Last year, me and
@L__Macfarlane
took a leap in the dark and left our jobs with a vision of starting a new Scottish think tank. Today, that vision comes to life.
Today we are proud to launch Future Economy Scotland 🚀
We are a non-partisan think tank that aims to create a new economy that is democratic, sustainable and just. Watch our video to find our more about our vision and mission:
“Text me when you get home safe” is something I say to women I know before we part ways, and I’ve never thought about it. When I’m actually saying is that I worry something awful might happen to them and I won’t stop worrying until I know they’re safe. It shouldn’t be this way.
His net worth is $193 billion, he paid no federal income tax between 2007 and 2011, and his workers were forced to sleep in tents near the Amazon warehouse less than an hour’s drive from where he made this speech.
'We must conserve what we still have and restore what we've lost.'
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos announces a $2 billion pledge allocated directly to restoring nature, as part of a $10 billion commitment to tackle climate change.

South Africa was one of the many countries calling for vaccine patent waivers, but states like the U.K. blocked it, leaving poorer countries locked out of obtaining adequate supplies of vaccines, hampering the global rollout, and heightening the chances of new variants.
The Home Office is rotten to its core. Glasgow showed them the door today, but they’ll double down now because they’ve been humiliated and defeated by community power. We all need to find the strength, power and solidarity we saw today. Glasgow showed us how it’s done.
Just some of the measures that should be taken now:
- Freeze rent
- Ban evictions
- Increase sick pay
- Support for carers
- Scrap the two child cap
- Support for single parents
- Provide internet connection for all
You may have heard of Up Helly Aa, Shetland’s viking fire festival. What you might not know is that for decades, people have campaigned to allow women and girls to be participate in the main festival. This year, for the first time, women and girls participated. Just wonderful.
Why nationalise railways when you could simply pay for profit firms to deliver dismal services yet still get bailed out by the taxpayer, while enriching their shareholders and overseeing real term pay cuts for staff?
🙃
A one way ticket on the London-Glasgow sleeper train is £210. Aside from businesses with a lot of money and people on very high incomes, who can afford this? So many are essentially denied access to an enjoyable and sustainable way to travel.
How could you look at a cop being charged with murdering a woman, police being investigated for failing to investigate him properly, an officer joking about her murder, and police violence against mourning women, and conclude that undercover police in nightclubs is the answer?
You know what icing on the cake would look like in Scotland after Trump’s loss? An Unexplained Wealth Order for his Turnberry purchase, compelling him to reveal sources of unexplained wealth after a US inquiry alleged it may have involved money laundering.
A timely reminder that the lifetime cost of replacing the nuclear weapons system is £200 billion and we paid £137 billion to bail out the banks in the last financial crisis and yet we seemingly can’t possibly secure incomes for people during a deadly pandemic.
@YesWithDex
Is it hypothetically you initiating a massive peaceful protest rooted in community power and solidarity, which saw people come together to free two people locked in an immigration enforcement van, and all you legends beating the home office?!
There’s a lot to be said on the food parcels but I keep thinking about the fact that they chopped up half a pepper and put measly amounts of pasta in a little bag. It shows that firms went out of their way to provide as little as possible for hungry children. How dehumanising.
Fuel poverty is children going to bed and waking up cold, vulnerable elderly people getting very ill, homes being bitterly cold and damp, devastating respiratory and heart conditions, and more winter deaths. Knowingly plunging people into fuel poverty is callous and inhumane.
Is the Met investigating these parties or is there an exemption for wine and cheese elite gatherings, unlike, say, a vigil held for a woman kidnapped, raped and murdered by one of their own?
Rather than blaming parents, it might be a good idea to start by asking why children are hungry in the first place. The three primary reasons for foodbank use are low income, benefit delays and benefit changes - all areas that you as a government have the power to address.
Gov has lots of responsibilities: supporting the vulnerable, helping people to help themselves, balancing the books. Not as simple as you to make out Marcus. Extending FSM to sch hols passes responsibility for feeding kids away from parents, to the State. It increases dependency.
Trump already said states must pay more for drugs made by US firms as a pre-condition to a trade deal.
I asked Douglas Ross if he voted for a Trade Bill amendment to protect public healthcare, but I didn’t get an answer.
It turns out he voted against it.
