Bad side effect of North American zoning is that it forces neighborhoods into a weird stasis where they are mostly uninteresting to young people. There's no transit here, it's hard to build a neighborhood cafe or music venue or anything else, no surprise they feel like dead zones

Impressive, very nice. Now let's look up why suburbs were created

Anti-car urbanism is, at its core, a discriminatory practice by wealthy urban elites who seek to reduce the number of suburban people w/whom they interact. People who commute downtown because they canโ€™t afford to live there do so overwhelmingly in cars due to their efficiency.

No I agree, they should be atomized and stuck in car dependent suburbs where they can't even get food on their own because they've aged out of driving and there's little human interaction because everyone is in a car as soon as they step outside their door

I am not an extremist "fuck cars" guy but I understand why that movement exists: North American, particularly US culture is so biased towards cars that there is a lot of pent up frustration and anger towards a society that doesn't support surviving without a personal car.

If you're wondering why people in the outer boros are starting to flip out over Eric Adams' City of Yes, here's a a good illustration. The proposal is to virtually eliminate all zoning throughout the city, allowing for monstrosities such as this in 1-2 family neighborhoods:

Aside from ensuring Project Connect doesn't get pwned by the State, what would help Austin get competitive in the short/medium-term? Better non-car mobility + connection to the surrounding areas outside downtown. South Austin is a mess and striking contrast to downtown.

@WaynesWhirled @MrScottHendrix I love how you missed the point the original point, which is that SFH-zoning forces many neighborhoods -- even those within and close to city centers -- to look like sprawling single family suburbs.

There are many remarkable things about the Texas economy but I do not really think the only way to sustain it is to expand I-35. However, that is the way that requires the absolute least imagination.

Texas has one of the worldโ€™s largest economies, and much of that success can be attributed to one road. #TxDOTNewsroom

I bet if you just blindly passed a law in Texas that said every 4+ lane non-highway road in every major city in the state had to be reduced by one lane (to be used for walking, biking, or transit) it would be a net positive

@WillFlyforFood The idea that a neighborhood contains no commercial activity is a very new idea that applies to a specific kind of American suburban neighborhood, certainly not a universal rule

The Austin Urbanistas are promoting policies that will make it harder and harder for them to buy, instead of rent. I am flummoxed by the strange politics at work here, with supposed "progressives" promoting Oligarch control of housing and some Republicans (!!yikes!!) promotingโ€ฆ

It's funny to me how hard it is for carbrains to understand that adding friction to an activity makes people more careful and slower. In this case it also increases distance between the vehicle and pedestrians.

The City is literally lighting money on fire with stupid โ€œupgradesโ€ to roads like this. There was literally no problem w this intersection at Greystone and Valburn and now itโ€™s an obstacle course. @ALTERforATX
