This article is infuriating, especially given the deaths from crashes that have happened in the past few days. The tradeoff isn't between bicycle lanes and parking. The tradeoff is between safety and driver comfort. People have died and will die if we don't change Connecticut Ave
This is 830 am rush hour on Connecticut Ave in front of Cleveland Park where one lane has been closed to traffic. Where are the cars? Where's that congestion that everyone talks about?
We got over 50 emails in support of the design and 2 against. The "some" neighborhood opposition is less than 4%. But the Cleveland Park Historical Society Architectural Review Committee voted 7-0 against. Historic Preservation is fundamentally undemocratic.
.
@MediumRareDC
is seeking approval to install a patio covering in Cleveland Park. HPRB rejected first design.
Apparently newest design still has some neighborhood opposition
Good day to remember that
@Indiquedc
has the best desi food in DC! I've been going there for over 15 years and it always reminds me of home. My uncle couldn't stop talking about how good the biryani is. And they always advocate for safe infrastructure on Connecticut Avenue.
What you are seeing here is a historically preserved parking lot that is empty almost all the time because it is too expensive to park in and right next to a metro stop that you can also see on the left side of this photo. Talk about a persistent policy mistake.
This is my neighborhood too. Don't use your veiled classism and racism to make a point about how shootings in "nice" neighborhoods deserve more outrage than other places in the city where they are far too common.
This is purely the fault of
@MayorBowser
and
@DDOTDC
. She announced safety enhancements to Connecticut Ave in December 2021 and reversed course this month. On Earth Day no less. No worries about safety, downtown, or the climate.
From what I can tell - crash involving at least three cars on Conn Ave near 5000 block of Conn Ave around 6pm tonight.
I saw car drivers using gas station to circumvent crash site, and saw two backed up L2 buses stuck and unable to go around.
Outside the polling place and there's a crash on Connecticut Ave. We need bike lanes NOW! What's the point of 6 lanes if one is always blocked by a crash.
This is 5:15pm on a Monday. Anyone who claims Connecticut Ave needs 6 lanes of personal car traffic & no lanes for buses/bicycles doesn't care about protecting people & the climate.
@DDOTDCDirector
can we change to 4 lanes of traffic to keep us safe while we wait for Concept C?
No matter how you look at it, we give cars more space in our city than people. Cars take up more space than buildings. More space than parks. We should think about that every time we talk about affordable housing, environmental sustainability, infrastructure, and safety.
Was curious again so I singled out parking lots by themselves from the roads category (there should be no parking lots in DC). Parking lots by themselves take up more space than 50+% of all buildings in the district.
Hey
@MayorBowser
&
@DDOTDC
, we literally had a CELEBRATION when you removed 14 parking spaces from Connecticut Ave. Thank you for this; just imagine the joy you will unleash when you give 1 lane of 6 on Conn Av back to the community with Concept C as we voted for and you decided.
Glad to see so many people on the Cleveland Park Promenade! I'm grateful to local leaders like those on
@ANC3C
who helped give this space back to the public.
Agree 100%.
@DDOTDC
has budgeted $9.7 million for simply adding parking to Connecticut Avenue. I hope
@charlesallen
and
@CMFrumin
do not allow them to waste this money for adding car storage to make the avenue more dangerous and slow for bus riders, pedestrians, AND drivers.
I'm excited to be running for re-election
#DCision22
! Working with the community has been a dream & I thought a video describing some of what we have done together would highlight the power of local politics to create public spaces for people! More at ! 1/2
Another day another crash right in front of where I live on a Saturday when my neighbors are out seeking to enjoy public space. Connecticut Ave is currently bad for EVERYONE, especially for drivers and for traffic flow. Let's get this redesign done
