Some NFL fans booing the players for standing and locking arms in a moment of silent unity proves that for them “standing for the flag” was always about perpetuating white supremacy.
KCMO city council just removed Jaywalking from our municipal code. Also nixed are bicycle inspection requirements, dirty tires and wheels on bicycles and passenger vehicles. Thanks to my colleagues for this important move toward equity in our traffic code.
Trying to cross the street in a marked crosswalk, a driver swerved away and then back at me. I reflexively put out my hands, hit the mirror in defense. Driver got out, hit me in the face with a lighter, shouted expletives.
We have a toxic driving culture.
That COVID has disproportionately affected communities of color is a well documented fact. Yet, Missouri’s mass vaccination sites for the STL and KCMO regions were over 70 miles from their respective urban centers. This is what systemic racism looks like, folks.
We’ll keep requiring Bird scooters to physically limit their speeds to 15mph but never ask why a 4,000 pound vehicle is able to travel 156 mph on a city street.
Former Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs appears in court this morning following his arrest on suspicion of DUI in a fiery crash yesterday that left a 23-year-old woman dead.
The race for the Kanas US Senate seat will be between two physicians. Yet somehow only one believes in science. I can't vote in KS, but I would vote for
@BarbaraBollier
if I could.
Official KCPD account out here sharing “recall the mayor” propaganda on Nextdoor. Can you imagine if Public Works or the Fire Department did this? Unreal.
It’s more likely that those guns will be used for self harm or be stolen and sold on the street than used to prevent harm. We had at least 800 good guys with guns at our parade yesterday and it didn’t prevent Lisa Lopez-Galvan’s senseless death. We don’t have to live like this.
Grabbed lunch today at a downtown diner. Anti-mask guy walked in, refused to don a mask and sat down in protest while berating the server. The server handled the situation brilliantly and calmly and eventually the irate man left.
Stop doing this crap to service workers.
Kansas City, MO is probably the only city in North America where you can legally run across the street wherever you want to catch a *free* bus. Midwestern sensibilities, folks.
My upbringing wasn’t drastically different than JD Vance’s. Except I didn’t become a venture capitalist then embellish said upbringing in a self-aggrandizing memoir as if I were some sort of modern day Loretta Lynn. I guess I’m just not as talented at the grift.
Thank you to my city council colleagues for the unanimous support of the Fare Free Transit policy. Big step toward removing the fare box from
#kcmo
buses. And thank you to
@QuintonLucasKC
and
@ellington_b
for co-sponsoring with me.
A city’s values are reflected in its budget.
TIL that 65% of jaywalking tickets in KCMO are issued to Black persons. This is why we are now pushing to remove jaywalking altogether here in Transportation and Infrastructure committee.
KCATA is struggling to run buses on time due to staff shortage. They aren’t claiming we defunded buses. PW is short on inspectors they aren’t complaining about being defunded. No rational person would believe that a $262m 21-22 budget is “defunded” but here we are.
Very sad weekend. Multiple homicides and assaults, all while the patrol divisions had buyback positions available because of manpower shortages. This is what defunding the police looks like.
Though rarely seen in Missouri, the Least Weasel is native to the state. But the slender mammal is believed to have taken up permanent residence in Virginia and frequently incites insurrection for its own personal benefit.
I stand with the protesters and call on my colleagues to completely reimagine public safety in our city, prioritizing vital services that actually prevent crime. When all you have is a hammer, every problem you encounter will look like a nail.

So, a tiny bit of advice to local restaurant and bar owners: embrace the fire pit and/or propane heater. Adapt to the outdoor environment we have. Please. Thank you.
BREAKING. The petition effort, trying to trigger a recall election of KC councilman
@EricWBunch
, has failed. City clerk's office says the petitioners needed 2,673 signatures but only got 2,453. Recall efforts are notoriously difficult.
Had to Zoom into the city manager interview today. I thought the front porch was a safe spot to set up. As you can see, others had a different idea.

Lots of talk about how ballparks revitalize downtowns, but I’ve got 35,000 residents, thousands of new apartments on the way, three approved office towers, multiple hotels, a massive riverfront redevelopment in my downtown. A stadium is icing. We *need* social housing.
Good news keeps rolling in for
@kcstreetcar
! $15m Federal BUILD grant to construct the riverfront extension. This is separate from the $50m of CIG funding announced two weeks ago for the Main St. extension.
Big news today!
@kcstreetcar
wins $50.8 million from FTA for extension. This is a little ahead of schedule and puts in great position for the next round of funding next year. Construction will be just around the corner.

