Bad side effect of North American zoning is that it forces neighborhoods into a weird stasis where they are mostly uninteresting to young people. There's no transit here, it's hard to build a neighborhood cafe or music venue or anything else, no surprise they feel like dead zones

Anti-car urbanism is, at its core, a discriminatory practice by wealthy urban elites who seek to reduce the number of suburban people w/whom they interact. People who commute downtown because they canโ€™t afford to live there do so overwhelmingly in cars due to their efficiency.

I am not an extremist "fuck cars" guy but I understand why that movement exists: North American, particularly US culture is so biased towards cars that there is a lot of pent up frustration and anger towards a society that doesn't support surviving without a personal car.

Austin has too many car lanes, as a South Austin resident this particularly stands out to me in South Austin although it's a problem everywhere. From Central to South Austin we essentially have 5 highways (2 actual highways + three stroads with 4+ lanes, marked in pink)

If you want to have a SFH w/ a big yard/garage/setbacks that's fine but it should generally be making a tradeoff of being on the outskirts of town, not something we subsidize so that a few lucky (and prolly rich) families get to live in a SFH that's also a 5 minute drive downtown

True for Austin. You've got apartment dwellers mostly forced to live on noisy, dangerous arterial roads, with single family homes cloistered away behind them. It's bizarre and not how any sane person would design a city, but Americans will bend over backwards defending it.

Lamar is a nightmare all the time. More people should carpool, transit, or bike/ebike to Zilker/Barton instead of making every road a stroad because we see traffic sometimes ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Insane that the City of Austin turned Barton Springs Rd from a double lane to a single lane + bicycle lane. Auto traffic is backed up North on Lamar from Oltorf To Barton. Everyone is trying to turn left to enjoy Zilker Park and basically choked out. 400 cars / 2 bikes

Seriously: if you walk around near-South Austin, you see tons of people walking around _despite_ the terrible sidewalks. Austin has so much promise as a pedestrian city but is being choked by every thoroughfare being a monstrous 4-6 lane stroad.

Aside from ensuring Project Connect doesn't get pwned by the State, what would help Austin get competitive in the short/medium-term? Better non-car mobility + connection to the surrounding areas outside downtown. South Austin is a mess and striking contrast to downtown.

I bet if you just blindly passed a law in Texas that said every 4+ lane non-highway road in every major city in the state had to be reduced by one lane (to be used for walking, biking, or transit) it would be a net positive
