Founded in 1314, friendly and inclusive Exeter College lies at the heart of Oxford, supporting students and fostering academic excellence for over 700 years.
“I am in fact a Hobbit (in all but size)... I am fond of mushrooms (out of a field); have a very simple sense of humour (which even my appreciative critics find tiresome); I go to bed late and get up late (when possible).”
- JRR Tolkien (1911, Classics and English)

This is Walter, who is keeping an eye on things in College while the majority of students and staff are away. We're delighted to welcome him to the team
JRR Tolkien – best known as the author of The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings – arrived at Exeter College in 1911 to study Classics, later transferring to English Language & Literature. It was in Exeter's Library that Tolkien found a copy of Sir Charles Eliot's Finnish Grammar.

Today is the 111th, or ‘eleventy-first,’ anniversary of alumnus J.R.R. Tolkien (1911, Classics and English) matriculating at Exeter College, Oxford!
‘Bilbo was going to be eleventy-one, 111, a rather curious number, and a very respectable age for a hobbit.’
2020 marks 100 years since women were formally admitted to the University of Oxford for the first time. Today we are flying the banner of the Oxford Women’s Suffrage Society to mark the centenary.