“The project would generate up to 300 megawatts of power, enough to serve city power needs plus the energy needs of city residents.”
This is quite an exciting time for KCMO! Great work
@BrianDavidPlatt
"I have a deal-breaking preference to live in a walkable city,” he said, “and I understand Kansas City is not there yet."
We have got to understabd that improving walkability is one of our most important economic development strategies.
Rain garden on Troost working well, holding back the rainwater to prevent it from overflowing our combined stormwater/sewer system. Also great for traffic calming. More of this please.

KCMO City Council just passed the ordinance to allow Accessory Dwelling Units. I was happy to be a sponsor and have small hand in advancing this piece of the housing puzzle.
@QuintonLucasKC
Where are we with public vaccine mandates? Mandating a far less effective form of mitigation when a far better solution is available seems backwards. Pfizer and Moderna are +90% effective.
I find it peculiar that back in February a $10.7m increase to KCPD equaled 10 new officers but now a $10.6m budget cut equals a loss of 212 positions. This is not a good faith negotiation.
Now discussing City Manager request for police department budget reduction of 4.5%, which is proposed for all departments due to economic conditions. That's roughly ~$10.6 million. Department reports that's 212 positions or reductions in different formulas.
Roe v Wade is one of the worst constitutional decisions in American history. It has claimed 61 million innocent lives, and counting. I will only support Supreme Court nominees who have acknowledged on record it was wrongly decided
Today the City Council established the first LGBTQ+ Commission ever in Missouri. I’m proud to have sponsored this historic legislation. The queer community spoke up to ask for more representation and I’m proud to say that City Council listened.
And I’m pretty sure
@QuintonLucasKC
wrote the letter to
@GovParsonMO
asking for gun legislation not to ask the White House to send every federal law enforcement agency to KCMO. This president is unhinged.
A new first for me! Taking
@RideKCTransit
to
@Royals
game! First up was a short ride on
@RideKCBike
to catch the 31 at Main. Then about 20 minutes on the bus.
Make no mistake, the people saying “don’t politicize this” do so because they don’t want you to challenge their political beliefs that allow unfettered access to high capacity assault weapons.
19 kids said goodbye to their family for the last time yesterday because of politics.
So excited for us to test out new products that could make sidewalks easier, less costly to repair, and be gentler on our mature street trees! More pilot projects to come.
Rubber sidewalk going in at 41st & Kenwood as part of a pilot project to test out new materials & repair techniques! Made of 100% recycled materials & installed around tree roots.

I am here to announce this morning that I am officially launching an exploratory committee to determine if I will run a marathon in 2022.
I am also running for re-election for KCMO city council in 2023.

The GOP has capitulated to violent extremists and racists. Hate has no place here. I will not support bringing the RNC to KCMO. I will continue to work with individual Republicans on many issues, but the party is lost.
A constituent just pointed out to me that we have an honorary street dedicated to Sterling Price, who after being elected as Governor of Missouri, served as a senior officer in the Confederate Army.
I'm looking into how we remove these honorary street names.
Same. Unless somehow we get a few million more Missourians and Kansans vaccinated before 6 PM, I will be making the motion to advance do pass on this ordinance.
Not that anyone cares but I strongly believe the science of masks. The belief that the data does not support wearing masks is BS. Tomorrow in The special called TI&O meeting to be held at the Shoal Creek Academy at 6:00 pm I intend to support extending the mask mandate
What an exciting day to witness the final signatures for the extension to
@kcstreetcar
. Thanks to those who worked to secure the $174 mil federal grant. This once in a generation project is the next step in our commitment to improved public transit in KC.
#thingsjustgotrail
Wow. We won! What an amazing journey this race for a seat on KCMO City Council has been. I can't wait to get started in my new role.
There are so many people who helped make this happen--without any one of them we surely would not have come out on top. Thank you.
This evening KC will join
@BidenInaugural
& cities across the country in a National Day of Remembrance. During this COVID-19 Memorial the KC skyline will light up Amber &
@TheWWImuseum
's entrance will display 1,665 flags through Sunday for Kansas Citians lost to the pandemic.
Twelve parking spaces or 50 paying customers? Local businesses owners should have the opportunity to answer that for themselves. And that’s exactly what
@AndreaBough
and I are working to make happen.
You literally get a whole room to yourself to pee in, but you’d rather pee out in the open in the parking lot.
Something tells me this isn’t about privacy.
Yesterday we adopted a resolution to move to fare free transit. Today I announced my sponsorship of a Green New Deal resolution. Love that we are making big moves on equity, transportation, and climate.

