A good friend & wonderful MD at height of career died suddenly on the way to the hospital for a patient emergency. Please let’s all vow to take care of ourselves, and each other. Life is short. 😘😢
Hello 🇺🇸! We’re cancelling surgeries for cancer & ❤️ disease & other important stuff because we need beds for CoVid patients! People we know & love are going to die unnecessarily until we get
#COVID19
under control. Let’s do our part 😷 💉 🧬
For a bit of happiness here, my stepdad started courting my mom after both losing spouses of 50 years in agonizing ways. Now my phone pings at random times with pictures of 2 older folks being happy in places near and far.
My nearly 80 yo mom just dropped some ancient wisdom: “don’t waste any time worrying how bad you look in pictures now, in a couple years, you’ll wish you still looked that good.”
On 9/11/01 I was helping with a complex case that took all day while the events unfolded. People kept running in and out of the room and the surgeon finally said, “We’re all a mess, the world is a mess, right now we have to save this one person.” I think about about that a lot.
Last day of maternity leave. Smiling for pic (that our newly hired nanny took), but I’m dying inside, 💯 sure that I’m already a failure as a mom and a doctor.
I wish I could tell that younger me to easier on myself, so I’m telling you now. Please, give yourself some grace.
“Every surgeon carries within, a small cemetery, where from time to time we go to pray – a place of bitterness and regret, where we all must look for an explanation for our failures.”

. It's hard to express shame, sadness, regret, anger, gratitude, solidarity, and resolution in 64 or 128 characters.
For medical students worrying about making mistakes on their Surgery rotation, let it comfort you that I once ran into an OR and forgot a surgical hat.
Also it was a ortho joint case.
Also it was just last week.
It’s a lifelong journey!
What was your first paid job? (Bonus if you remember your wages. I’m not counting babysitting, paper routes & odd jobs but not going to argue if you do though)
I’ll start: float medical receptionist, $7/hr.
I called 5 people I care about today out of the blue! I reached some, left random messages for others, I'm going to do it every Sunday. No reason, no guilt, no excuses. Life is short! ☎️ a friend.
26 years ago I started as an intern feeling inadequate compared to the others. That feeling has never completely gone away. Channeled correctly, it makes you work harder, smarter & get better. Unchecked, it can lead to negativity & worse.
I'm telling you: You're good enough!
Had my mammogram and colonoscopy done. Both went fine. But Tuesday I’ve got the dentist for the first time in forever 😱
Residents no matter what, go to the dentist! I’m still paying for my neglect (figuratively and literally) all these years later ….
I just took out “MD MPH” from my Twitter name to make room for my pronouns but now I am fixing to add FACS (Fellow

)!

Oh my dear Dr & Mr Coleman, sending all my thoughts, prayers, relief for Mr’s safety & health, and outrage for all the inequities that rob many of their lives ... 🤗
I wish I could tell

me (& every "me" along the way), that you're all worthy; results of an algorithm or envelope or email are not "you." You are so much more. Good luck new Drs, and good careers & lives! There is so much good you will do! 🍾
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but I suggest attending Drs NOT post

pics until reasonably sure most front-facing residents have received invitations, unless for special reason (e.g. encouraging at-risk populations, etc). Intentions are good, anxiety is real. 😷

There is nothing more beautiful than seeing teenagers lose their "cool" and RUN toward the fully vaccinated grandparents they haven't seen in a long, long time!

So sorry! Shouldn’t have to do … but Pro-Tip: have business cards handy. Have them made if you don’t have “clinical” cards. Put one down as you come in the room, “Hello, I’m Dr X. Here is my card. I’m your doctor.” Been doing it since residency. Still doing it. Works.

I tell them up front before they ask. “I need four hands to do the operation.” (More!) They are not all attached to my body, but I am the boss and I’m the surgeon and I get to decide which hands do what. Sometimes the most experienced hands need to be showing rather than sewing.

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.
“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
Good morning !

residency interviews today. Such amazing applicants. Remember

don’t be intimidated ... the Chair who is interviewing you may well be in her socks behind the desk...
Made it home somewhat tardily for a delicious teen-cooked Mother’s Day brunch. Family gifted me this jacket which 16 yo actually chose: “in your usual style, Mom, but not quite as boring.”
What was your first OR case as an attending?
(I remember being thrilled to see my actual name on the OR schedule … in fact, it’s still a thrill today!)

“Kiddo” represents every time some person I don’t know well has draped their arm around me and condescended to me about something or someone I know or care much more about than them.

Any medical student in my OR who is paying attention to the case and then calmly asks, “Is this a good time? I need to …” [go to didactics, eat, go to the bathroom, check on patients] is a superstar in my book.
