And the more children you have in a household, the more weeks per year *at least one person in the house* will be shedding a respiratory virus. They may not be infectious or symptomatic, but there is virus there to be found.

I love this preprint on non-A-E hepatitis. If it can be replicated in a bigger cohort, it explains a LOT: you seem to need two viruses to be present AND carry a genetic variant associated with auto-immune hepatitis risk

There's a virus that's incredibly common in young people and spreading now in our universities. 50% of cases are asymptomatic. It causes fever and sore throat. It's associated with long-term fatigue in 2-5% of symptomatic cases. It's... Epstein Barr virus.

Fortunate for everyone that lots of laboratory scientists were going in the office & lab to help us understand immunity to SARS-COV-2, virus evolution & vaccine design all the way through the pandemic. I can't do my job under a WFH mandate.

Thinking about similarities between long covid (SARS-CoV-2) and fatigue after glandular fever/IM (EBV) "Six, 12, and 24 months after infectious mononucleosis, 13%, 7%, and 4% of adolescents, respectively, met the criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome."

Angry Scientist - if you don't like someone's research/analysis, write a paper about it, don't send angry/weird emails to the female ECR authors 🙄

@ras_nielsen Sorry to hear this, as it was an interesting paper. Integrity will have its rewards for you in the long term, I am sure.

@alanmcn1 @devisridhar I actually think better weather will help a lot - 'illicit' socialising currently happening indoors will be more likely to move outdoors. People are really willing to embrace outdoor interactions as long as it's not sub zero and pissing it down.

@ChrisJ30900467 @mrhorsdusujet @NHSEngland @nhsuhcw It starts to protect from 12 days after the first vaccination, so Maggie will have increased protection from 20th December, and she will be fully protected (by her second jab) from first week of January :)

Boris, stop telling people they can only catch coronavirus from people they don't know!!! Most transmission is from your nearest and dearest, as everyone at Westminster has first hand experience of in EVERY wave!

@thecatreviewer Windswept ginger chunk (or do I mean HUNK) on the Biomedical Campus. Grudgingly accepted chin rubs, points deducted for playing hard to get. 8/10

2. You might have another nasty respiratory virus - even rhinovirus (common cold) can knock you around if it's a type you haven't had before/for a while. Note the Y axis: flu is really the dominant resp virus right now, even more so than RSV.

The favourite part of my Twitter feed: archaeologists squeezing themselves through & under small household objects to see if they could get through the #RisingStar cave system in search of #HomoNaledi ! @LeeRberger
