Better Buses for KC 🚌
Over 60 bus riders joined us last night to discuss their dreams for KC’s buses at our very first BUS RIDERS TOWN HALL 🎉🎉
It was a powerful evening full of frustrations with the way things are and HOPE for the future we can build when we are united 🫂
BREAKING:
@TomPerez
is in town. Khiana with Sunrise KC asked him about a
#ClimateDebate
this morning.
Khiana: "The rules are a very thin defense against the climate crisis."
"People" are not the virus. Pandemics that target low-wealth and BIPOC communities (that btw have the lowest carbon footprint) are not a climate solution.
This kind of thinking is environmentalism layered over white supremacy. It's called eco-fascism, and it's evil:
Sunrise KC has endorsed
@BernieSanders
for President! Bernie's lifelong commitment to economic, racial, & environmental justice make him the best candidate to carry out the vision of the
#GreenNewDeal
. We will be voting for Bernie in the MO primary TOMORROW. Will you join us?
We stand with disability justice leaders demanding to keep masks in healthcare. Lifting mask mandates in hospitals makes health care even more inaccessible for disabled and immunocompromised people.
Can you call KC-area hospitals and demand that they put our health first? ⬇️
In his response to Khiana, Perez says "the climate crisis is very real."
If the crisis is real,
@TomPerez
, then we need you to act like it.
We need a
#ClimateDebate
now.
Billionaires John Sherman and Clark Hunt want us to fund their 40-year handout while our bus routes are at risk of being cut. Fuck that!
We displayed a powerful message near the site of the proposed downtown stadium.
FUND BETTER BUSES, NOT BILLIONAIRE BALLPARKS!
Khiana: "If you understand the impact that the climate crisis is going to have, it isn't a single issue. It's going to affect every single aspect of our lives."
Khiana: "With 15 candidates [that support a
#ClimateDebate
], it's not just
@JayInslee
; it's not preferential treatment if you hold a climate change debate."
#KansasCity
has so much potential. 3% of the
#KCPD
budget would fund an entirely fare-free public transit system. 0.45% of the KCPD the
@KCTenants
entire agenda to help renters.
Hey there
@evergypower
!
We were wondering, what exactly is "useful" about poisoning the air and fueling the climate crisis by burning coal into the 2040s? Hope this helps!
Thanks,
-Young People in KC Who Really Don't Have Time For This
@FrontKc
Hey there, we plan on retiring all coal power plants in the Evergy fleet at the end of their useful life, which is currently estimated to be between 2040-2050, with the exception of Iatan 2 in Missouri. Hope this helps! Thanks, Dan.
We could have a
#GreenNewDeal
that would create millions of jobs modernizing
@evergypower
's energy grid and ensuring that no one dies due to lack of power in extreme weather situations.
Instead, Evergy actively lobbies against it. People will die today and Evergy is to blame.
Yesterday, Sunrise hubs across Kansas occupied the statehouse on the first day of the legislative session.
Our goal? To get our lawmakers to take action against the climate crisis.
WATCH THIS: "KCPD recieved $273 million in one year... imagine what we could do with $273 million in Kansas City? We could have homes, we could have gardens, we could have health care. We could have everything they currently told us we can't afford."

John Sherman is worth billions. Yet he wants us to foot the bill for his private expenses ❌
Sherman says “we’ve been listening” to the community about paying for his new stadium, but he can’t even be bothered to acknowledge our existence? 🤔
Vote NO tomorrow
Only in KC would we make history with the first women’s professional sports stadium in the world….but it doesn’t even have reliable bus service for thousands of people.
@QuintonLucasKC
isn’t this embarrassing for us?
It's utterly irresponsible for
@repcleaver
to cast the climate crisis as"some environmental problems" and claim that we need anything less than absolute urgency in transitioning away from fossil fuels.
Wearing a mask is an act of community care.
Please consider wearing a mask when in public spaces: grocery stores, libraries, doctor's offices, and on public transportation.
Follow
@mandatemasksus
for more calls to action.
Companies like Amy’s tout the role plant-based and vegetarian meals play in combatting the climate crisis, but their commitment to sustainability must go beyond their ingredients.
Building a sustainable future means good-paying, safe jobs for all workers.
Sunrise Movement KC stands unequivocally in solidarity with Palestinians demanding an end to occupation, apartheid and genocide. We are horrified at the ongoing violence, rooted in the immoral occupation of Palestinian people and their land.
@POTUS
must demand a ceasefire now.
Hey
@evergypower
, gonna demand your money back or do you support coups in exchange for inaction on the climate crisis?
Your PAC has given $5000 to Hawley alone.
Fun fact: Evergy has spent a total of over $40,000 in support of traitors (THREAD)
Welcome to the People's City! Various organizations around KC, like
@blackrainbw_kc
@TheMillerDream1
and more have been occupying KCMO City Hall. We will not leave until our demands are met.
Our public schools are being closed because they don’t have central AC, but city council is proposing giving $5.5 million to support a development tycoon. Make it make sense 😒
Ordinance
#230709
will spend $5.5m on roundabouts near the airport for a privately owned parking lot that will directly compete with the City’s. Who will own the parking lot? Richard Chaves, California-based parking lot magnate & a top donor in the recent city council election 🧵
Live from the People's City: We are demanding
#JusticeforDeja
.
We demand:
1. The firing of KCPD Chief Smith and Officer Newtown
2. A 50% divestment from KCPD
3. Reinvesting that money in housing, healthcare, and services for our Black community
@blackrainbw_kc
Richard Chaves, Jr. is a 27-year-old millionaire buying KCMO City Council seats for his parking & development business interests. Lindsay French, Dan Tarwater, and Darrell Curls–the opponents of our endorsed champions—have accepted thousands from Chaves, a right-wing extremist.

