Formal announcement forthcoming, but excited my new book is available for pre-order!
I’m hoping it will demystify the science, medicine, & politics of
#trans
kids, while helping people understand what the nuances of gender mean for themselves & society
@RepMTG
@RepMarieNewman
I have a neuroscience degree from Harvard, medical & research degrees from Yale, and I research gender identity.
Science is not even remotely on your side here.
We don’t have time or space for our politicians to be wasting time with hate.

In case you were wondering, none of us were going to hyper-Christian web designers to make our wedding websites
But what happens when all the gay creatives decide they don’t do Christian design anymore?
Christians turned away from architects, designers, stylists, etc.
Today a friend’s five year old son was watching another friend put on makeup.
He asked if she would put the sparkly blue eyeshadow on him.
His mom overhead and firmly said, “do you know the rule about makeup…”
My heart sank.🧵
He looked up, and she said, “makeup needs to come off before bed.”
It was so different from what I would have heard from my parents at that age. He beamed & the friend put on the eyeshadow
It was a small moment in the day,
but so meaningful to see a kid be free to be himself and be loved.
For so long, moments like this have been full of shame and self-esteem consequences.
In so many places, things are moving in the right direction.
My former
@YaleMed
professor, Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, world expert on promoting health equity for marginalized populations, is going to co-chair Biden’s
#COVID19
task force.
I’m starting to think things may actually end up okay.
This quote from a
#trans
kid always stuck with me:
“If I seem anxious or depressed, it’s not because I have a problem with my gender identity. It’s because everyone else does.”
I'm a Harvard-trained psychiatrist who has spent a decade studying
#trans
youth mental health
After 100+
#NYT
contributors expressed concern about the paper's
#trans
youth coverage, the NYT replied it's "proud" of its work
Let's take a look at the work they're proud of 🧵
🚨We have a new paper out today in
@aap_peds
🚨
We examined 2 hypotheses:
1. That youth identify as
#trans
due to "social contagion" & adolescents assigned female are more susceptible
2. That youth identify as trans to flee LGB-related stigma
Neither was supported by data. 🧵
Puberty blockers (temporary, reversible) are more benign than going through a puberty that can’t be undone.
If you can’t see that, then you really need to reflect on your biases and whether you consider
#trans
people *at all* when you form your opinions.
The New York Times just quoted a fringe doctor with no credentials or experience in treating gender dysphoria.
Something is up in that newsroom, and it’s worth investigating.
A reminder that trans sports bills target little kids, not professional athletes.
It’s not about fairness; it’s about harassing trans kids and wanting to force everyone back into the closet.
I am a gay man, a physician, and I research
#transgender
mental health.
I have a neuroscience degree from Harvard and an MD from Yale.
This op ed is not based in fact. It is filled with misleading claims and misinformation with the goal of attacking the
#trans
community.
I am excited to share my op-ed in the
@WSJ
coauthored with the amazing
@FondOfBeetles
. The growing trend to deny the reality of biological sex is harmful to women, the LGB community, and children. It’s time to speak out against this toxic ideology.
My patients are quite happy with their hormone therapy.
They’re quite unhappy with all the negative things being said about them in the media.
Can we work on fixing the latter, please?
Senior psychiatrists think a doctor with pink hair and no tie is “unprofessional.”
They fail to realize that minoritized patients don’t want to share their vulnerabilities with a suited uptight caucasian man who looks like their oppressor.

1. This tweet suggests you think vaccines are the only mRNA technology, which should disqualify you from writing legislation in this arena.
2. The mRNA vaccine ban is also foolish.
Acknowledging sex is complex isn’t “unscientific.” The fact is: sex has several domains:
Chromosomes
External genitalia
Internal sex organs
Sex hormone profile
Neurological sex
Acknowledging complexity isn’t denying biology. It’s recognizing its reality.
Twitter just
@verified
a hate group.
It’s called LGB Alliance (note the missing T) because the group hates
#trans
people and exists to oppose their civil rights.
Twitter needs to fix this immediately. It’s
#pride
month...
If gender identity were purely a result of social environments, trans kids who are constantly pushed to be gender conforming (ie most of them) would not still be trans.
And yet we have over 1 million openly trans people in the US alone.
@yashar
It’s sad to see that she’s basically isolated herself from everyone in her life except the strange echo chamber of people who hate trans people.
Before pushing the absurd notion that trans identities are a “social contagion” from peer pressure, please reflect on the infinite structures in society that push kids to be cisgender
If there’s a clear powerful social force at play here - it’s the one forcing kids in the closet
Hi
@NikkiHaley
I’m a child psychiatrist. Trans kids playing sports is not the reason we’re seeing high rates of suicidality among youth.
In fact, most kids couldn’t care less.
Maybe a gay architect thinks Christian homes are against his deeply held beliefs because he believes they promote unethical homophobia and harm children, so he refuses to design homes for Christian families.
In 1973 (and arguably still in 1987), the DSM categorized homosexuality as a mental illness.
In 2021, gay doctors

and I are chief fellows in child & adolescent psychiatry at UCSF and Stanford respectively.

Trump just smeared Biden’s son for struggling with and overcoming a substance use disorder.
A president who stigmatizes

@AnaKasparian
Who called you that? I’ve only ever heard that used when referring to a population, not an individual person.
Obviously, those terms are meant to be precise to include all people who meet one of those characteristics, when needing to discuss a relevant topic.
It’s not “commonplace” for parents to “transition” their “effeminate” boys.
There are cisgender boys who are gender non-confirming, and that’s fine.
There are also transgender girls. Some are gender-conforming, some aren’t.
Don’t force your experience onto others.
My name is Ty and I’m very grateful that I grew up before it became commonplace for parents to transition their effeminate boys. Many of us could have had our lives ruined by forces beyond our control or understanding.
I’ve been seeing this topic coming up more again and I…
Puberty blockers don’t cause infertility (they’ve been used for decades for precocious puberty with intact fertility), and fertility counseling is part of guidelines for estrogen or testosterone including option of freezing eggs or sperm.
This bill is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
What it would actually mean is that if you disagree with the other parent about sterilizing your child, you lose custody.
Utter madness!
“Gender dysphoria” is in the DSM-5. Being transgender is not. Dysphoria comes from not being affirmed and societal transphobia.
Being
#transgender
isn’t a mental illness. Society’s treatment of transgender people is the illness.
🧵I'll try to dive into this new NYT story on blockers in more detail later, but some initial points:
1. Yes starting puberty can be clarifying re: gender dysphoria. That's a major reason why blockers aren't started until after puberty starts. It's sad the reporters missed that.
Someone please tell me this isn’t real. Flu shots save lives. Vitamin water does not.
Do not take medical advice from Snapple fridge doors. Talk to your doctor.

I constantly hear people say there is no evidence that gender-affirming medical care improves mental health for
#trans
youth. They imply the question hasn't been studied.
In reality, there have been 15 studies.
I review them here for
@PsychToday
.
Hospitals are enforcing gags on physicians. Doctors aren’t allowed to talk about what policies are being implemented. Leaves free license for administrators to do what they want (and treat employees as they please), while we stay silent. The public should be asking questions.
In summary, the NYT's coverage of
#trans
issues has, at the very least, been inaccurate and full of sloppy reporting. That they would say they're "proud"of it can't be read as anything other than bias.
As amusing as I find this line from
@emilybazelon
in her new
@NYTmag
piece, I did offer to answer questions for her via email. She refused to send them.
@AnaKasparian
For example, if you were writing a paper for a medical journal about preventing uterine cancer, you may want to reference the relevant population: people who have a uterus (not including people who have had a hysterectomy, trans women, etc.).
#Psychiatry
fact of the day: I don’t know why
#benadryl
is trending, but FYI it’s given name is diphenhydramine, and it has a 9 hour half life.
You may still be groggy in the morning if you take it for insomnia.
Our country is dying, and the GOP is killing it. They are abusing power to attack minorities, then demand that they stand silent while attacked.
We’ve seen this before in history, and it’s never ended well.
I'm a gay physician-scientist with Harvard and Yale training, and I research

Just a reminder that all people have both estrogen and testosterone, and the phrase “opposite sex hormones” is stupid.
And thank you
@AshleyGWinter
for the regular reminder that the average cis woman has more testosterone in her body than she does estrogen.
As states consider these anti-trans healthcare bills, I want to remind you all that “The American College of Pediatricians” is a small fringe anti-LGBT group. It is not The American Academy of Pediatrics.
I’m running for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania because America needs a Conservative Republican to cure what’s wrong with Washington. I’m a world-class surgeon, fighter, and health care advocate stepping forward to cure our country’s ills. Watch my announcement video now!
In one recent piece,
@mega2e
falsely claimed that researchers from a large NIH-funded study on the benefits of gender-affirming medical care for
#trans
youth never reported their results:
How did the NYT investigate for months, talk to 50 experts, and not know that the researchers from this NIH-funded study presented findings at the WPATH meeting in Toronto.
As a medical student, I remember an amazing feeling of affirmation when I saw the
@YaleMed
“out list” - a list of out LGBTQ doctors.
Shall we start a Twitter out list?

Our latest paper on “detransition”
In summary: 13.1% of currently identified

The following disagree with you (to name a few):
The American Medical Association
The American College of Physicians
The American Academy of Pediatrics
The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
The American Academy of Family Physicians
Can someone explain to me why Republicans think conversion therapy (no studies linking it to better mental health - only data linking it to bad mental health) is good but gender-affirming care (tons of studies linking it to better mental health) is bad?
Fact: Males present a risk of harm to females;
Fact: TIM present the same risk to F as any other group of men;
Fact: Self-ID means that any males can enter female-only spaces;
Males-however they identify-do not belong in female-only spaces.

I now use stats every day and never use calculus.