Imagine calling the police over a sarcastic Eurovision tweet. How many of those manufacturing disproportionate outrage contribute to or ignore genuine hate elsewhere? How many abused and intimidated this woman online over the years? Double standards doesn’t begin to describe it.
I’m saw this photo being shared by a few folk without photo credits and thought it was too powerful not to share, but if anyone knows who took it and they want me to credit them, let me know and I’ll do so. :)
I haven’t seen my family for months. I’ve missed birthdays and the funeral of a loved one, and haven’t yet met my new nephew. I would love to see my family at Christmas, but if lifting lockdown results in more people dying and another elongated lockdown, we shouldn’t do it.
Another conversation has emerged about rural Scotland being posh so here’s your regular reminder that rural Scotland is steeped in working class struggles and overlooking this obscures the varied experiences of what it means to be working class in Scotland.

"We absolutely did not want to be in a position where enforcement action was necessary. But we were placed in this position because of the overriding need to protect people’s safety."
Scotland became be the first country ever to make sanitary products freely available. Shame is embedded in so many aspects of poverty. The combined stigma of menstruation and poverty must be awful. Hats off to all involved, from MSPs to grassroots groups. Menstrual justice ftw!
A third of women in Scotland have faced sexual harassment at work. They are watching this too. I’m thinking of them, whether they reported it and were let down, or if they never felt able to report it in the first place. Please know it wasn’t your fault and you didn’t deserve it.
So a party Scotland didn’t vote for commissioned a strategist to David Cameron, who Scotland didn’t vote for, as well as a strategist for Brexit, which Scotland didn’t vote for, and Scottish Tory strategist, who lost consecutive elections, to outline why Scotland has a good deal?
NEW: The Conservatives have started to sketch out plans to avoid a second Scottish independence referendum, with a memo circulating among a select group of people, including Michael Gove
Every so often I think about ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ and its contribution to the situation we’re in today. A costly scheme, particularly for public health, designed to get us spending while hospitality faced uncertainty around the furlough extension. What a terrible policy.
Scotland could bring about an Unexplained Wealth Order - a ‘McMafia’ order - targeting Trump to investigate possible criminal financing in relation to Turnberry golf course. Imagine what we might uncover. Make it happen, Scotland!
MSPs will vote on Trump being issued an Unexplained Wealth Order. This isn’t an accusation. There’s evidence suggesting financial crime. Investigating it is responsible. This is Scotland’s chance to distance itself from Britain’s questionable approach to financial crime.
Sending a deeply unpopular leader to a country that didn’t vote for him, while nobody else is able to travel to Scotland, to tell everyone how grateful they should be for his terrible handling of the pandemic is probably not the best advert for the union.
Incidentally, over the last ten years, the Big Six - which includes Scottish Power - have paid out nearly £23 billion in dividends: six times their tax bill for the period.
“I got smacked as a child and it did me no harm.” If you, an adult, are rallying behind the right to inflict violence on children then yes, it probably did do you harm.
@realDonaldTrump
You’re not welcome in Scotland, just in case your plan was to hide out at your golf courses. Talking of your scottish golf courses, can you confirm if the rumours that they may have been used for money laundering and/or fraud are true..?
Failing to combat a moral panic fuelled by disinformation scapegoating transgender people is a failure to protect the rights of a marginalised community. The tipping point should’ve been a long time ago. It’ll only fester, and the consequences are unimaginable. If not now, when?
I didn’t get to say goodbye to my Grandad or attend his funeral last winter because of Covid restrictions, which were designed to keep people safe. They’re laughing at the sacrifices we made and the rule book they handed out to us but didn’t follow.
I can’t begin to imagine what it must feel like to be transgender in the UK just now. The consistent peddling of misinformation to fuel a moral panic against a tiny and hugely persecuted minority group is beyond awful, and will have real life implications on their safety.
So a woman goes missing while walking home, the police tell *women* to be careful, they arrest a *MET officer* for kidnap + murder, they’re investigated for not investigating him properly, then they say women can’t hold a peaceful socially distanced vigil to reclaim the streets?
Really heartened to see extended voting rights in Scotland in action. Not only are 16 and 17 year olds able to vote, so is anyone with leave to remain, including people with refugee status and those granted asylum, as well as some prisoners. Such an important step forward.
A timely reminder that a few people reacted to a UK Government mini-budget that generated widespread economic chaos by calling on the Scottish Government to replicate the policies.