We can’t get to jobs, health care, and education on time via bus. Our buses will be cut bc of a funding shortfall. Why are you fighting harder for a 68 yr old billionaire than bus riders?
Will you fund our buses this week in the budget, or keep defending a billionaire stadium?
There are many things to debate, but can we get past this thing like Lamar Hunt, Ewing Kauffman, and David Glass weren’t also businessmen and I’m sure wonderful people? We built free stadiums for them. Have paid to keep them. Next gen owners are asking the same.
We are sending a Green New Deal Champion to City Hall.
@DuncanforKC
has defeated career politician Dan Tarwater without taking a penny of fossil fuel money.
Now the real fight begins. Victory isn’t won at the ballot box, but when we rise up and secure a livable future.
Huge thank you to everyone who came out to Kansas City’s
#GreenNewDeal
Town Hall last night!
We counted about 255 individuals and this isn’t even including those who joined us on our live stream!
Thank you.
Thank you.
This is just the beginning. 🌅
UPDATE: 🎉🚌 We forced KCATA to pump the breaks and not make a decision on fares in 2025. They will continue “studying” the issue.
When we show up, we make leaders listen to everyday people and not consultants or anti-poor, anti-homeless rhetoric.
🧵...
Poor and working-class bus riders are demanding a robust, reliable, frequent mass transit system 365 days a year.
Instead of listening to them, our leaders are going to spend millions on temporary solutions for tourists and profiteers.
Fund and expand our bus system NOW.
@glezak
@gblanstonku
Disappointed by Gary's take here? We are too.
Follow instructions in the tweet below to tell KCMO you support a strong, justice-centered climate plan! The deadline to submit public comment is TODAY:
I signed the “No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge” in Lawrence at the Climate Change rally sponsored by Sunrise Movement. Our campaign will not take money from oil, gas or coal industry lobbyists, executives or PACS. It’s the right thing to do.

Rafah, with 1.2 million displaced Palestinians sheltering in makeshift tents, is being attacked ruthlessly by Israel.
For months, Joe Biden claimed that Rafah was his red line. Now, where is he?
Stop the genocide
@POTUS
.
“He’s now helping to organize a town-hall meeting next month in Kansas City to educate voters about the promise of a Green New Deal.”
Did we mention there’ll be snacks?
This was I-35 yesterday. Kansas City ranked 5th of cities expected to be most impacted by climate change. Our city must take action now as we see our most vulnerable communities already being disproportionately impacted by floods, heat waves and cold snaps.

