For the UK General Election I’m going to try and post some historical parallels for every day of the campaign. I’ll RT this every day with a thread on what’s been happening.
"Gordon Brown is guilty of the most staggering failure of political vision... It simply isn't true that nuclear power is the answer to rising fuel prices, since the earliest that a new nuclear power station could come on stream is around 2017." - Caroline Lucas, 2008
Bone-headed & senseless decision. Govt says
#SizewellC
is vital to meet 2035 electricity decarbonisation target, but *its own impact statement* found we won't get supply for at least another 13-17 years - do the maths! Nuclear is hugely costly & simply can't help meet 2035 target
Really hard to work out why the EU didn’t trust negotiators who now openly admit they were acting in bad faith and hoping for the failure of the solution they proposed.
It feels weird sharing good job news right now, but still delighted to say I’ll be joining
@Politics_Oxford
in July as Bingham Early Career Fellow in Constitutional Studies at
@BalliolOxford
. It’s been a great five years with
@exeterpolitics
but looking forward to new challenges.
Incredibly pleased to say I passed my my viva with minor corrections today. Big thanks to
@ClarkAlistairJ
and Prof. Andrew Massey (
@exeterpolitics
) for examining, and of course once my awesome supervisor Prof. Nicole Bolleyer. Also to
@RMJBaker
for the cake!
@helenlewis
@t0nyyates
Every day I hope the many incredibly talented young women on the Spectator’s political team don’t have to spend any time in the same room as its aging columnists.
@leonardocarella
Also extremely funny that Lula was pretty much the quintessential Latin American third-way leader the first time around too. He has literally only ever won by triangulation.
Gave my first in-person lecture for
@Politics_Oxford
today in a room I spent *a lot* of time in listening to lectures not so long ago (okay, maybe a little while ago 🤪).
Some good personal news today, it looks like I will at last officially be “Dr Nick” very shortly! Thanks again so much to all my
@exeterpolitics
and
@ExeterDoctoral
colleagues and to
@ClarkAlistairJ
and Prof. Andrew Massey for examining.
A sign of where British politics is and how it got there at the end of Johnson’s last
#PMQs
.
Blair: full standing ovation from all.
Cameron: clapped but but opp. sitting.
May: a few members standing to clap.
Johnson: nothing from anywhere but the Tory benches.
In some more personal news, pleased to say I submitted my thesis to
@UniofExeter
today. Huge thanks to everyone who helped me along the way, too many to name here. But especially to my fantastic supervisor Prof. Nicole Bolleyer. Hoping for a swift and painless viva soon!
Delighted to say I’ll be be staying on at
@UniofExeter
this year as Lecturer in British Politics. Really thrilled to be taking on a new role in a department as awesome as
@exeterpolitics
/
@UofESSIS
.
Reminder that Johnson is still under investigation by the Standards Committee. If he's suspended for more than 10 sitting days he can face a recall petition. That would almost certainly succeed, the seat would be vacated, and on current polling he could well lose the by election.
EXCLUSIVE:
I'm told that Boris Johnson is expected to stand in the Tory leadership contest
He's taking soundings but is said to believe it is a matter of national interest
And this is why decades of political science research shows parliamentary systems to be less prone to democratic backsliding than presidential ones - because one person never gets to feel they alone represent the views of millions.
@ChrisMasonBBC
reports PM has been
saying that while he has faced dozens of ministerial resignations, he's been stressing "millions" voted for him and asking whether any of the people likely to replace him would be able to "replicate his electoral success at the next election."
It’s 2024. Academic political science consists solely of arguments between Matt Goodwin and the rest of the profession. A lack of BES data from rapid-fire electoral events has made it impossible to settle arguments. In the grim darkness of the near future, there is only Twitter.
Exactly ten years ago this week I was sitting in my first tutorial, having written my first university essay. A strange feeling to be on the other side of the table this year, especially with the face mask. Not sure my essays were nearly as good as these either!
Some exciting news. This year I will finally be having a go at making a podcast series! It’s connected to a really interesting interdisciplinary law-politics project on constitutions we’ll be doing at
@UniofOxford
. Stay tuned!
Regulating crypto-currency out of existence as a speculative asset which justifies this insane level of waste in energy and infrastructure would be an unambiguous positive.
Artificial Intelligence v. Artificial Idiocy (aka crypto mining) v. Operation Goldfinger. How Assad is earning dollars from the Hajj & Dunkelflaute, the nightmare of renewables.

Great to be elected today as a supernumerary fellow of
@BalliolOxford
. Fun fact: although I was an undergraduate at the wonderful
@CorpusOxfordDev
years ago, my original application was to Balliol. Deeply honored to take up a fellowship named for one of its most famous alumni.
Two principles I think. First even under a blockade there's an obligation to allow the passage of relief that is of a humanitarian and impartial nature and is indispensable to the survival of the civilian population (GCIV Art. 23, API Art. 70, and APII Art. 18.2).
So, if Gaza is a state conducting a war with Israel (I am deliberately not attributing “who is started it”) the question becomes:
What principle of international law would require Israel, or Gaza for that matter, to supply its opponent with essential goods or services?
It’s no substitute for first day

I’ll continue to be involved with

In the early 1930s future Labour leader Clement Attlee was apparently so short on money he couldn't afford to eat the the members dining room, so had to get by on "a House of Commons sausage" instead (from a 1954 debate on MPs pay).
@labour_history
You can also argue it should have been said in the Commons with questions and debate. The use of the Downing Street lectern isn't a mark of seriousness, it's a subversion of Parliamentary scrutiny.
Can argue about the policy or whether it should have been said sooner, but there's no doubt that was the most impressive and passionate speech Rishi Sunak has given as PM
Landed in Innsbruck for

Really great from
@lewis_goodall
. This multiplicity of meaning is why I recommend
@redhistorian
’s (featured here) “The Many Lives of Margaret Thatcher” to students approaching this the first time. The Rorschach test nature of Thatcherism was always there.
Essentially Sunak and Truss are contesting different histories of Thatcherism. What’s striking about that is in 2019 it felt as if the party had shifted to something new in political economy, but now this contest feels as if it’s looking back. My NN piece.
Fun additional point of order fact - before 1998, certain points of order in the House of Commons needed to be made wearing a special kind of top hat. Two were kept in the chamber for the purpose.

