Here’s my story about the history of DC recalls
First authorized in 1979, none of the 7 people who’ve been mayor, 66 or so who’ve been a
@councilofdc
member, 2 elected AGs have ever been subjected to a recall election. Only Jack Evans was close
Media reports about the DC Council recall efforts mention that no DC CM has ever been recalled.
That understates - aside from the ANC level, there has NEVER been a recall election in DC history, period.
3 ANC have been recalled (out of 6 elections).
Dunno if this is a new trend, but at least 2 bachelorette parties in DC in last 6 months have done a theme where the bride to be dresses up as a founding father (George Washington?) and the bridesmaids dress up like the Secret Service.
During a shutdown -->
Members of Congress: Get paid
Congressional staffers: No pay, but get backpay
Congress' janitorial/cafeteria contractors: No pay, no backpay
Mrs. Barred was discharged this afternoon after nearly 9 days in the hospital, so all 3 of us are now finally home (she sent me home with Lil Miss yesterday).
Thank you so much again for your messages of outrage, support, and empathy.
DC again allowing bars and restaurants to be open 24/7 (with 4am-6am booze break) - this time for the Women's World Cup (July 20th-Aug 20th).
USA will have a 3a match on a Tues morning and hopefully a semis match on another Tues morning at 4a
I know it’s pretty standard to hate on the architecture of new DC buildings and Navy Yard in particular but I personally think this is a cool sight leaving the ballpark at night
Bars & restaurants should switch ASAP from "We sanitize, offer sick leave, and we have hand sanitizer dispensers" messages to "We are closed. Here is the link to our gift card and we are going to pay our employees until we can't, but one of our regulars set up a gofundme"
From the DMs.
Treatment of service charges like this isn’t unusual, and I don’t know rules on shift meals and the like at other spots but sharing with you for anyone else to provide context
For those who say it looks like Le Dip (will be part of same restaurant group), Le Dip was sorta modeled after Parc in Philly, which was sorta modeled after the original Pastis in NYC, so yup
After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.

@metrobardc
officially finally opens their bar in their 5000 series train car next week.
Pretty sweet.
Details coming soon, might be ticketed or reservation only to start.
(Invited to a soft opening/preview so drinks free to me)
Josh, there are two food halls steps from you. As a parent who did not not stroll my baby into several streateries and bars while walking her, love this response from Last Call.
“SAD”
The Lincoln Memorial is closed this morning following a local university graduation celebration that left litter, broken bottles and spilled wine and champagne covering the steps. We will reopen as soon as the area has been cleaned and made safe.
Nats now selling their $5 tickets (most Saturdays or big opponents are $9 or $15) District Grandstand tickets online. Instead of hoofing it to the box office, if your credit card is linked to a DC zip code, you can now buy them online
Catania Bakery at North Capitol and O NW.
This old school Italian bakery (opened here August 1932, original family sold it to current owner in 1978 who still run it today) mostly wholesales to delis and restaurants but is also open to public 7:30a-noon on Saturdays. 1/
Run, don’t walk (but don’t tell anyone else) to this hidden gem. You don’t have to take a Chinatown bus anymore to Carrie and Aiden’s stomping grounds to get a 🥯 anymore
🥂

Although Lil Miss Barred already has the best role model (her mom), it’s still incredible for
@VP
@KamalaHarris
to be both Black and Indian-American just like her.
BREAKING NEWS:
The DC indoor mask order will end February 28th (presumably will continue on transit and other locations where it never ended).
VaxDC requirement for indoor dining/gyms/etc. will end TOMORROW.
For some inspiration, please share a picture of what you consider to be the best piece of architecture in your city, however you choose to define architecture.
Kinda wild that hybrid work has really changed the downtown work happy hour scene so much so that for the first time in history Elephant and Castle has been described as an “awesome” “energy and vibe”
First time at Elephant and Castle. Packed. Slammed. This might be the first 5:00pm Happy Hour where I feel like a true DC resident. This is why I moved here. The energy and vibe here is awesome. Drinks from bartender Tatiana pouring quickly. Met amazing folks from State, NASA,
Here’s a request from someone
“A DC friend is moving to NYC and I want to make a tote bag with a bunch of DC things on it but leaning more towards the sarcastic side… interns, motorcades, school groups, etc. I’ll probably put jumbo slice on it to but I’m running out of ideas”
Things will be reopening fully, but these spots will not be back.
Remember - a lot (most?) spots that have been open during pandemic are in massive debt and likely owe a lot of rent and other bills. So keep supporting the spots you want to survive.
It’s been 1 year since Mrs. Barred came home after 9 days in the hospital after her harrowing experience post giving birth to Lil Miss Barred. She’s still recovering but is such an incredible mother to one awesome now-toddler.
Today marks 8 years of Barred in DC. Thanks to all -the few who’ve been following since the beginning (took 16 months to hit 1000 followers) to those who followed in the past crazy year (gained nearly 8000) when this account took a weird turn that I wish never needed to go. 🍻🥂
Love that Laura’s well-deserved salt towards Jeni’s MO for squeezing out locally owned ice cream spots has sustained for at least 6 years even into her post-local food writer career
For those of you who don’t live in the center of town and have been getting messages from friends and family about whole city is locked down and boarded up, I found this image

So proud of Mrs. Barred for recounting her harrowing birth story in this essential
@EastoftheRiver
piece by
@ekogorek
which hammers home racial disparities in maternal health care in DC.
Here are some excerpts but please read
Friend sent me the menus for
@SnappysDC
- says it will be opening in Petworth (on Ga Ave a couple blocks north of Metro) on Saturday.
This menu is incredible-lots of great things, including cash discounts,tax included, and underrated-listing which drinks are rails/calls
PSA if you’re on the playground saying hi to the stranger white parents of the kid playing with your kid it’s ok to also say hello to the stranger Black/Brown parents of the kid playing with your kid
Not in small part to your thoughts and prayers and good vibes, Mrs. Barred’s condition is improving and everything is tracking well. I wanted to share another anecdote as well as another and mom and daughter enjoying their company while she was in our room for extended time today
Mi Vida debuts starting tomorrow perhaps DC's cheapest margarita - $5 "rita of the day" 3-6p daily on patio only (14th/T and 7th/F locations only).
Also starting $15 entrees and $25 3-course meals til 4p weekdays at each DC location (including The Wharf)
Almost a week old, Lil Miss Barred is pondering the next Twitter poll and thinking she got a raw deal since her parents last trip away from home was French Polynesia, not a hospital
.
@SnappysDC
is fuckin awesome, as advertised.
Nice to meet co-owner Sean Ryan and company.
Five people have bought the Cheers shots ($6 for everyone in the bar) - (it would have cost over $400 but knocked it down to $300)