@Fridays4future
NEW: KCMO Council unanimously passes transit tax ballot renewal.
Before intervening, this ordinance was weak and did not protect bus funding or our union operators.
Over 275 community members and 3,500+ emails to city council later, and we won a much stronger version 💪
The demands of the People's City are
1. Fire Officer Newton and KCPD Chief Smith.
2. 50% divestment from KCPD.
3. Reinvest funds to housing, healthcare and services for our Black community.
SHAME on
@QuintonLucasKC
and others in the city for forcing the Palestinian American Medical Association to request the special action recognizing PAMA's life-saving work be removed from today's council docket.
.
@SpeakerPelosi
’s belief that policies like the Green New Deal aren’t popular in the Midwest plays off a tired, insulting, and infantilizing trope that Midwestern voters are more conservative by default.
But that assumption is just flat out wrong.
1/ 🚌Sunrise Movement KC demands better buses for KC🚌
Call on KCMO City Council to champion a dignified, frequent and accessible bus system!
Deep and deliberate investment in our buses is a vital tool KC has to fight against the climate crisis.
BREAKING: KC Tenants has blockaded the court entrance. 6 people have chained the doors. The people have closed court for today. Every eviction is an act of violence.
#endevictions
We can either be proactive and address
#ClimateChange
by innovating and incentivizing clean energy technology that would create millions of jobs, or we can be reactive and continue to pay billions of dollars in disaster relief year after year.
The choice is clear.
Climate change and pandemics are not separable. As the climate crisis worsens, pandemics become more likely. Much like the climate crisis, COVID-19 disproportionately affects marginalized people with disabilities, including Black, Latine, and poor/working-class communities.
.
@kcpolice
is literally using a slur to refer to Roma people and offering a training rooted in harmful stereotypes.
@QuintonLucasKC
is this really an effective use of city time and resources?
Roma are criminalized across the US, but no one talks about it. There are anti Roma task forces in police departments across the country, and anti fortune telling laws in many states, including New York.
KC voted YES on Q1, ensuring that 30% of bus funding is secure for the next 10 years!
When we organize, we win. Before we intervened, the language of this ballot measure was vague and weak. The community demanded that the funds from this tax would go directly to our buses.
VOTE NO APRIL 2
John Sherman and Clark Hunt want us to think their stories begin and end with owning local sports teams. That’s not true.
The truth is both of their fortunes would not exist without fossil fuel extraction, burning and the destruction of our environment.
A stadium in a denser area with transit connections would be ideal!
That doesn’t mean we need give into a bad, rushed deal that leaves people with more questions than answers.
We don’t need to accept solutions that are contingent on protecting billionaire profits above all.
@sunrisemvmtkc
@KCTenants
Not sure why the Sunrise movement is against a ballpark downtown that will encourage fewer emissions from vehicles. Curious how this correlates to climate change. Is it just because Sunrise KC is aligned with KC tenants? I’m for dramatic action on climate, I don’t get it…
.
@QuintonLucasKC
There is zero reason for our power grids to be overwhelmed right now. When we talk about a Green New Deal for KC, this is why.
How do you intend to hold
@evergypower
accountable for the deaths they will cause today?
For those who have not already experienced them,
@evergypower
is conducting power interruptions for 30-60 minute installments throughout the system and with impact on the power grid from Missouri and Kansas to points south through Texas.
"Kansas City could be the first Midwest city to declare a

This budget leaves KCMO’s bus system underfunded by $22 million, which leaves bus riders poised to experience deep cuts to bus service beginning in January 2025 according to KCATA officials.
It is your civic duty to call
@HawleyMO
's office at 816-960-4694 and tell him what a seditious treasonist he is for inciting violence, attempting a coup, and thwarting the will of the people!
He must be expelled from Congress immediately.
Attention KCMO Residents! There's an important election coming up on November 7th! Voters will get to decide to keep the ⅜ cent sales tax for Question 1. Here is a thread with more info on that tax and why we are asking you to vote Yes:
“Act with urgency. This is an emergency!” 🚨🚌🌎
Sunrise Movement KC made our voice loud and clear today: no more excuses!
It’s time to fund Better Buses and implement a Green New Deal to ensure good jobs and a livable future for ALL.
28.2% of the
#KCPD
budget would mean the creation of a real KC Housing Trust Fund + we could still do even more for our
#schools
+

, for

+ for our
#climate
. KCPD harms our Black Kansas Citians. Let's take their funding + give back to KC’s Black community.
The tornado and severe storm didn’t stop us from tuning into the
#ChangeTheDebate
mass call! 😆
We hope everyone has stayed safe during and after the storm tonight.
If it’s bad for poor and working-class people, it’s bad for the planet. If it prioritizes billionaires over everyday people, it’s bad for the planet. If it perpetuates anti-Black, racist redlining and displacement, it’s bad for the planet.
Vote NO by 7 pm!
UPDATE: Sunrise Movement KC-endorsed candidates—Michael Kelley, Jenay Manley, and Johnathan Duncan—are moving on to general election on June 20th! When young people organize, we change the game.
Thanks for the shoutout
@QuintonLucasKC
! If by "liberal" you mean fighting for the people you represent, then sure.
We care about you implementing a Green New Deal, defunding the police, and holding bad landlords accountable- none of which you're currently doing!
Masks are proven to keep us safe and prevent the spread of illnesses, not just COVID-19. However, local hospitals in Kansas City have lifted their mask mandates, exposing patients unnecessarily to COVID-19.

There's been lots of excitement around our launch for Better Buses for KC! 🚌🚌⚡️⚡️
But, what is Better Buses for KC?
By 2025, Sunrise Movement KC demands fast, reliable, green, public buses for everyone in Kansas City.
NEW: KCMO City Council caved to the people and passed this year’s KCATA service agreement WITHOUT any language that mentions eligibility requirements for Zero Fare.
The people made it clear that we back zero fare and we forced them to listen!
🚨CALL TO ACTION🚨
Kansas 3rd District residents, listen up!
Here's the deal: Rep. Sharice Davids is thinking about co-sponsoring the Green New Deal for Public Housing Act.
Heat Dome in KC. Hurricanes in Southern California. Fires in Maui. Local and national leaders are failing us by refusing to name the problem. This is the climate crisis. Not a business or development opportunity—it’s an emergency and existential threat.
Dangerously hot conditions are expected to last through Thu. Temps will be in the low 100s through Thu. w/ heat index values near or exceeding 110° each day. The Hottest days will be Sun & Mon when heat index values will range from 110° to 120°.
