Council tax is a massive indefinite tax cut for London paid for by everyone else. Everyone could instead pay 0.5% on their home. That's the red line. If Labour did that it could abolish stamp duty, raise just as much, & cut taxes for three in four people. So why don't they?

It's regressive by design. You will pay 10x~ as much of it — as a proportion of the value of your home — if you live in poorer areas of Britain than in richer areas (i.e. in London). So you pay 1.1%~ of your home in Burnley. And 0.1%~ in Kensington & Chelsea.

The answer to last night’s MRP poll is not, after *3 years* of Corbyn & Brexit, “We need to strengthen our appeal to Leave voters”. The only answer: “We & the LDems need to stand down in dozens of each other’s seats.” Corbyn & Swinson you’ll both be out otherwise. So will Britain

A month ago, a video went viral on here appearing to show a mother pleading for her son’s safety in a mosque in Wakefield, after a Koran was scuffed at school. Suella Braverman described the video as a "sharia law trial" - but nothing was at it seemed.

An update from the @DavidGauke campaign: “SW Herts is 50 Con - 27 Gauke (central estimates). Top end us versus bottom end Tory is 39-40!” May still be winnable if things break for Gauke.

. @DominicGrieve1 not looking any better in Beaconsfield, per MRP: Con - 54% Grieve - 33% @DavidGauke also far off in SW Herts, despite the viral videos: Con - 53% Gauke - 20% Grieve v slightly down on last MRP poll, Gauke slightly up. Both facing unassailable Tory majorities.

I enjoyed talking to Simon McDonald, the "man who brought down Boris Johnson", about Britain's fading place in the world. He was much more pessimistic – or realistic? – about our relevance than I expected.

The crown in Lebedev's loss-making empire is now the digital @Independent , which is small but growing & profitable. Geordie Grieg has just taken over as its new editor - a move welcomed by many staff. Not everyone I spoke to had a strong grasp of the site, despite its reach. 4/

V good, impassioned speech by @Ed_Miliband , with a hopeful conclusion: "this strategy will not work, the British people are better than this". Cummings would say he has a particular perspective of who British people are…

"As someone who grew up with parents who were born in the shadow of war, we are not at war with Europe, and we are not at war with each other" - former Labour leader Ed Miliband critical of Boris Johnson's language in the Commons

Good reporting here in Sunday @Telegraph (), following up on our @newstatesman story on "Cygnus": the 2016 pandemic exercise that "killed a lot of people" & proved the UK wasn't ready. Nothing was done. The report was not released.

AI can feel abstract. I've tried to bring it alive with the story of @geoffreyhinton , who resigned from Google to warn the world of AI, for this @newstatesman cover For 50 years he has tried to build to a brain. Now he tells me “we're toast”. Is he right?

Couple of mins on @BBCNews , talking about Cummings > Javid. Later they asked me if I "liked" our new de facto Chancellor. 🤔

Cities of London and Westminster, i.e. Kensingon part 2. Tory - 40% Lab - 28% @ChukaUmunna 's Lib Dems - 28% 3% Green vote too, so a 59:40 Remain seat will back Johnson' hard Brexit by 12 points. Where. Is. The. Remain. Alliance.

New paper suggests most Brits may get coronavirus asymptomatically (). She is not the first to suggest it. The first? Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer, on 5 March. "It may be that of those, 70% of the 80% actually get it without any symptoms at all."

Angela Smith, who just joined Lib Dems, could easily be out at the next election. @brexitparty_uk won 48% in her seat in May (EU elections) & it's a 60% Leave seat. Labour won all of 9%… Lib Dems 15%.
