I found out today that on Chinese social media, there’s a trending hashtag that translates to white people meals lol
“I was so tired I ate a white people meal today”
One of hashtags is also “white people meals are still meals”
Female software engineers—if you’re planning a trip to Tokyo, please reach out. There are VERY few female software engineers in Tokyo and I would love to connect you with the scene to either meet and inspire women here or give a tech talk. Please share.

@AysSomething
Have you heard of the Japanese concept of onara (屁)?
It is used to describe when you let out the wind inside of you, oftentimes leading to inner peace and relief.
I recently learned that Chinese and Japanese soy sauce are totally different.
For the last five years, I thought I was just bad at cooking Chinese food.
Turns out, I was just using the wrong type of soy sauce.
I’m renewing my drivers license right now and it involves sitting through a two hour lecture.
I asked one of the staff if it was ok that I didn’t speak Japanese and they seemed to not care at all if I understood or not.
🤷🏻♀️ ok
International Women’s Day. Ugh.
Instead of having panels of the same groups of women from privileged backgrounds, we should be interviewing the underpaid daycare workers, nurses, and teachers and figuring out how to pay them their fair share.
Feminism isn’t just
#girlboss
.
Can you imagine buying decent Red Sox tickets for under $30 with $5 beers brought to your seat and a plethora of food options for under $8? And then they throw in fireworks?
And you don’t have to worry about violence? And the toilets aren’t gross!
When I first met a Japanese neighbor on my floor, she told me she had studied Mandarin in university. So when she said something to me in Mandarin, I replied “上手🤗” even though it was unintelligible.
But now she mostly speaks to me in unintelligible Chinese 😅 I am trapped!
Went to the hospital for a procedure that took less than 7 minutes. And out of an abundance of caution, they made me stay under observation for three hours and gave me food.
Got a message on LinkedIn today from the CTO of another company who interviewed a recent bootcamp grad 🥺🥺
Messages like these mean the world to me and I'm beyond happy to see our alums kicking ass out in the world.
@codechrysalis
Today is the 5th anniversary 🎂 of
@codechrysalis
. No journey is without its challenges, but the last five years have been incredibly meaningful.
For the past 7 months, I have been leading a complete reorganization of CC. I do not think I have ever learned this much in my life.
Omg Twitter eng family, I’m feeling so inspired by your response—bear 🐻 with me while I reply to everyone.
While I have your attention, my colleague and I put together a list of female tech events and orgs in Tokyo 👩🏻💻: Check it out!
Belated life update but I got married a few months ago in Chile’s Colchagua Valley.
Very thankful for all of our friends who traveled to the edge of the world to celebrate with us.
I think one of the difficulties of growing (not even scaling) a company in Japan is the lack of growth experience in the job market.
You have people who have only always worked in big, mid-sized, or small companies. Sometimes you get a gem who has worked in 2+ sizes.
For the first time ever, I’m going on vacation without my laptop in tow, with Slack deleted from my phone, and a vacation email responder on.
😱😱😱
A huge entrepreneurship milestone! 🏔
Went to an event where it was brought up how there were more than 2 women attendees this time and yay.
Then one of the woman said to the room of mostly men “I am a woman but inside, I am a man teehee”
To give you an idea of how bad things are in Japan re gender equity.
All I’m asking for is a city with all the safety, healthcare, toilets, and public transit of Tokyo, the career opportunities, capital markets, and ambition of NYC, the non-CCP energy of Shanghai, and the tax laws of Singapore with the weather of LA.
Is that too much to ask for?
We celebrated
@codechrysalis
’s five year anniversary last night. These two have been with
@munidk
and me from even before the start.
A spouse can make it or break it for entrepreneurs. We’re very lucky to have supportive and understanding partners that allow us to do this.
This man knows logic.
The baloney I find on LinkedIn.
You’re living in a country full of economic opportunity, females. You can do everything from serve tea to bowing while serving tea.
6 years 😵 one of the few photos with majority of the team together minus several faces.
Was excruciatingly difficult to get to this point. Don’t start companies unless you like pain.
Ambulances drive so slowly in Japan. I was following behind one today and wanted to over pass it because it was driving at the speed limit (who does that??).
Unless you're in some state that requires EMT support, you're better off jumping in a cab and saying you're late.
I think I accidentally gave Japanese funeral flowers to a Japanese friend a few weeks ago NOT for a funeral. I didn't realize it until just now. AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!
#japanlife
Decided to treat myself on this Friday night so I went to the grocery store and bought some fruit. Which in Japan means I spent ~$40usd on two mangoes and some strawberries.
#japanlife
I wrote a thing on LinkedIn. At first it didn't post properly and I fixed it after realizing ::shakes first angrily::
Here's my response to an article/op-ed that was written in the BBC about a stagnating Japan:
TLDR: I disagree.
Our technical staff has equal male-female ratios + a small percentage identifying as neither.
I always hear that this is impossible to achieve in Japan, so
@codechrysalis
proves it is POSSIBLE.
We're hiring btw! Please ping me if you're interested. We have a lot of open jobs.
Working out is very gendered. I’m usually the only woman in the weights area in Japan.
What ends up happening is that women don’t lift enough heavy things and suffer from weaker bones. And men don’t ever develop enough flexibility and mobility.
We celebrated our 2 year anniversary last night. It was incredible seeing so many friendly faces that have helped us over the years.
Most importantly, the two people behind
@munidk
and me. Without their support and sacrifice,
@codechrysalis
would not have happened. Thank you. 😘
Oh wow Twitter 🤗 I go teach a programming workshop, come back, and my little tweet has gone mini-viral. Thank you to everyone! And for those who have reached out, I’m replying as fast as my thumbs can go.