Second, Gaza may be a de facto state but that's not the case as it applies to int. law because it's not recognised by any other state. The PA is, but that excludes the Hamas government and thus the relevant law is that of occupation (GCIV Art. 64) which does impose those duties.
Tomorrow (May 23rd) I’m hosting this year’s Bingham Lecture in Constitutional Studies, given this year by Prof. Meg Russell. If you’re not in Oxford you can watch the lecture later via

Despite doing my PhD in issues related to this, it still surprises me the airtime it takes up. As I think
@Dannythefink
once said, for many people the highest principle of politics is less “liberté, égalité, fraternité” and more “someone else is eating biscuits I paid for”.
I am worried about the petition to stop subsidies for MPs meals Does making being an MP even more expensive going to result in more MPs who will vote to feed the kids, or fewer? We know from
@IsabelHardman
great book why we get the wrong politicians cost is one of the reasons 1/
Congratulations to
@SG_Parliaments
for a brilliantly organised conference in beautiful Vienna. And thank you again for the best paper award from

Huge thanks to all the fantastic early career scholars presenting and attending

Ware has now prevailed in three separate actions over "Is Labour Anti-Semitic?" - against the party, JVL and the defendant in this case. Collectively nearly half a million pounds in initial damages from all three cases (based on reporting). Pretty staggering.
⭐️Keynote Announcement⭐️
We are thrilled that

Her scheduled talk will be on the very relevant topic of 'Pandemics, Populists and Skeptical Trust'.

Happy new year all. In the end, the last 12 months (and 10 years) went much better than I expected and certainly better than I deserved. So, thanks so much to everyone who gave me chances even when I messed up the last ones. Anything from here is you all, not me. Here’s to 2020.
I'm presenting my work on debates over pay of MPs in

Can't believe this needs spelling out, but: while the over-riding reason for single-sex toilets for women is our safety, privacy and dignity, the lower average hygiene standards of men as a sex class are just another reason many of us don't want to share public toilets with you.
Cabinet Office refusing an FOI request for more details under S(2) 21, referring to information already published in ‘Matthew 2:11’, and claiming partial exemption under S(2) 40 as the ‘mystery of the trinity’ means all information on Jesus relates to protected third parties.
Transparency outrage as Jesus Christ fails to declare receiving gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh; held secretive summit with kings from the east; lobbied by agricultural industry. Sources close to the infant king claim no hospitality needed to be declared from innkeeper.

I do get the annoyance at this. But isn’t message discipline and protecting often very young people from saying something they’ll regret in the press, on an incredibly polarised issue, basically quite responsible?
This is a great profile of Annalena Baerbock from
@JeremyCliffe
(for those of us who haven't been paying as much attention to this as we should). Lots of lessons for what successful progressive politics across Europe will probably look like in this too.
Happy New Year everyone! Not sure what 2024 will bring (I’m officially on the job market, if you have any tips!) but looking forward to my last months at

Today is the first day of our two-week long, fully virtual

As someone involved in
@UniofOxford
admissions, this kind of “pop quiz” approach is the exact opposite of how Oxford maintains its high admissions standards. Culturally relative prior knowledge is vastly less important than evidence of enthusiasm, potential and critical thinking.
The

On the 22nd of October, I’ll be representing

What's the position on the official seal on the podium and the full branding of a private organisation in the background? Not a huge issue, but notable.
Many thanks to
@SG_Parliaments
, including for the really useful feedback on the paper this summer in Innsbruck. I'd really recommend

@NickSDickinson
is the award winner for the best paper of the Parliaments Section at

General Conference 2022
The section chairs selected his paper since it was theoretically well-founded with strong empirical evidence.
Congratulations, Nick🏆
Couldn’t agree more with this, and it’s one reason why:
🔷
@psa_ecn
conference is free, with no parallel sessions and travel grants available.
🔷 For a £20
@psa_ecn
membership, you can go to
@PolStudiesAssoc
for less than £90, or free with a grant that’s openly advertised.
You know is really shit about
#academia
?...ECRs paying £400 to present a 15-minute paper to less than 20 people in a small room because they think it will help them get their work out there & improve their career prospects.
It’s really will cap off the banter era of British politics if Kier Starmer, of all people, ends up becoming technically the most successful party leader of all time.
By winning 503 seats (77.4%), Labour would win the greatest victory for any single party in the history of the UK.
Only the Whigs in 1761 (long before both the Act of Union with Ireland and the 1832 Reform Act) won a higher share of seats (79.9%).
If you know anything about Oxford's geography, you know that this protest isn't "disrupting" anyone, and you would need to go out of your way to be here if you lived anywhere except one of the nearby colleges.
Locals in Oxford call out supporters of the pro-Palestine university encampment, fed up with terrorist-sympathisers disrupting their city.
People have had enough.
