Last yr was exhausting. Being a surgeon & Chair is hard but doing it as an (only) daughter caring for aging, ill parents seems impossible. We MUST create a more supportive community, inventory/avail resources & provide paid eldercare leave.

Honestly, we never seem to be senior enough to escape stereotypes & we never quite outgrow the disappointment of mistaken identities. Even a small interaction like this adds to burnout over time. 2/2

Yup, that’s right. My 85 and 90 year old parents got vaccinated AND figured out how to take and send photos for the FIRST time from their iPhone. The world is indeed brighter today! PS. I think my dad is flexing his bicep...😳!
So this Chair hit a *temporary* pandemic wall last week. So I deferred on 2 evening invitations, rested and regrouped, and am back at 110%. Lesson: self care is not abdication. It is essential self preservation. Bring it!

Running into more elated faculty who've received vaccine. Observation: The most common side effect is NOT injection site soreness. It's smiling & talking about their shot! And I love it!! It's the best way to say happy holidays.😊
Plea to my colleagues: Let's agree to eliminate the term 'virgin abdomen' from our lexicon in 2021. Let's just say the patient has not had prior abdominal surgery. Gendered language needs to go. Thanks!