@MayorBowser
.
It's scary to think if people had not written in support of this, the (literally) 4 people against this barely visible pergola would have successfully blocked such a valuable outdoor space. I'm SO EXCITED and want to thank everyone who engaged!
You did it! The
@MediumRareDC
pergola is up. Civic engagement works. Great work by
@saulehforanc
and
@tammy
in getting this through the process. Time to get some steak!
So happy to see the Connecticut Avenue Service Lane being used by people instead of cars.
@DDOTDC
please start the now three-year delayed streetscape project so our community can have the space they so desperately need!
Local advocacy can be demoralizing sometimes, with rich NIMBYs, fear of change, and long processes blocking positive change. And then every now and then something like this happens which represents the views of the community. Thank you to everyone to advocated for this.
Signs don't win elections, but I think these beautiful ones by
@ZZZZach89
might actually do the trick. Don't forget to vote and always advocate for
#publicspacesforpeople
Look at all the cyclists that will soon have bike lanes on Connecticut ave
@MayorBowser
@MotoristRights
ah wait a minute there aren’t any. Definitely a good plan to take away parking and traffic lanes on a major north south artery NOT!
@DDOTDC
#saveconnecticutave
This is fantastic leadership, thank you
@charlesallen
and
@CMFrumin
! More people signed the pro Bike Lane Petition in 2 weeks than the anti-bike lane one in 2 years. Thank you for listening to the community, and also for cutting 5% of the paving budget as
@ANC3C
asked for!
Great job everyone! We have fought for this for two decades and counting, no sense if giving up this close to achieving a safer, more human-centric street design!
@CMFrumin
@CMCharlesAllen
@WABADC
@Ward3Bikes
Anti-statehood Republican who wants DC to retrocede into MD celebrates
@MayorBowser
's undemocratic and unilateral decision. Makes perfect sense since they both only care about
@MD_Driver_in_DC
and not about the people who actually live in DC!
It's time
@DDOTDCDirector
@DDOTDC
stop listening to Maryland commuters and get rid of this six-lane empty speedway where cars can go the wrong way, & replace it with something literally everyone else wants immediately. It already existed in 2021 and was deliberately taken away.
“These are Taliban judges in how they treat women’s bodies,” says CoMem Mary Cheh, a law school professor, speaking at Planned Parenthood news conference with Mayor Bowser, Co Chair Mendelson, CoMembers Brooke Pinto, Elissa Silverman and Christina Henderson.
@politicshour
@wcp
I'm the ANC Commissioner for Cleveland Park. Not only will me and my constituents allow it, we will all fight for it. The few loud voices in the neighborhood don't represent us.
Lots of candidates spoke at the
@WABADC
event for council candidates, but
@GoreforDC
was the ONLY candidate to actually do the ride. Can't have
#AJustDC
without experiencing what people experience.
Why is the DC Police Union so obsessed with imaginary bicycle lanes that won't be done till 2028 when they claim there is a real crime crisis happening in the city right now that we need to deal with immediately?
Going through my inbox as I return from a brief vacation: can't say I had it on my bingo card to find a letter from the D.C. Police Union to
@CMFrumin
opposing the bike lanes on Connecticut Avenue arguing they "may inadvertently compromise public safety."
Sigh,
@MayorBowser
has no convictions. She'll always put $$$ over people, which is why she first said Concept C "best meets the needs of our city" to get votes & today said it has "a lot of problems." When done, she'll be responsible for more deaths than any other mayor of DC.
Sorry to share but
@MayorBowser
has lost her courage on Connecticut Avenue bike lanes - unless
@CMFrumin
finds his courage the Avenue is just going to continue being a traffic sewer for MD commuters. So much for Vision Zero & being a world class city.
Here's how

