When I was a senior in HS a D1 school came to watch me and the other starting pitcher throw. My dad talked to the coach an asked what number they needed to see. The number was 85. I sat 83, and the opposing pitcher hit 88. My team won 3-0 and the other pitcher got the offer. I…
The point I’m making is that I wasn’t good enough to play D1 out of HS, and that is okay. Keep working and work to reach your potential, no matter where that takes you.
Secondly, playing the game at higher levels requires certain skills. Velocity is a big part of that. Today,…

Great story…I’ll take the guy who can win ballgames. I didn’t throw very hard as a lefty in HS but I had good stuff and knew how to pitch. I got a few offers and went 14-3 in college and played in 2 College World Series. It’s not always about how hard you throw. 🤙
@pitchingschool
It’s sad but true. All college coaches look at is speed. If you can throw hard they feel they can teach you to throw strikes. It doesn’t matter how much you pitch like Greg Maddux, if you don’t hit 90’s, you’re not getting an offer.
@pitchingschool
Good post Mike and thanks for sharing. Performance on the field should be first and foremost, not 2 MPH. Goof for you and glad you had a great career
@pitchingschool
To me the point of this story is how flawed the reliance of metrics is. Imagine a school today not taking Greg Maddox because he doesn’t throw mid-90s. Analytics is destroying careers, all the way down to the youngest of youth teams. Very sad

Old teammate is pitching coach at major D1 told me velo is great, but worthless without command. They don’t have enough time with all of the kids that come in to develop anymore. Plenty of kids with velo, few with legit command, showcase numbers not throwing a strike is no go.
@pitchingschool
To your point, I signed d1 out of hs. I knew I was 86-88 at showcases. College coach kept pitch book a secret. I pitched mid relief before TJ injury and never knew college mph. He just wanted us effective. Cheers.
@pitchingschool
Or do you want to get innings and work in right away…then move on..or better yet..forgo the next step and into pro ball…so tired of hearing about D1 out of high school…you know what…if your good enough to START D1 out of high school…then sign when you get drafted..
@pitchingschool
I don’t know how many guys I played with…don’t remember any of them saying mmmmmmman…my dream is to play D1…maybe heard the college World Series once or twice…but the goal was to play pro ball..and what’s the BEST WAY TO LEARN HOW TO PITCH IN PRO BALL…BE IN PRO BALL!!!!!!!!
@pitchingschool
Now back to this kid who got the shaft on that scholarship to the other kid…do we know all the factors..height…weight…attitude..grades…MOXY….and yes lineups helping each other..if one D1 was there to see you..I don’t blv for a second that there can’t or won’t be more…
@pitchingschool
I’m sorry but if you are good enough..THEY WILL FIND YOU…I grew up in a town of 9k people…got drafted in the 5th round….didn’t attend all the “give me thousands” for 2 innings and a T-shirt showcases…I worked my ass off along with gods gifts..