Living in Japan, we don’t really feel the effects of inflation.
Currently planning a trip to Boston and these prices are bonkers.
A private room in a YOUTH HOSTEL (with a shared bathroom) in Boston is currently $250/night, wo tax 🤯
The Hilton is $450, Mandarin O is $1000+ 😱
I ate half a little cup of natto for breakfast today and didn’t mind it! 🥳🥳
I’ve been trying to like natto ever since I moved here since it’s readily available and nutritious.
So indifference towards it is an improvement from gagging!! 🥇
This sexist, lazy and mean spirited article is deeply embarrassing for the New York Times, and sends yet another message to women founders who already feel like they’re building with a target on their backs.

who I found out is my Tokyo nickname buddy.
My husband is doing nearly all the wedding planning for our delayed nuptials and it is AMAZING.
All I did was create a PowerPoint about the things I expect and now I hear him on Zoom calls with our wedding planner talking about naked cakes, florals, and alpacas in Spanish 🤣🤣
My partner tested positive for COVID on my birthday a few days ago and now I've tested positive, too.
He's always been great with gift-giving.
Just a mild sore throat for now.
I guess I'll see how my immune system stands up to this. 🎢 Great start to 33!
Just took a practice kanji exam for Japanese. My fleeting Chinese knowledge automatically puts me in N2 for kanji level. Yay!! 🇨🇳🇨🇳🇨🇳 Now I just need to learn the rest of the language and you know, how to speak it...boooooo. ㊗️㊗️
Very sad to have received this news today. Idei-san was an early believer of
@codechrysalis
, championing us when we had just started the company. He lent us his credibility and pushed opened doors as our advisor.
Thank you for your time.
Rest In Peace.
Looking to hire a community & operations manager in Tokyo for
@codechrysalis
. Needs to speak English. Japanese skills a big plus. Who do you recommend I talk to, Twitter fam?
Have you heard of the Japanese concept of onara (屁)?
It is used to describe when you let out the wind inside of you, oftentimes leading to inner peace and relief.
Had a dream last night that I was running a lesser known
@elonmusk
company selling melon popsicles called Melon Musk and trying to convince people that I didn’t sleep with him to get the job.
Suffice to say, I did not get good sleep last night.
There are 3 women in my neighborhood who don’t pick up their dog poop. I’ve seen them watch their dogs poop and walk away numerous times.
The next time, I’m going to pick up and give them the poop.
Twitter fam: what should I say to them in 日本語 when I hand them the poop?
People really are still using a • rather than auto-formatted bullets everywhere. Same can be said for manually numbering shit.
I can't tell you the number of times I've had to remove a • and the manual indenting.
It's painful. WHY DO YOU DO THIS???
#$%^!!
The Red Hot Chili Peppers concert was 💯perfect.
Audio: superb
Flow: silky smooth
Visuals: stunning
Played almost all of their greatest hits. Never felt like they were phoning it in--high energy. Just the perfect length (2 hrs).
Totally worth the 20+ years I've waited 🥺
I won a rockstar costume contest over the weekend by dressing up as Freddie Mercury.
But the prize was a bottle of whiskey and I don’t really drink.
The husband was happy though 🤘🏼
Twinned with
@zatlyn
yesterday 👯♀️
Thank you
@Cloudflare
for organizing the Women in Tech Japan event!
It was a night of inspiration, laughter, and learning from so many women. We talked about everything from career ambitions to personal finances and children. 🫶
Golden Week traffic is horrendous. Sat in traffic for 1.5 hours trying to get to Chiba. Didn’t even make it near the Aqua Line.
Ended up going to Yokohama instead, where it was also impossible but at least we weren’t stuck in a car.
And this is without tourists. Bonkers!
Great snapshot of what's happening in Japan rn.
The
@CodeChrysalis
vision is to make Japan a software leader. From our view, Japan provides goods and services for the world, which means that improving software capabilities here have global impact.
No opening ceremony tickets (hit me up if you've got connections!), but I did get 4 gymnastics women's team finals tickets!!!! 🤸🏻♀️🤸🏻♀️🤸♀️🤸🏽♀️ Woohoo!!! That's a great competition to watch when you're Chinese American. 🇺🇸🇨🇳
As a kid, I remember getting scolded by my teachers for not saying "thank you" when someone complimented me. Took years to get used to that as an Asian American kid.
Of course, now I'm in Japan and saying "thank you" to a compliment comes off as arrogant.
You can never win🤷🏻♀️
Today was a big day for me. I read, understood and replied to a Japanese social media post in Japanese. 🔥✨🥰🎉🎂
Tomorrow I have my second serious Japanese class. My goal is to be able to give a talk in 3 months. Stay tuned.
“Quoting a dead Greek guy will make me sound smart right?”
My actual motto right now is “See how many jobs I can fire myself from” but I thought that’d sound weird without context.
Wow! I am blown away by the turn-out for our very first
#BigMiniConf
. There's been over 30 people in the audience at any given time. It may not seem like a lot, but that's pretty huge for us and for many tech events in Tokyo. Going into this, I was giving myself a goal of 15-20.
June is starting off as a great month. I'm making 660,000 yen before taxes from coding, which is an amount I never thought I'd see when I was teaching English. I'm not sharing this to brag. 🙇🏾♀️ I just hope it motivates others who are still in the transition to not give up. 👩🏾🏫➡️👩🏾💻
Met a guy I used to play competitive Tetris with today. This is the first time we’ve met in person after over 10 years of knowing each other online. He’s a doctor now and married to the lovely lady on the right. Yay us!
