50 yrs. ago during the ‘72 Miners’ Strike Freddie Mathews a picket from Hatfield Main Colliery my Grandad’s old pit was killed. Freddie was crushed by a scab lorry at Keadby Wharf. 10,000 people attended his funeral. This plaque was erected by the Hatfield Main Heritage Trust RIP

Last year we celebrated the miners 1972 victory & the part Colchester played in Heath’s defeat. #OtD 19 Feb the UK's miners won their strike smashing the government's 8% pay cap. The strike had caused power cuts closing factories. Let’s win again!

In 1939 Labour expelled Bevan for multiparty campaigning against the Nazis. In ‘44 the PLP suspended him for backing the right to strike. In ‘55 he had the whip withdrawn for opposing the Bomb. There are 2 Labour traditions Wes comes from one Bevan & the Left come from the other!

I’ll never forget the awful moment when Healey won. I was a young volunteer steward near the MPs section & it was as if they’d won the World Cup. Merlyn Rees MP came up to me & gloated that “I looked like I’d just missed a try at Twickenham”. It was much worse than that! 1/2