Although this is a Liberal Democrat hold, to see this scale of swing in Shetland, which has voted liberal for over 70 years, is nothing short of astounding.
So furlough is only reinstated when the south of England needs it, and will, by the sounds of this, end when it no longer needs it. Covid has exposed the limits of devolution, and not just for Scotland.
Scots finance secretary
@KateForbesMSP
: ““Despite discussions today,
@hmtreasury
continue to deny our request that full furlough at 80% be available in Scotland at any point we need it, suggesting that it’s only available for duration of a lockdown in England”...
Those photos of ‘meals’ for children are sickening and it feels as though there are no limits to what the government will outsource to private companies focussed on profit maximisation and extraction, even if it means children go hungry.
Eric also reserved criticism for
@patrickharvie
, who is bringing the debate to the Scottish Parliament. "Patrick Harvie," he said, "is nothing more than a national embarrassment with his pathetic antics that only serve himself and his political agenda."
“Culture of dependency” talk has been key to fuelling hatred of poor people, and justifying further social security cuts. Among the many factors that are important to remember here is that 40% of Universal Credit claimants are already in work.
@jcrdandaly
I recently learned, via
@AdamRamsay
, that most English people don’t use the word “squint” to describe, for example, a picture frame being squint on the wall.
City dealmakers, hedge fund managers and company bosses flying into the UK will be exempt from the 14-day quarantine period under plans to “promote global Britain”.
I hate it here.
Solidarity to all party candidates and campaigners from oppressed and marginalised groups and communities that have been made to feel unwelcome, threatened and hurt by far right bile like this.

We wanted to show that the global South debt crisis cannot be ignored if we are to achieve climate justice.
Honestly feeling a bit emotional seeing rent controls and better protection for tenants being brought in at Holyrood. As anyone who has experienced housing insecurity and horrible housing conditions will tell you, it’s dangerous and frightening.
Responses like this to sexual violence accusations are all too common, and are part of a wider effort - consciously or otherwise - to normalise and legitimise a culture of sexual violence while delegitimising the voices of those speaking out about it.
It’s rumoured that Trump is coming to Scotland. Issuing an Unexplained Wealth Order would be the most perfect ‘welcome’. He has a track record of treating people in Scotland - not least the residents he humiliated in Aberdeenshire - horribly. Here’s a chance to stand up to him.
The outsourced test, track and trace system has lined the pockets of corporate giants who have failed us.
Two weeks ago I called for the cycle of lockdowns to be broken by placing public health in public hands. It was needed then and it’s needed now.
If you’ve wondered what the red line will be for politicians to act, it’s not people starved of food, aid, fuel, internet, water and electricity. It’s not indiscriminate bombing. It’s not 3000 dead children. It’s not a ground invasion. And it’s also not bombing a refugee camp.
“The government has failed to publish any information about £4bn of Covid-related contracts awarded to private companies, in what appears to be a continuing breach of UK law.”
Four. Billion. Pounds.
Black people are being brutalised and murdered by institutionalised racism and all this lot had to do was momentarily kneel to show solidarity. The bar is so low, and they couldn’t even do that. This decision will send a message loud and clear, and shame us on the global stage.
Seeing businesses and charities offering to feed kids is an example humanity at its best. But child hunger in a wealthy nation does not just happen, it’s created. It soared under austerity. It was the government’s decision to cause it and its their responsibility to fix it.
I love many things about deciding to move back to Glasgow but expensive buses that don’t arrive on time - if at all - isn’t one of them. If someone could sort a publicly owned integrated public transport system in the city, I’d really appreciate it.
This hurts. Many of us have to live with the grief that a loved one died alone from heroin - and that their death may well have been prevented with a health-based policy approach, including safe consumption rooms.
Everyone deserves fair wages and decent working conditions. Holding strikes during COP in Glasgow sends a powerful message, and will hammer home how indispensable these workers are. More power to them.
Legal frameworks in the global trading system allow corporations to sue governments in secret courts over climate protections, deepening power imbalances: between rich & poor states & corporations & workers.
We need to end ISDS & the Energy Charter Treaty.

@Douglas4Moray
on furlough extension.
'I have consistently made the case since the weekend that jobs in Moray and across Scotland had to be protected at all costs.
