🧵 Okay, Brent Cross West. It’s a great station, that’s opened on the worst day possible.
It’s chucking it down meaning surfaces are slippery, and there’s a limited service at the moment due to engineering works (every 30 mins I believe which is nothing for Thameslink)
But…
Today I’m pleased to announce that
@Enroute_CIC
are taking action on this ridiculous policy, launching a campaign including an open letter to Merseyrail’s MD and a petition.

All third party tickets purchased need to be printed before travelling on our network, including third party tickets that have a QR code. ^Claire
Hear me out - a brand rail customers interact with nearly every day. It’s already established and would save taxpayer money overall as a result.
Why don’t we call GBR National Rail instead? Ah who knows but I’d prefer it.
Exciting news! For the first time, we will be operating our own passenger train service in the UK. Working in partnership with
@SLCRail
, the open access operation will be known as Wrexham, Shropshire and Midlands Railway (WSMR).

I’ve really enjoyed my last four days on
@SW_Help
. Every train has ran on time/early, all the staff I’ve spoken to have been polite and helpful, and trains are spotless (normally).
Just a shame they’re still stuck with the dreaded Class 455.
Was great to attend the UK Very Light Rail Conference in Dudley today. As well as taking a look at the vehicle, we heard from industry professionals that are embracing this tech.
The architecture is brilliant, and I was not expecting any sort of celebrations for the opening. But the fact there were information posters up and activities for younger people was excellent.
It’s 9am and I’m in Nuneaton, and I have partaken in/witnessed many British things. It’s only 9am.
Me: *wants a sausage roll*
Me: *walks to Greggs*
Greggs: *closed*
Me: *walks to other Greggs within 300ft*
And name a more British, tired, shopping centre than this.
I noticed that there were many younger people enjoying the opening of the new station as well. Which is great, encouraging new talent onto the railway is fantastic. See below…
Speaking as a young person, that’s great.
I didn’t clock this during my brief visit, but
@NjFunky
points out the lack of ticket office or cash paying facilities.
That’s really unfortunate, even in London that’s really important for those unable to use Oyster or contactless payment cards, or even a ticket machine.
What are the chances I can make this Preston connection between the Northern from Ormskirk and Avanti to Wigan as my later Northern connection to Wigan has been cancelled and I have an irregular connection at Wallgate…
Gonna be a sprint
Overall, as I say, excellent architecture and there will be high-frequency services tomorrow, but it’s been an unfortunate choice for opening day! (and on timetable change day as well)
I’m trying to plan a little Brighton Main Line + coast trip for later in April, for a day.
I’ve got a zone highlighted below - is there anywhere particular anyone would suggest hopping off at? I’m probably going to add Arundel to my list but not sure of others.
Really pleased to announce I'm joining
@MottMacDonald
later this summer as a Transport Planning Apprentice. I've been wanting to get out into the world and leave full-time education since I started my GCSEs, and I'm really looking forward to starting this new journey 😊
Was great to visit to the
#RevolutionVLR
site in Ironbridge today. It's some innovative technology that definitely has a case for applications such as freight-only lines and small branch lines.
After five years at secondary school, I've finally completed my last GCSE exam and I attended my prom last night. I now have 74 days of summer, and I'm really looking forward to developing my career and Sustainable Transport Midlands over the holiday!
Was great to be at the
@MidlandsRail
conference today, not only to listen to some really interesting information from across the rail industry, but to also speak a bit about Daventry Parkway Project, my work experience with
@networkrail
and
@SLCRail
, and my interest in rail.
It's a pleasure to be moving into a joint leadership position with
@DavidFrankal
and launching Enroute today, a brand new think-tank and transport research group, which is completely voluntary-run, replacing Sustainable Transport Midlands.

