting a diversity survey which does not ask the sex of respondents only their gender identity.
In 2019 90% of Royal Society fellows were male. Perhaps this is why they now prefer not to know the sex of their membership.
We urge the Sport Councils Equality Group to reflect on the real-life impacts of this guidance on trans athletes, and to develop more robust research, based on the current realities of trans inclusion, to better guide governing bodies.
Sport is for everyone 🏳️⚧️⚽️
It is important scientifically in a survey that the questions are clear. It is impossible to ask a clear question about trans participation in sport without using words such as "male" and "female". Eliminating these concepts would invalidate the research.
If you experience "distress and anguish" when someone describes the world as they see it, not as you would like it to be, then you need to develop the emotional skills to cope with contrary viewpoints. Universities exist to develop such skills.
If KCL gender research is politically biased by its ethical review process, one might ask whether this also applies to research in other areas?
It is essential for the credibility of KCL research that we do not allow activists to interfere with what we can research.
For activists to prevent research taking place, to control what questions can be asked, or to influence the presentation of research would undermine the integrity of science.
A KCL spokesperson says “they are proud of the work they have done to build an inclusive atmosphere on campus in collaboration with EDI expers and our staff networks”.
This misses the point. What matters is whether staff are happy with the work they have done. 2/5
My university explicitly suggests you might mention your activities in support of Stonewall in your promotion application.
I raised this concern with senior leadership 12 months ago. I can only assume they are unconcerned about appearing explicitly discriminatory. 1/3
I have been sent a voting form for the election of the new UK Athletics President.
@wendyslyrun
and
@RealDeniseLewis
, your election statements do not mention the issues around gender identity and athletics
Can I ask you to explain what your positions are on this important issue?
If our ethics team limits what can be researched about gender identity, this must call into question the validity of any research on gender identity that King's College London (KCL) may conduct. After all there is a bias to our research before it even starts.
Consider how terrifying it must be to need security guards when you go to work. If you think blanket acceptance of trans activists demands means you are “being kind”, then you have not been paying attention.
I have previously had to correct our EDI team on their misunderstanding of the concept of sex. For example, I had to tell them it is not a spectrum from male to female with intersex somewhere in the middle as they taught. (They have corrected these materials)
What is the Royal Society of Chemistry's journal "Digital Discovery" doing publishing a 37 page article which explains how the theory "free speech should not mean freedom from consequences" applies to feminists such as Kathleen Stock?
A QC defending the police’s decision to treat the statement “woman: adult human female” as criminal, transphobic hate speech. Jo Maugham, you are an authoritarian and a total disgrace.
Successful though. The motion to say that academic freedom did not extend to those who ‘exclude trans people’ will not be going to congress. It failed on the procedural grounds that they were trying to rush it through without holding a proper general meeting.
The proposal began: "The principle aim of the project is to find the views of athletes and volunteers on the question of when males should be allowed to compete in the female category in athletics."
This sentence was not even part of the proposed survey.
When a judge compares British policing to the Stasi and the Gestapo, Liberty and Amnesty UK say nothing. When Suzanne Moore defends academic freedom, they write in to complain.
100 people including
@KateAllenAI
Director of Amnesty UK &
@marthaspurrier
Director of Liberty signed a letter rejecting Suzanne Moore's arguments
These are the points in Suzanne's article:
1) Against cancelling & no platforming people eg Selina Todd
2)WPUK is not a hate group
This is why it is important that the choice of survey questions should be determined scientifically and not according to the wishes of activists in EDI. Our EDI team have no particular research expertise, they are part of the human resources function of the university.
The barrister who eavesdropped on Allison Bailey’s phone conversations and reported them to chambers did so because they contained “dogwhistles”. Reading his testimony it seems he is much better at hearing things women don’t say than he is at listening to their views.
BC: making point if u revert to SI then any man can access women's spaces and that's frightening.
DR: the tribunal can read it. I did read it as a dogwhistle that ppl should associate trans with sex offenders. How I saw it
BC: u read as an attempt thatthe group as a whole should
An incredible achievement. Two years ago the media wouldn’t touch this story. None of the pre-existing women’s charities were willing to stick their necks out. Those who spoke were risked their jobs and endured public vilification.
Well done ladies.
The government is scrapping plans to make it easier to change gender and intends to protect women-only facilities, The Sunday Times reports. Plus part 8 of The Funday Times Home Classroom