I have a great idea to stop carjackings right now. Let's dump $100k in private citizen money & at least a similar amount of public money & then in 11 months we might have 1 empty council seat out of 13 and all carjackings will stop! Definitely an immediate and effective solution.
Ward 6 recall timeline:
(1) 6,203 valid W6 sigs due by Aug. 12
(2) DCBOE publicly posts all sigs on Aug. 15, with the 10-day challenge period ending on Aug. 24
(3) DCBOE has until Sept. 11 to certify all sigs
(4) Recall election scheduled within 114 days (so could be on Nov. 5)
If only a local, volunteer, elected body with great weight proposed a unanimous solution passed with consensus from businesses, residents, & advocacy groups. Remove rush hour parking restrictions and make Conn Ave a four lane road until we get Concept C.
Update crash with entrapment 3000 block Connecticut Ave NW. All patients extricated. Transporting 7 patients to various hospitals, 3 with life threatening injuries.

"To me, democratic socialism means democracy. It means creating public space that represents all of us, not just the wealthiest people in the country." 1/2
I don't mind this comment because this is what ANC 3C was like pre 2020: not representative of the neighborhood. But tonight with a new commission we are moving to lift the restaurant cap, support rent control, & advocate for students. It's Cleveland Park NOT Cleveland Parking.
The Cleveland Park farmers market is back! Lots of people enjoying the new streetscape &
@bikeshare
giving out free helmets, bottles, & merch to new members! I thanked them for the new station next to the metro & reiterated our ask for one at the end of the Klingle Valley trail!
We don't need the
@DDOTDCDirector
account anymore, they've turned into a parody themselves. They just said they will spend close to $10million creating parking on Connecticut Avenue called it "safety improvements"
DDOT remains committed to our investments in bike and pedestrian safety. $34 million was not removed from this budget line but shifted to a separate line to reflect Circulator reductions.
I hate to admit it, but a part of me loves how evil
@EJGoulet
is. He plays the role of villain perfectly, so much so that it's pretty endearing 😂. Read the whole thread.
Challenge accepted...& I'll start with you.
@henryzcohen
is a brave young man who entered a Council race as a high school student and showed exceptional poise & grasp of the issues. He will succeed in whatever path he chooses in life & I'm excited to see what lies ahead. (1/8)
With a new batch of results included, Matt Frumin now holds a lead in the Ward 3 race over Eric Goulet — 37% vs. 31% in what is proving to be the two-person race that was predicted. Citywide, nearly 78,000 ballots are now counted, for 19% turnout.
There's a confirmation hearing for
@DDOTDCDirector
later this month. He has a multitude of such incidents to answer for and there's still time for him to make systemic changes before then. If he doesn't, Councilmembers need to hold him accountable.
To hear that 2 kids and their parent were hit by a car this morning, on National Walk to School Day no less, should piss us all off.
Our goals around
#VisionZero
and safe passage need to be coordinated & linked!
I ignored weeks of
@MatthewFrumin
& his supporters barrage of lies & negative attacks against me on Twitter and Ward 3 listservs, wrongly thinking it wouldn’t matter. I won’t let
@tweetelissa
’s flock smear
@kenyanmcduffie
in the same vile way. (1/5)
Thank you Councilmember Frumin
@CMFrumin
! This is important not only because it's a safety, climate, and community issue, but because it's an issue of democracy with nearly unanimous elected support and grassroots efforts by the people who live closest to Connecticut Avenue.
@ChmnMendelson
Here's some feedback. The ANC Commissioner from Cleveland Park disagrees with this map because it has been formed with no community input and no engagement. Go with the map designed through the proper process over the best part of the last year with public meetings.
These aren't "mixed reviews" but overwhelming support. Let's not let a vocal minority have their opinions hold more weight than almost all of us who want safer streets. I'm not reposting all the people we lost to traffic violence these past days because it is too heartbreaking.
Given the
@OSSEDC
,
@dcpublicschools
, and
@DDOTDC
oversight hearings, budget cuts, and news, this is essentially what
@MayorBowser
has said to parents this week (same guy she sided with and gave a smile to at the ANC 4C meeting)
Anyone undecided about the Ward 3 race here's a (non-serious) guide. (I should have replaced evil with conservative but perhaps for most in DC it's synonymous?) No need to argue with me about placement, feel free to make your own if you disagree!
Who's ready to advocate for safety, community, and the climate? Here with
@Adam3C02

that she needs to go back to her decision from 2021 and give us a Safer Connecticut Avenue
@DcSafer
I am absolutely in support of striking
@AmericanU
workers and I am embarrassed to see a dozen MD officials publicly support the strike while DC electeds are silent. I challenge other DC elected officials to join me in publicly supporting the
@austaffunion
.
Also, there's just one quote against bicycle lanes in the article and all the others are in support. Three ANCs this week will vote on resolutions in favor of bicycle lanes. At public roundtables, we've had near unanimous support of bicycle lanes including
@marycheh
Here's the photo I care about more. Despite the news today, I'll continue my strong advocacy for protected bike lanes for the community and a redesign for Connecticut Avenue that supports our businesses. We can and will absolutely do both.
Scoop: D.C. pushes back Connecticut Avenue bike lane designs. Final concept design was initially expected this spring; now delayed to end of this year as DDOT takes growing input from advocates and opponents.
@axios
Nothing makes me prouder than to call
@haydengise
my future Commissioner colleague. The new

