A company just launched a convertible into space and recovered the booster rockets and we watched in HD from the rockets BECAUSE WE LIVE IN THE FUTURE.

To my colleagues & friends in the National Weather Sevice:
I am proud of you & the work you do every hour of every day to serve your communities & keep them safe. I appreciate our partnership and work toward building a Weather Ready Nation.
What you do matters.
Thank you.
A lot of people wondering what NC State’s postseason basketball run means for the program.
Here’s an idea: Going forward, let’s have NC State - the team most associated with Jim Valvano - in the Jimmy V Classic.
Your move, ESPN.
My wife and I welcomed our fourth into the world on Saturday morning. It has rained - hard - every day she’s been alive. If this streak continues, we may be willing to travel to provide drought relief.
Our three oldest children just made the mistake of saying they were bored. You should have seen my wife’s eyes light up.
They’re now vacuuming, dusting, and wiping windows.
That’ll teach ‘em.
Just a note of gratitude for the
@NWS
,
@FAA
, and
@TSA
folks who worked tirelessly for the American people through the shutdown.
Thank you for your commitment to your work and to keeping forecasts, airplanes, travelers moving smoothly, in spite of it all.
I appreciate you.
"The fire perimeter from the goats is what saved us today." - Rep from the Reagan Library.
Ventura County Fire folks bring out a legion of goats to eat up brush and create a natural fire break.
Just spoke with my brother who lives four blocks from the Atlantic in Carolina Beach. He and his fiancée needed no convincing - they’re leaving tomorrow. Couldn’t be prouder.

@SickosCommittee
At an NC State game decades ago, back when they played on campus, they made a PA announcement asking for Dr so-and-so needing to report to the building with the reactor in it “immediately”, leading the student section to begin chanting “meltdown! meltdown!”
I don’t know about you, but middle school - especially 8th grade - was a pretty awful and, frankly, dark experience.
That 30+ years later I’d be working in the glow of
@30RockTree
would have been simply beyond comprehension for 8th grade me.
I hope he’s proud.
For the record:
The largest crowd to ever watch a hockey game in the state of NC was Saturday night: Canes, Caps,
#StadiumSeries
, 57k.
The second largest crowd to ever watch a hockey game in the state of NC was two days later, Heels, Pack,
#FrozenFinley
, 24k.
Thank you to everyone who voted in the
@nwas
election, regardless of your choices. It’s a privilege to have this opportunity to serve you, and I’m looking forward to what we can do together.

More than 80 NBC & Telemundo meteorologists are now covering the weather from home to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. Grateful to them and their families for welcoming us into their homes.
Imagine the worst weather you’ve ever personally experienced. For most, it’s probably a tornado or severe thunderstorm that lasted a few *minutes*.
Now imagine that for *hours* upon unrelenting hours. That’s what the northern Bahamas are and will be enduring with
#Dorian
.
Best wishes and deep gratitude to my colleagues with the
@NWS
, Air Traffic Control, and all the government employees under the “essential” umbrella working through the
#Shutdown
on only the promise they will get paid for their work *after* it’s over. Thank you.
It's a red letter day in my life. For the first time ever, I plugged a USB cable into the port without having to flip it over only to flip it back again because I had it right the first time.
Hot take: Weather systems do not “underperform” or “overperform”.
Weather systems abide by the fundamental equations of the atmosphere.
To suggest a system over- or under-performed is to suggest that one’s prediction was prescriptive when it is not nor could have been.
“Dad, something’s wrong with Lucy.”
It’s a day every pet lover dreads. Our 15yo cat had been having some health issues recently, but we thought we had more time. Gonna miss her big eyes and loud purrs.
Good night, sweet Lucy.
The weather at RDU airport today SO FAR has included:
Rain, heavy rain, mist, sleet, light snow, thunderstorms, visibility down to 3/4 mi, rapidly rising pressure, lightning, wind shifts, 2"+ of rain, wind gusts to 45 mph, 25°+ temp drop, & severe t'storm & flash flood warnings.

@PatWxspo
and his
@NWS
colleagues in Paducah and elsewhere saved lives a week and a half ago … and last week … and countless other times, too. Couldn’t be prouder of them and the work they do.
Pat Spoden was one of the first meteorologists to identify the tornado that destroyed parts of Kentucky last week. He told 60 Minutes that debris from the storm was spiraling to as high as 30,000 feet – about the height where some commercial airliners fly.
Starting in 2022, the
@ametsoc
Award for Broadcast Meteorology is being renamed in honor of June Bacon-Bercey, the first African-American woman to receive a degree in meteorology and the first formally-trained female TV meteorologist.
NYT obit:
After recognizing all the cum laude/magna/summa folks by having them stand,
@NCState
Senior Vice Provost Tom Miller spoke to those who didn't stand. "I gotta go off script...I wasn't asked to stand at my graduation, either. I graduated 'thank laude'...You're gonna do just fine."
My 10yo wanted to stay up and watch the debate tonight. “I’ll watch anything if I can stay up late!”
She made it five minutes then went to bed without saying a word.
Make of that what you will, but it made me sad.
This was supposed to be a “slight risk” area for tornado. The entire 2nd floor blew off when the twister touched down. Luckily residents in Newnan, GA (40 miles sw Atlanta) say had 20 min to react thanks to emergency alert system which probably saved many lives.