Proud to be moving on to the June general election. I have A LOT of people to thank and a lot more doors to knock.
But first I have to go to TIO Committee in the morning!
As a fellow parent of twins, I can assure that however much parental leave
@SecretaryPete
took, it was not enough. Good for him for powering down to be with his family.
Oh yeah, in all the excitement about our zero fare transit resolution (yay!) I forgot to share that my parklet ordinance was advanced out of committee today. Full council will vote on it tomorrow afternoon.

On June 4th
@KCMO
raised the Progress Pride Flag at City Hall in partnership with the LGBTQ+ Commission. This was a first for KC and the State of Missouri.
Yes, and lobby your local electeds to cap the commission they can charge to the restaurants. It was a local restaurant owner that pitched this idea a few weeks ago. The ordinance passed on Thursday.
In pandemic
Postmates sold for $2.6B
GrubHub stock douled
DoorDash founder made $3B
Uber Eats revenue up 125%
They charge restaurants 30% fees
Revenue for small restaurants we serve: down 45%. With delivery fees, they can lose money on transactions
Support restaurants directly
Just spoke with
@MattFlenerKMBC
on why I do not support the effort to recall
@QuintonLucasKC
and while we disagree from time to time, I look forward to working with him for three more years. We have a lot of work left to do and we don’t need silly distractions.
Currently doing some work from a coffee shop and it’s really cool watching people walk from their homes in Beacon Hill to work/school in Hospital Hill. Putting housing next to large employment centers is a good thing!
How did KCMO do this?
• Transit equity was the incoming mayor's priority
• A councilmember who *rides the bus daily* sponsored it
• Free fares are part of a bigger proposal to "prioritize efficiency, safety, and access for public transportation users"
Gonna borrow a line from my friend and colleague
@QuintonLucasKC
: “We need a new downtown baseball stadium like I need a new Maserati. It’d be cool to have, but I don’t have the money.”
Come at me with a deal that doesn't fleece the taxpayers and we'll talk.
Having the Royals move downtown is an exciting prospect. When done well, ballparks can add to already vibrant downtowns. But I've always said that three things are key: 1) Minimal disruption to the street grid, 2) minimal disruption to homes and businesses, 3) private financing.
This week, the Biden administration said it would intervene if a state fails to ensure equitable vaccine allocation. The mayor of Kansas City is now calling on them to do just that. (w/

It’s fun to see some of the little policy wins take physical form. A couple of street cafes that wouldn’t be possible six months ago. One is still under construction at Made in KC Cafe and the other is at KC Taco Co.
I’m sick today! Symptoms indicate a just a bad cold but I’m not taking any chances so I’ve locked myself in my bedroom. But I’m watching Channel 2 so I can keep up with my council colleagues in our special hearing on
#COVID19
.
Nazis tortured and then murdered 12 million people. And this woman thinks that having to put a piece of cloth over her mouth when she uses the curbside pickup at the Dress Barn is a comparable experience.
The only relevance of the urban/rural reference is that urban hospitals are filling up with rural COVID patients. Rural MO where 14 hospitals have shuttered since 2014 because of failure to expand Medicaid. Urban MO where local electeds have actually led the fight against COVID.
Missouri is BOTH urban and rural, and we must come together to protect ourselves and others during this pandemic. I urge you to social distance, wear your mask, and wash your hands.
I made the joke that I went from the 2nd youngest (counting
@QuintonLucasKC
) on the council in my first term to the 7th youngest with in this term. It was suggested I could say 6th oldest but I’m a glass half full kind of guy.
Here’s a picture of Kaitlyn and me from last night.
Homicides are at an all time high and officer brutality is common under Smith’s leadership. Enough is enough, Chief Smith should resign or be fired.
Aside from Mayor Lucas, the BOPC continues to show disregard for this citizens of this city by refusing to enact sweeping change.
Yesterday I introduced a resolution that would establish local control of PD as a legislative priority of the KCMO City Council. Holding a purely symbolic local election is costly and confusing.
By now you have probably heard that some folks are trying to recall me. I’ve struggled to devise the appropriate response. Do I bring unwarranted attention to the frivolous attempt to halt the progress we’ve made? Or do I ignore it knowing they are likely to fail? /1
FAQ
#3
- Will food and beverage places still be open?
Yes, but only for delivery or carryout. Bonus - the mayor also issued a temporary legalization of curbside booze pickup this morning.

Not to throw fuel on this fire but we need workers in every job sector in Kansas City. We have to fill more of those openings to keep the regional economy strong. Surely the Lt Governor knows how vital the KC economy is for the state of Missouri.
One of the other kids got ahold of Kaitlyn’s phone and accidentally took this series of photos of me checking email.
I can get so frustrated by the frequent little interruptions while working from home, but I am gonna try so hard to not forget moments like these.