If workers at your business in Woodley Park choose to unionize, this is your first and final warning: If you commit an ULP— I will move to remove your liquor license. I will use all of the powers at my disposal to fight back on behalf of the workers.
This is the magic of
@Tammy
and
@Janell105Janell
who worked tirelessly to get this done with amazing coordination by
@chrispy_atlas
! So grateful to all of them for making our neighborhood better.
Make no mistake, Sharon Kershbaum and Muriel Bowser are royally screwing Matthew Frumin. It would have been the easiest thing in the world for him to listen to his noisiest constituents and oppose bike lanes on Connecticut Ave, but he stuck with data instead — and for what?
It's a small step, but really happy that
@wmata
announced today that starting next week, the L2 bus will operate every 10 minutes again during weekday rush hours! Now if we could only bring the L1 back,
@wmataGM
we advocated for it last year.
Thank you so much for this
@CMFrumin
! We are with you all the way to use the budget process to ensure protected bike lanes on Connecticut Avenue! Really appreciate your leadership!
I share many residents’ disappointment with DDOT's decision to exclude
#bikelanes
from the proposed safety enhancements on
#ConnecticutAvenue
. Read my full statement here:
The fact that
@DDOTDCDirector
still hasn't announced the decision for Connecticut Ave (was due back in August) shows that this recent uptick in
@DDOTDC
response times is all for short show. His confirmation hearing is in 8 days, and I'll bring this up as exemplifying his tenure.
@ashokbajajdc
@Change
The "Save Connecticut Avenue" people also want the service lane where Bindaas and Sababa have their streateries open to cars again. Would you like to have your outdoor seating removed too? This tweet is against your business model in more ways than one.
On Conn Ave at vam ness metro. A four car accident that shuts down the whole road is totally reasonable to expect when all drivers are carefully and respectfully driving at 25mph or less. Right??
@MayorBowser
@councilofdc
can we please get the road diet and safety improvements??
What if, and just think about this, the local ANC in the historic district voted unanimously that they don't care about the aesthetics and want to save lives. Do we still have to balance lives with aesthetics? Or should we act quickly and with conviction?
Bridge barriers are life-saving, there are many lives and much data to support this. I support Dr. Van Thof: We can do this in a way that will save lives and maintain the aesthetics of the Taft bridge. Her story is heartbreaking and truly connected w me.
Trump: "We have to take out the slums. We can't let homeless stay in the middle of our magnificent parks. We're gonna clean up Washington DC and make it a crime free zone. There's not gonna be any crime. We're gonna have laws, but we're gonna have to take it over."
@QColonRoosevelt
The fact that DC Urban Moms is criticizing you means that you are doing the right thing. It takes guts to fight power structures and you are so well prepared to take them on. They don't dignify a response but you showed class by doing so. Wiser than many candidates for council.
I am on an affordable housing call and am incredibly disturbed by the repeated pats on the back white people are giving themselves on the increase in Black residents in Ward 3 in the census. Ward 3 is over 80% white, they cannot be serious.
At this point the blame for all this rests solely on
@MayorBowser
and
@DDOTDC
who have stalled action on this, much like every other issue in this city.
I saw
@saulehforanc
while I was walking to my polling place. I told him I was voting for him and he leapt in the air with excitement. I have never felt like my vote mattered more!
#vote
Hey
@DDOTDC
myself and so many neighbors have kept asking for fixing this dangerous intersection where kids cross the street all the time and here's another bad accident with EMTs on site. Check the number of
@311DCgov
requests and please get a traffic light here ASAP.
Here's why I will vote for our ANC 3C resolution supporting Amendment 2123 relating to the Future Land Use Map (FLUM) of the Comprehensive Plan by
@OPinDC
Some key updates from the
@DDOTDC
meeting with
@ANC3C
and CPCA. Traffic volume during rush hour is down up up to 33%. DDOT has planned it's projections of traffic based on the yellow line in this graphic but we now have significantly less traffic on Connecticut Avenue.
Translation: "I don't want poor people to live close to me."
Actually, no need to even translate, here's a direct quote: "Housing broke people among wealthy people is a stupid idea."
This was posted on a moderated listserv.
OMG this posted on the Chevy Chase listserve today-our Ward 3 n'borhoods did not evolve into the fortresses of privilege that they are because of some benign, organic & innocent process.
And no please don't elaborate further - you have already dug yourself into a very deep hole.
One of my really good friends said that
@BrianneKNadeau
deserves support for all she does and the stances she takes despite the political environment. Today convinced me even more they were right.
Why even have a council-appointed task force AND a council redistricting committee if
@ChmnMendelson
is just going to ask his friends' opinion at a last minute meeting without any notice and draw the boundaries himself?
A meeting on Ward 3 redistricting, “town hall style,” with maps on the walls,
@dcpl
Cleveland Park Library…I was just saying Groundhog Day is one of my favorite films….oh, but wait,
@ChmnMendelson
didn’t invite the Subcommittee Chair on Redistricting…more like “Call Me Maybe”
On election night I made a rude gesture in a photo that I should not have. It was poor judgment driven by election night exuberance. I will do better and be better than that.
Post editorial page in Ward 3 also endorses newcomer Republican David Krucoff over Democratic nominee Matthew Frumin (nominated to replace Mary Cheh, who chose not to run.)

This razor-thin margin in our very competitive SMD is a testament to the hard work that everyone put into this campaign. Let's hope a progressive, sustainable, and equitable Cleveland Park prevails!

I talked to

for my day job, but everything I said about re-designing our infrastructure for our most vulnerable community members and how homelessness, food insecurity, and road accidents are all climate change and infrastructure issues guides my role on the ANC too.

Meanwhile, when do we start making hard choices on where we live rather than spend billions to repair and patch up?
The Uptown has been my North Star, and by building a neighborhood with public space for people where we ENCOURAGE more people to come and stay here, we can revive the Uptown and our neighborhood as a destination! Thank you for all those making this happen.
A group of neighbors in Cleveland Park are campaigning to reopen the iconic Uptown Theater as a nonprofit venue that combines arthouse film screenings, dining, and space for events.