I forgot to post about my adventure today! Was in southern Essex, and my first time travelling with c2c.
I’ve been lucky enough to visit Derby and see their new Class 720s, and gosh do c2c need them soon. Roll on power sockets.
@mike_reader
Euston is the definition of a health and safety hazard and ideally would be knocked down and built from scratch.
NR/TOCs need to bear in mind everyday people (non-rail) are starting to catch onto sites like Realtime Trains, where you can find a platform prior to announcement.
And I’m on my way to the newest station in Britain, although it’ll be a very flying visit as I need to get to Leeds this evening and there seems to be ECML chaos!
Just been on my first Class 730… lovely trains, but a bit worried about whether they have the capacity (primarily seating capacity) to accommodate passengers on the Cross City Line.
Also, I noticed the Northampton loop just doesn’t exist on the maps
@LNRailway
!?
I’ve always said to myself I want to visit every station on my route to work (Northampton - Birmingham). So over the next few months I am indeed doing that!
Starting with Berkswell today… although primarily serving the lovely little village of Balsall Common.
I’m pleased to announce two new appointments to Sustainable Transport Midlands’s Executive Committee.
@GJMarshy
will assume the position of Executive Director for Policy & Research 🚝, while
@DavidFrankal
will assume the position of Executive Director for Project Development 🚊
Every now and again, I go out on the rail network and explore parts of the country I've never been to before. Until now, I've never really tweeted about it - but today I'm off to Worcester, and briefly, Hereford, and I thought I'd tweet as I go 🚄
Only just noted the guy with the red jumper in the background is watching himself watching himself watching himself watching himself watching himself watching himself watching himself watching himself watching himself watching himself watching himself watching himself…
etc.
Hey
@SouthernRailUK
- currently at Lancing and this made me curious. Is that help point there so that ticket gates can stay closed all the time, and anyone who needs support uses that machine?
Sort of replacing the human ticket gate staff? Interesting stuff.
For Dad, I did plan a canal-related detour on our Scottish trip!
Plus - Scottish Canals are moving to an entirely electric van fleet. That's one up on Canal and River Trust to my knowledge!
Hi
@merseyrail
- could you confirm please that it is your policy not to accept any QR code-style tickets from apps like Trainline/TOC apps unless they have been printed prior? And that you won’t treat them as valid if they are shown from a mobile device?
Thanks.
Long story short, missed this and my connecting train at Scarborough was cancelled
I need to stop spending all my money on train tickets and then getting stuck in beautiful places 😁
Hey
@LNRailway
, back to my commute this morning and Long Buckby station tunnel and the LDN-bound shelter is covered in graffiti, making a horrible station even worse.
That tunnel is already a little distressing when walking through at night - can this be added to the list?
@bens2477
Indeed - and that’s coming from the Euston that ‘close platforms 2 minutes before departure’ on Avanti services. Apparently 🤷♂️
Also funny that when I took that photo the train was running 10 mins late and hadn’t even turned up yet so was not
preparing.
Just met the loveliest station assistant at Rugby
@AvantiWestCoast
Started singing along to the chants on the train; saw me giggling and gave me a handshake, wished me a good day! He’s got that Saturday feeling 😝
Not that this isn’t standard for most Avanti staff!
Yes, I became a 7 year old and visited the children’s section of the railway museum 😁
Really good ways they’ve managed to visualise how the railway works nonetheless!
How have I not tweeted about this yet!!!
This evening, dad and I are taking the Caledonian Sleeper to Inverness. Were hoping to be flexible upgraded into a cabin, but the seats shall do!
Great to attend CBT’s London networking event last night (ticking off all the UK major cities this month 😂)
As always brilliant to engage in an
@Enroute_CIC
capacity with colleagues across the industry.
Personally I either use Uber or TrainSplit. Uber I use for basic one-leg journeys (if I’m travelling to London) whereas TrainSplit I use for more advanced multi-stage journeys as they have more filtering options.
Both have good refund mechanisms and no booking fees with good UI.
Controversial opinion: Trainline is actually fine, 95% of the people who complain that they've been "scammed" are just people who have tried to refund tickets instead of claiming Delay Repay.
I can't vote - however, I do pay tax on my income (I know, pretty unfair, right?) So, I think I'm entitled to say that whatever the hell is going on in Downing Street is starting to get a little bit dystopian.
Hiya
@LNRailway
. It seems all week this week the 06:21 departure from Euston to New Street via Northampton has been short-formed to four coaches. Any ideas why and how long it’ll stay like this? It’s packed.
To those on the rail front line (train managers, dispatchers, station assistants etc)… how do you deal with ‘tricky’ passengers? Eg, that sort of passenger shouting at you because a train was cancelled or there’s disruption?
out of curiosity!
I'm in a dilemma - I have plenty of leave this year and I'd like to go and significantly contribute to my mission to visit every station in the country. (I'm at 900ish!)
Where do I go for a week or so? I'm thinking maybe South Wales or the South Coast...