Why isn't NC's governor ordering evacuations like SC's governor is for
#Florence
?
Simple - in NC, evacuations are generally triggered at the county or city/town level.
And some are doing just that - Dare county was the first to call for evacuations this morning.
Happy Twister Day, everyone!
Read THR’s original review:
Read how the movie shaped the number of meteorology students and job prospects a decade later:
So, while I sit waiting to be de-iced here in Detroit, let’s look at de-icing and why it’s really, really important to getting you to where you want to go. Let’s start with a quick video of what it looks like when you finally take off. 1/
No disrespect to the joint they chose, but there are dozens of local joints owned and operated by local pitmasters that would have been a better choice here.
Do better.
I’m sitting outside at a patio at a local fast food establishment. There are some tables in shade and some tables in full sun. All the shade tables are taken.
What’s happening at the next table over is warming my soul. And maybe it will warm yours.

I generally don’t post pics of my kids on social, but I won’t pass up the opportunity to say how much I love being a
#girldad
- times four. Life with my daughters is loud, and relentless. And I wouldn’t have it any. other. way. I am blessed.
And as they swap stories there are laughs—belly laughs, even. From complete strangers.
And all because of a moment of kindness, of inviting someone else in from the elements.
At the end of the day, we’re all people, and we’re all better when we look after one another.

It seems that a partial gov’t shutdown is nigh. Yet many civil servants will continue to report to work, including meteorologists, air traffic controllers, and public safety folks. Others will be furloughed with no guarantee of pay. Hang in there and thank you for what you do.
Minor but important point: Just because the NHC or “the models” keep the center of
#Dorian
offshore doesn’t mean they keep the storm offshore. Dorian is not a point, and significant impacts will be felt hundreds of miles away from the center.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
By nearly every objective measure, Carolina should win tonight, claiming its 19th ACC title.
They have a better record.
They have better stats.
They have fresher legs.
They have the league’s coach of the year and more all-conference players.
Then again…

I'm immensely proud of our NBC & Telemundo weather teams and their work on Hurricanes Hanna & Isaias over the last couple of weeks. They helped their communities prepare for high winds, flooding rains, storm surge, tornadoes, and more. A privilege to work with them every day.
It's important to give credit where credit is due: three days ago,
@NWSSPC
took the unusual step of issuing a Day 3 Enhanced outlook with the morning update.
They nailed it.
Kudos to Matt Mosier who first went Enhanced and all the folks at
@NWSSPC
for a slam dunk on this one.
April 16, 2011, is a day that is etched into my memory forever. For many, it is a day they wished they could forget.
It was the largest one-day tornado break on record in NC, and it took 24 fellow North Carolinians from us.
I'll share some thoughts today.

#April16Tornadoes
So, how much rain did
#Florence
dump on NC? The estimate is around 8 trillion gallons of water… about the same amount of water as is being held in Lake Mead by the Hoover Dam.
I have all three of my kids watching Mr Rogers Neighborhood. The originals. After one ended, Jelly Bean exclaimed, “Another one!”
My work here is done.
Les Lemon, a giant in meteorology, has passed.
His contribution to our understanding of severe storms and their presentation on radar (among other things!) has saved many lives.
Chuck Doswel has written about him here:
+May his memory be eternal!
While some of us are gathered here and online for
#NWAS22
, I wanted to kick off a conversation about how we use purple aka magenta aka fuchsia, especially in short-fuse weather warning graphics.
I'm concerned we're backing ourselves into a corner we don't want to be in.

There are three certain things in life: Death, taxes, and:
Get your trash & recycling to the curb the night before, trucks come late.
Forget, and the trucks are there before first light.
Why light up every device in the state for an emergency alert but provide *zero* useful information?
The device I’m holding has more computing power than we needed to send people to the moon - maybe a name and a description? More on the circumstances? Something?
Discussion from
@NWSNewOrleans
says it better than I can.
Hurricane
#Ida
will slam into LA tomorrow as a major hurricane, bringing massive storm surge, torrential rains, & high winds.
Lives & livelihoods will be changed.
Say a prayer for our brothers & sisters tonight.
Pro tip: If you’re going to call someone twelve times in a row and eventually leave a screaming voicemail message full of expletives to express your disgust, be sure you have the correct telephone number first.
NC folks - this is your tax dollars at work (and I mean that in a FANTASTIC way). If you live in a area susceptible to flooding (if you can see or hear water anywhere!) bookmark this site. Great resource for determining how bad things could get and where.
Inland & river flooding will likely be a sig risk late week/weekend due to
#Florence
. (Subject to track/moisture convergence areas). NC has a top notch river flood inundation mapping system that started due to
#Floyd
in 99’. This is a site to bookmark:
Thanks to all the meteorologists who are working tonight and tomorrow to keep your people - citizens, viewers, listeners, and visitors - informed of the ever-changing weather. I hope you are able to find time to celebrate very soon.
