Today in history 🗓 4 July 1977: A derecho in Minnesota and northern Wisconsin caused a 166-mile long, up to 17-mile wide damage swath. Studying it, Ted Fujita proved that thunderstorm "downbursts" can cause considerable damage and coined the term “bow echo” from radar imagery.

On this first day of #AAPIHMonth , AMS honors Tetsuya Theodore (Ted) Fujita, aka "Mr. Tornado." Dr. Fujita created the Fujita scale of tornado intensity and damage, and his discovery of the "downburst" wind shear phenomenon has saved many lives in the aviation industry.

Strong evidence of particularly low outflow resistance above hurricanes in 2017 enabled them to reach their maximum potential intensity faster. Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose, and Maria were unusually strong because their outflow was unusually strong. Presented at #AMS33HURR .
