#OTD 1948. Nye Bevan launches the NHS at Park Hospital in Manchester. Overnight, the patchy provision of medical services - which left millions of people with little or no reliable health care - is ended. Within a few months, 97% of the population have access to a doctor.

In 1999, New Labour launched ‘Coming In From The Cold' - a plan to tackle homelessness. It included money for night squads, hostels and mental health response team. Homelessness was cut by two-thirds and the number of people sleeping rough fell by three-quarters.

In 1938 the Jewish Labour MP Manny Shinwell criticised the Chamberlain Government over the Spanish civil war Tory MP Robert Tatton Bower yelled at him “Go back to Poland!” Shinwell took it as an antisemitic remark and proceeded to cross the floor and punch Bower in the face

Perhaps the happiest person on election night was the Durham tax driver George Elliott In 1983 - after talking politics with a passenger - he was so impressed with him he asked for a price on him to become Prime Minister one day 14 years later the 500/1 shot landed #Election97

In 1966 Bob Charlton – father of Jack and Bobby - was working down the Ashington coal mine during England's semi-final victory When the press found out, the BBC repeated the match for him. David Coleman introduced it specially for 'Mr Charlton who was two miles underground'

In 1938 the Jewish Labour MP Manny Shinwell criticised the Chamberlain Government over the Spanish civil war Tory MP Robert Tatton Bower yelled at him “Go back to Poland!” Shinwell took it as an antisemitic remark and proceeded to cross the floor and punch Bower in the face

History will be made this afternoon when @HackneyAbbott ⁩becomes the first black person to represent their party at PMQs. Abbott made history in 1987 by becoming the first black woman to be elected to Parliament.
