Good progress has been made this month at Dore & Totley as part of the @networkrail Hope Valley Upgrade, with the footbridge to the new platform nearly complete. The centre platform, originally closed in 1985 &then demolished, should open on 25 March (served by Manchester trains)

Barbara Castle deprived us all of this fantastic direct route, which also served the Peak District National Park for c. 17 years until the line was so short-sightedly closed in 1968. This was a comment by one of the sub-national transport bodies. My colleagues tell me that its not a fixed amount, depends on specification. However, the issue of containing costs is something that the @PeaksDalesRail has as a priority.

Dennis Fancett led a 19 year charge to get the Northumberland Line (Newcastle to Ashington) reopened. The article lists reasons that a reinstatement can envigorate the area it serves. How much more so for @PeaksDalesRail , linked to 2 conurbations, not 1.

People point out that journey times for @PeaksDalesRail can't match West Coast Mainline. True, but look at Chiltern. Peaks&Dales would do for London/Derby/Manchester what Chiltern does so well for London/Birmingham. Far better than today's poor East Midlands times to Manchester.

Closed in '68, those speeds are improbable via the curvy alignment of @PeaksDalesRail . But 70 mins for Derby-Manchester is acceptable. Derby is similar to Southampton in size and connects to metro Manchester, 25% of London's pop. Midlands and North will benefit. #levellingup

@HarryBurr_ Fast ????? When Bournemouth electrification opened in β€˜66 the Bournemouth fast did it in 70 mins (1h 10m) with a REP & 8 TC to Southampton and 1h 40m to Bournemouth. We have regressed since then.

Inverness Airport cost Β£15m but with infra changes (new loop, level crossing closure etc) cost Β£42m. Four platforms for Cambridge South with infra changes will be Β£183m. Even single platform Kenilworth was Β£13m.

Smaller stations will still be included for @PeaksDalesRail assessment work, but with the price tag of a full 2 platform station starting at Β£15m, its a high bar. But Very Light Rail with its temp 2 car platform starting at Β£40k is the ultra low cost model (see Buxton VLR)

We were lucky to inherit the experienced Buxton Town Team's work as a basis. Be assured the specification we set ourselves (ie minimal gradient) is at least equivalent to the existing trail. Regret we cant bring to the public domain ahead of studies, acceptable to @transportgovuk

These will be enabled by the creation of a new Trowell Curve linking the line between the EMH and Clay Cross Jn to the Mansfield Jn to Trowell Jn line that loops round the north of Nottingham. This intervention is expected to cost around Β£150m (of the Β£455m Phase 1 budget).

For a mainline reinstatement, such as @PeaksDalesRail there are various options for a "minimum viable product" (or pilot) to demonstrate demand. Northwards to Bakewell has also regularly been suggested.

Thanks Andrew, see logo, we are pro-active travel: rail +trail. Trail would be relocated, not removed. Today >90% of visitors access the National Park by car, bringing unsustainable congestion. Rail+reprovisioned trail is projected to decongest: @40 % less visitor traffic

Late shift . St Pancras is wedged. Route disruption for LNER and West Midlands. My next train will be very busy. ECML trains have longer trains than what we have. So it’s impossible to fit all their passengers into our short trains.

The 1960s technique seemed to be often to chop off whole branches or 10-15 mile sections of line, making it hard to recover them. If closures were ranked by level of opportunity offered today, surely @PeaksDalesRail , by reconnecting NW and EM regions, would be close to the top?
