I’m 41, and my high school coach will always be Coach Long, and my college coach will always be Coach Ingles.
For someone who is coach, calling that person by their first name just does not feel right.
Mom, dad, grandma, grandpa…those are lifetime names. So is “coach”.

When I was a senior in HS a D1 school came to watch me and the other starting pitcher throw. My dad talked to the coach an asked what number they needed to see. The number was 85. I sat 83, and the opposing pitcher hit 88. My team won 3-0 and the other pitcher got the offer. I

Here is a rough idea of where HS pitchers need to be at velo wise to be a recruitable college pitcher:
D3: 78-80+
D2: 83-86+
D1: 87-88+
There are many factors that can influence those numbers (age, height, off-speed stuff, etc), but I hope this helps.
We will pick three winners for this week’s plyo giveaway on Sunday night (and we will make the announcement here) to anyone who RT’s this post.
Good luck!

Today I had the opportunity to pitch (at age 41) at
@MunsonStadium15
, a place where I’ve been fortunate to pitch at for 25 years (literally).
But in this game, I got to warm up and long toss with my 10 year old son who loves baseball himself. He also threw a pregame bullpen next
If you are a HS pitcher looking to play at the next level:
1. Train hard and develop in the weight room.
2. Learn to throw as hard as genetically possible.
3. Learn to spin it.
4. Make a 60 sec video showcasing your stuff.
5. Post the video to Twitter and tag

Thank you to

for signing a ball for my son Mikey today. He was so excited.
Thank you for being such a great role model for so many kids. 🔥🔥🔥
HS Athletes: D3 baseball is very strong in Ohio. There are four Ohio schools in the top 25. I strongly recommend getting out to a game to watch one of these top schools play this spring and you’ll see some very good baseball.

When I was in HS, we had our tryouts in the gym.
Our coach told everyone that during catch play, if a ball was dropped by either catch partner, both had to do 10 pushups.
Even worse was the fact that when the ball hit the wall it was very loud since it banged off the retracted
It’s great to see so many talented NE Ohio players making commitments to

When pitchers need to feel their hips engage and rotate, we suggest this drill.
This is great for pitchers who are too linear or who struggle to rotate the back hip into foot strike.

The team is playing well and Tim has done an incredible job after taking the reigns shortly before the season started.
He is the leader Akron needs moving forward.

Our family lost one of the best people I’ve ever known this week. My grandfather passed at the age of 94.
He was a lifelong teacher, coach, and school administrator and he had a big influence on me deciding to persue my own teaching/coaching career.
We will miss you, Grandpa.
My son Mikey got to throw our the first pitch at the Federal League All-Star game. This game is a great opportunity for our area seniors and I’m happy
@VeloSportsOhio
could be a sponsor and support this.
Yesterday I pitched in my first adult league game of the year at the newly renovated Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium. What a job Canton has done there.
But my favorite part was being able to warm up in the OF with my 8 year old son. He thought it was pretty cool as well.
It is great seeing Tweets showing the team's starting rotation schedule. This helps pitchers plan their bullpens, workouts, and overall routine.
Pitchers should know ASAP when they are starting. They should not find out when they arrive at the field.
I get to take the mound again after two years off. The last game I pitched I tore my Achilles’ tendon.
I feel fortunate I can throw today to say the least.
I spoke out against weighted baseball velocity training over 6 years ago and it cost me hundred of thousands in legal fees in lawsuits. Jeff I hope the

I saw a tweet from a “guru” yesterday who said a 19 year old could never teach him anything about pitching.
Oddly enough I saw that tweet when I was on the floor with one of our athletes who is 19. We were working on new drills he was showing me.
I learned something from him.
This is gold and the takeaway here is “The less pitches a hitter sees during an at bat the better chance you have to get him out.” - GM
Go for the K on 0-2. Don’t waste that chance.
Our LHPs worked on their pickoff moves to 1B today and the first drill in the series is from a chair.
This is to isolate the throw and focus on not rotating the shoulders and throwing from a lower arm slot.

If your goal is to play at the collegiate level, please take note. Manny is pitching at the Division 3 level. His velocity, spin, command, and off-speed stuff is all electric.

I had an athlete recently tell me he wouldn’t be participating in VIP this off-season.
My response?
I wished him good luck, thanked him for his hard work, and left the door open for future opportunities. I didn’t ask him what his plans were moving forward.
He later told me he
A common thing I hear, mostly from people who don’t know me, is that all I care about is velocity.
That’s funny to me considering during my career I pitched on my best days in the mid 80’s and relied on commanding the FB, changing speeds, and throwing effective pitch sequences
Notice how
@STR0
focuses on:
1. Back leg stability and balance
2. Loading the back hip
3. Upright shin angle
4. Opening the hips into foot strike
5. Keeping his shoulders closed at foot strike.
A lot is going on in this clip.

should address the fact that only a handful of teams can actually pay game’s best players. There are more ways to address this issue than expanding the playoffs.

Lifting 5-7 days a week is not uncommon for HS athletes while pro athletes lift 3-4 days a week.
The answer is pro athletes understand they need to allow their body time to

HS players take note.
College players regularly lift after games (even walk offs).
It’s a part of the routine at that level.
If you’re goal is to play in college, that’s a routine you should start.
Strength training just can’t stop during the season.
Congratulations to
@beidelsc5
on making his collegiate debut for
@OhioStateBASE
and getting his first hitter out.
Landon is looking sharp and really comfortable.
I’ve trained two pitchers that were cut from their HS team who are both pitching at the D1 level this year.
I asked both their advice and the both said the same thing.
“Believe in yourself”
If you were cut from your HS team, it doesn’t mean your baseball career is over.
If you love the game, find a way to keep playing.
Ask for feedback, create a plan, and get to work. I know many players who got cut who made it the next year, and some are now playing in college.
I was watching a D1 college baseball game on ESPN +. Here is how the B1 went:
BB, BB, BB, HBP, BB, pitching change.
A nightmare outing to say the least. It was cold (30s), windy, and the SP didn’t have a feel for his off-speed.
If you’ve pitched, you’ve been in a situation
I’m not sure I can think of a gutsier performance when it matters the most than what
@LoerJustin
did for
@XavierBASE
.
Justin comes in the 8th inning leading 2-1 in an elimination game vs.
@VandyBoys
and dominates and throws a scoreless inning.
Back out for the 9th….4 hours
Maybe a better solution is to talk to the player about his belt (and give him an extra if you have one) instead of posting this on Twitter.
People forget things. It happens. As a coach, help them out.

When I was coaching in college, I went to watch a kid pitch based on a recommendation from his HS coach. The coach said he was throwing in the low 80s, good CB, etc.
I made the hour drive to the game and he was throwing 72-74. I did not stay long.

It’s pretty awesome coaching his team.
