There are two explanations for this: 1. Overt corruption: someone has spent £5 and pocketed the £30. 2. Covert corruption: state procurement is so ineffective that the public gets charged £30 for something worth £5.

It's depressing that the opposition doesn't realise that by repeating your opponent's frame (nationalism, family values etc), you don't steal their votes, you just strengthen their narrative. If voters go into the polling booth thinking 'Britain first' and they'll vote Tory.

Let’s be clear: heating your home is not a luxury good. It’s a basic necessity. The government’s choice to hike fuel prices by 54% is equivalent to forcing through a massive, society-wide pay cut - and the effect is larger the poorer you are.

The Labour leadership is hamstrung by its own rigid and incoherent ideology, based on two nonsensical dogmas: 1. If Jeremy Corbyn said it, we can’t say it. 2. We have to ‘balance the books’.

This article is from 2013, 2 years before Labour lost an election by basing their campaign on the assumption that they didn’t need to announce policies to deal with economic crisis because people would be angry enough with the Tories to vote Labour.

After eight years of failed austerity, the Tories are now happy to admit that the economy isn’t working. What they won’t tell you is who it is working for.

"If current policies are maintained in office, we will see basically no changes in macroeconomic policy under a Labour government. This is not Blairism. This is something far, far worse." Me for @tribunemagazine

I used to get so frustrated at the hypocrisy of the UK media. Now, I’m encouraged when I see the usual suspects doing mental gymnastics to justify their incoherent positions - it shows quite how desperate they are to retain control, and how close they know they are to losing it.

I’m buying a lucozade at the gym and the woman at reception says ‘it’s £2 now it’s gone up!’ Me: ‘hasn’t everything at the moment?’ Her: ‘not our wages’

I’m back! It’s been nearly 9 months and 11 countries. 5 islands, 2 mountain ranges, 2 deserts, 1 rainforest. 2 oceans, 10 beach breaks, 3 point breaks, 2 reef breaks. 30 meters below sea level, 4,900 meters above - and a lot of stuff in between. Happy to be home… for now!

Those who want to return to the 1990s refuse to acknowledge that Blair's political settlement was based on the illusory gains of finance-led growth. After a decade of stagnation, politics is once again a question of who gets the gains from growth - and the centre has no answers.

Brother just bought a new car after moving in with his girlfriend and my dad’s response was ‘ah, the 3 M’s - marriage, motor, mortgage - it’s how Thatcher trapped us all’

Our government is giving out billions of pounds to huge international firms so they can pay dividends to shareholders and lay off workers. This kind of corporate welfare is unconscionable when the real welfare system is forcing many into poverty.
