It’s now pretty clear to everyone that the LNER fares ‘simplification’ was a smokescreen for removing the Off-Peak fare to allow big price increases - I now suspect DfT is behind this. As a trial simplification for passengers it has already failed & should NOT be extended.
@robjbeech
Rob Beech

Anyone still on the fence about the REAL intentions of LNER and their new fare "simplification"? A train on 9/3/24. Ordinarily the £83.80 Super OffPeak would have prohibited more expensive advances being sold, not any more. A 66.5% fare rise. Of course, nobody will read this!

This is a decision of the British train operators, it's on them. It's as if they see the Flygskam grass-roots movement towards rail, and instead of welcoming it, deliberately go out of their way to stop it. UK has been part of InterRail since 1973.

Essential reading to understand Eurostar's situation: Main problem = Brexit, St Pancras can process max 1500 passengers p/hour vs 2200 in 2019 = unable to increase timetable to meet demand = volume/growth strategy suspended, concentrating on high-yield/full trains - no Kent stops

OK, that's the new Paris-Berlin Nightjet sleeper added to Seat61, starts running 3 days per week from 10 Dec, due to become daily from autumn 2024. Not just added for Paris-Berlin & Berlin-Paris of course, but for Paris-Krakow, Paris-Warsaw, Berlin-Barcelona, Madrid-Krakow, etc.

Your periodic reminder that there's a special fare from most British stations to a destination called London International CIV (station code LNE) that you can use when connecting with Eurostar - but it can only be bought in person, not online, see

It seems the evidence was sufficient - Mrs 61 has been granted Settled Status. We are SO relieved, after 3 years of uncertainty & stress. I so hope others in our situation have their uncertainty resolved too, and soon.

AND SO IT STARTS... Dutch Mrs 61 uses the EU Exit app & in spite of having paid NI & doing tax returns living here since 2003, being married to me since 2005 & having had two kids in Stoke Mandeville hospital - no Settled Status....

How have they cut Amsterdam-Berlin to 5h52? Eliminating loco change at the border. Skipping stops at Almelooow & 3 smaller German stations. A new turn back platform at Oldenzaal gets a local train out of the way. Brand new ICE-L trains with bistro due by end of 2024.

So in today’s London to Glasgow race, plane beats train - by TWO MINUTES. A 1-hour flights vs 4h30 train journey, in reality only 2 minutes difference. With plane emitting 7 times more CO2 and much more stressful, I think we know which is the real winner…

They've arrived! @Paultuohy on the plane and Norman Baker on the train got to George Square just TWO MINS apart. Paul *just* beat Norman, but his journey emitted around 7x more carbon emissions. With Norman's journey more pleasant too, the case for #trainNOTplane is clear.
