Here's a story about a trailer park, a tenant union, and a bully who thought he could dismiss poor people in Kansas City and get away with it. (Spoiler: He didn't.) In 2021 @KCTenants organized Heart Village Mobile Homes when the County evicted the residents to build a jail.

The courts are just one venue for eviction. Landlords use all sorts of means to displace tenants and these are evictions, too: rent hikes, lease non-renewal, sale of property, refusal to accept assistance/vouchers, harassment, threats, utility shut offs, uninhabitable conditions.

Millions of tenants won't be able to pay rent tomorrow. Others will pay, but to do so they'll defer other payments, or choose between food and rent. It doesn't have to be this way. We have always needed a #HomesGuarantee , and now we can see exactly why.

We could still #CancelRent and forgive all accrued debt. As of right now, it's looking more likely that, at best, our communities will get some rental assistance in a few months. It'll be too little, too late for millions of tenants who are in eviction court as I write.

December 1. Rent is due, 9 months into the worst economic crisis of our lives. Tenants can’t pay and shouldn’t have to. While corporate landlords have gotten PPP loans and smaller landlords have negotiated mortgage forbearance, tenants are paying rent on credit cards. Travesty.

This month, the White House and @JoeBiden will very likely allow the (inadequate) federal eviction moratorium to expire. We could have learned from the last year. We could end evictions, forever. Instead, the state will double down on usual business, working for the profiteers.

It’s called! St. Paul just passed the strongest rent control policy in the country. Love to @HENStp and all the fierce tenants who fought like hell for their neighborhoods. Onwards to a national tenants bill of rights.

Tenants in St. Paul are very close to winning rent control. Big big. Midwest tenants don’t mess around. Huge ups to #KeepStPaulHome 💛

After an eviction, most people will never be able to rent a decent place again. They're being sentenced to a lifetime of abusive landlords, extractive fees, mold-filled apartments. Asthma. Harassment. Trauma.

It's impossible for me to tell you how it feels for thousands of people in Kansas City to vote with the tenant union. We've knocked doors and talked to people who don't know there's an election, don't know a candidate's name, but they know the tenant union. The stuff of dreams.

If you can't pay the rent right now: it's not your fault, and you shouldn't have to. We need a federal rent and mortgage suspension. In the absence of federal action, we need states to act. What's the alternative? #RentZero #CancelRent

Rental assistance was not designed for tenants. It was designed to stabilize an industry. Rental assistance (plus mortgage forbearance, PPP loans, etc.) have not only kept landlords afloat, but actually got their balances higher than ever. @sophie_kasakove

WE JUST WON ZERO EVICTION JANUARY. THEY COULDN'T HANDLE US FOR 11 DAYS. Now time to win a real moratorium that ends ALL evictions, everywhere. NO filings, NO summons, NO hearings, NO writs, NO arbitrary end date. EVERY EVICTION IS AN ACT OF VIOLENCE.

This isn't controversial: cancel rental debt. Millions of households are thousands of dollars in debt to their landlords after ten months of the pandemic, job loss, and an economic disaster. People shouldn't be evicted for that debt, and they shouldn't ever have to pay it down.

Law firms, law schools, and top legal organizations can’t change a power dynamic that is stacked against the tenant. How can a lawyer help when you don’t have rights to protect? AG Garland is better served calling on Congress to legislate long-overdue tenant protections.

Grassroots leaders came up with every demand in the #HomesGuarantee , including the 12 million units of social housing and the Community Control and Anti-Displacement fund (see the screengrabs). @IlhanMN listened. That is leadership... and you genuinely love to see it.

It will be easy to feel like we are in this alone, or that we must only worry about ourselves and let everyone else fend for themselves. That would be a very dangerous mistake. We must remember that we are in this together.

It's hard not to feel like a curmudgeon when critiquing the "deal" that was "won" from Congress. On the other hand, I'm accountable to tenants who are actually impacted by this. Here's what they had to say:
