Big career announcement!! A few weeks ago I was offered an interview and site visit for a tenure-track Professor of Microbiology position at a dream location. But - I declined! 🌟 Here is why ... (TLDR: enthusiastically saying "No, thank you" to academia) 1/8
@AcademicChatter
Someone I know met a woman who's a Nobel-prize winning biologist and she said "I see you are wearing make-up, that already tells me that you're not focussed and committed enough to make it in science".
Me to my lab bacteria: my babies 🥺 here's a perfect mixture of every nutrient and vitamin you could possibly need
Me to my gut bacteria: dinner is skittles and beer, deal with it
Brazilian frogs which have evolved to be very tiny, have inner ear canals too small to help them balance well: this is why they are clumsy jumpers

A small habit I'm trying to cultivate is sending authors a quick e-mail when I enjoyed reading their paper. It takes 2 minutes and has resulted in 100% positive interactions so far. 10/10 can recommend 🙌
Biology Department e-mails are always a wild ride. "Apologies for the spam, I urgently need some salmon sperm DNA, a hilariously specific antibody, and a few grams of cocaine. Can anyone help out? Cheers"
Never underestimate the power of anti-mentors ... People who are such glaring examples of what you don't want to be like that they actually make for some really good life lessons 🤡
Happy to report that my PCR didn't work because I made a mistake and not because the basic rules of biology have to be rewritten (as I initially suspected)
deleting my dating apps because I want to meet someone the old-fashioned way (bump into another prokaryote, engulf them, turn them into a proto-organelle, and our children shall inherit the Earth)
When scientists happy-tweet their papers like "Have you ever wondered how HjnG-Tx3 complexes trigger UblF dyblobination? 😃" and you're just like nope :/
I miss awkward conference coffee breaks. The shuffling around, the shy small talk, PIs in the corner making last-minute slides, the extroverts scream-greeting each other ... We didn't know how good we had it.
Because 2020 has major "Fuck it" energy, I just reported the senior academic who harassed me after a conference many years ago. It's an excruciatingly difficult process. If you're in a similar situation, my DMs are open.