Living your truth is an incredible and powerful feeling. We're in solidarity with Lia and all athletes who compete in the sports they love and on teams consistent with their gender identity.
A sceptical professor asked me today how could conflating sex and gender-identity affect the Athena Swan data in my mathematics department in practice? Thread… 1/6
The Cass Review is an indictment of academia.
The erosion of academic freedom and the politicisation of journals caused a lack of scrutiny of an unfolding medical scandal.
Academic freedom is not “a right-wing dog whistle”, it is at the heart of science.
There is a well-known idea of "publication bias" in academia - we can be given a distorted view of reality by the fact that null findings are hard to publish.
Policing what research questions can be asked introduces a new "ethical-review bias."
There are other staff networks that staff we are rewarded for working with. The spokesman mentions elevate a network which “specifically addresses the challenges and barriers faced by those who identify as women and as non-binary”. 4/5
It was a response to a question asking me to "provide a summary of your project aims and objectives written in lay language that will be easily understandable."
If they had instead asked me to describe the project euphemistically, I would have been happy to do so.
On the other hand, we did find that within the non-binary category sex was a powerful predictor of race times. Thus the data supports the gender-critical theory that sex matters.
Another example of how membership of Stonewall’s employer schemes has lead universities to lose site of the basic values of fostering an environment of open and respectful debate.
1/ It’s not normal for a company CEO to email all staff tell them there are certain views they should not express. But that’s what Guy Goodwin (
@GuyNatCen
) of
@NatCen
did over sex and the census.
Women are unable to meet on campus to watch a feminist film at Edinburgh University.
Edinburgh University also holds an Athena Swan Silver award recognizing its gender equality efforts.
How does
@AdvanceHE
square these two statements?
Might it not have made more sense to ask women for their views before letting males compete? Sport bodies need to stop making backroom deals and need to start talking to athletes.
King's College London (and other universities) need to disaffiliate from Stonewall entirely.
I also think gender-critical KCL staff are due an apology, and an investigation into how our university has allowed political bias to become embedded throughout the institution. 3/3
The
@EHRC

:
1. Creates further barriers to LGBTI equality
2. Ignores the lived experience of LGBTI people
3. Damages access to rights for trans & NB people
We stand with colleagues in the

sector 🌈💛
These are some examples, but there is a still more basic point. If we don’t collect the data we will never be able to estimate the significance failing to collect the data. Given the rapidly changing trans population, we have to monitor the data to know what is going on. 6/6
The
#ExpelMe
hash tag is not about trans rights, or even about women's rights. It is about everyone's right to freedom of belief, everyone's right to engage in debate and everyone's right to politically organize.
I was told I must seek input from the Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team on the "wording used in the survey" and the "presentation of the research"
I’ve never boxed in my life but if I did I’d be fine with boxing a kangaroo in my weight class. The human’s sports nonsense is just a vehicle for kangophobia and has nothing to do with fairness in sports.
I’ve never boxed in my life but if I did I’d be fine with boxing a trans woman in my weight class. The women’s sports nonsense is just a vehicle for transphobia and has nothing to do with fairness in sports.
Serious question
@serpentinerc
: I finished faster than all non-binary athletes but received no prize. This appears to me to be discrimination on the basis of gender reassignment. What is your argument for why this is lawful?
The Serpentine 10km results are out.
Top 3 non-binaries came 75th, 150th & 335th overall, many minutes behind top 3 men & women but winning same prize vouchers. In total, 4 NB finishers. It’s a nice grift to earn prizes without having to run fast.
The Cass Review shows that the academic community has failed gender-questioning children. I explain how the erosion of academic freedom allowed this medical scandal to happen. 👇
“Is it fair to award $5,000 to the winning non-binary athlete when there are no prizes for runners in Para categories?”
Me on the lack of evidence for gender-identity theory in The Critic 👇
@profalices
@georgeabtsports
12/ When the CEO is silencing staff over the reality of sex and the deputy CEO, Nancy Kelley, then becomes head of Stonewall you have to conclude that they have allowed their integrity to be compromised.
@SelfSpidey
@runthinkwrite
Not according to Scientific American who believe "The inequity between male and female athletes is a result not of inherent biological differences between the sexes but of biases in how they are treated in sports."
This is not an isolated incident. It is fundamental to science that papers are not rejected on ideological grounds. It would be good to name the journals as this should be considered when assessing the research they do print.
“Dancers who accused a leading choreographer of transphobia have claimed she has jeopardised their safety by publicising her resignation.” How selfish of her to not only resign but to then top it all off by talking about it.
When I explained this postmodern view to colleagues, many of them thought I was exaggerating. To them the postmodern view was so absurd they struggled to believe anyone would put it forward. This is what motivated me to systematically review the literature.
Beyond the department, collecting data only on gender identity makes it impossible to distinguish lesbians from males who identify as lesbians. If these groups are of similar size, the voice of females who are lesbians may be drowned out. 5/6
I explain on Free Speech Nation how, by publishing an 37 page article which appears to justify the harrasment of feminists like Kathleen Stock, the
@RoySocChem
has abandoned the basic principles of science.
'I find it astonishing that you can be an academic journalist publishing something like that.'
@johnarmstrong5
discusses The Royal Society of Chemistry publishing a 37-page article entitled 'Academic free speech or right-wing grievance?'.
Cass is another example which demonstrates that if you are willing to apply science to issues of gender you will be targeted.
Those on the receiving end are not trying to provoke, just doing their job.
Why are NHS Health Education England doing something as obviously improper as asking staff to be "trans allies" and so take one side in a particular ebate?
Perhaps it is because they were asked this question when they submitted to the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index.
