So, on my birthday today I received one extra special suprise present... Isaac Robert Barton.
Have literally never been happier in my life.
Mother and baby doing super well.
Having nicked my birthday, I just hope he doesn't decide to start his own podcast 🐣👶🎁♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
5 websites directly related to the ideas in my book "How I wish I'd taught maths", all completely free:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Really hope people find them useful
Isaac now has a little brother. Jacob William Barton, born yesterday at 2.45am.
Isaac last night: "I don't like that baby"
Isaac this morning when Jacob was crying: "don't worry Jacob, your big brother is here"
So that issue is clearly resolved 🥸
40 mixed-topic mini quizzes to help students prepare for Year 6 SATs. Use in class or online for free. Oh, and each one has a follow-up quiz as well.
Hope they are useful
My favourite year keeps getting better. This little cracker due end of January. Just enough time to play them the back catalogue of podcasts, so they arrive fully versed in Cognitive Load Theory, Explicit Instruction, Desirable Difficulties & "flipping heck" 😊♥️🎉🍼👶
I just wanted to thank everyone who has been kind enough to buy my book. I am relieved it is finally out into the wild, incredibly nervous about its reception, but above all happy and proud. I really hope you all enjoy it. Thank you so, so much. Craig
One year ago today I was a man who could sleep, string sentences together and generally function. But I was nowhere near as happy.
The best birthday present ever 🎁🎂🎉❤️❤️❤️
I fear my professional life has officially peaked.
7 years ago I was lucky enough to watch a
@dylanwiliam
workshop in Bolton that changed everything. These last two days I have had the pleasure and honour of delivering a workshop in Sweden alongside him.
It's downhill from here
Had the first operation of my Long Covid treatment today. All seems to have gone well.
My priority now is to make sure I get some lunch before they boot me out.
Apologies if I'm slow to reply to emails and DMs over the next few weeks
Thanks so much for all your kind messages last week. They really helped.
I'm staying away a little while longer, but incase you were worried about my productivity, fear not!
I've invented the game "What's in the box?".
Here's the dramatic conclusion to today's installment
Bit disappointed by the Game of Thrones finale? GCSE paper 1 didn't go as well as your students hoped? Feeling down about Brexit?
Then here is my son laughing his head off at a dummy 🐣
I do not write this for any sympathy, but just to explain why I am quiet, and hopefully let others who may be feeling something similar know that you are not alone!
Take care, be safe, and see you soon

I launched a new project. 200 free exercises and activities created by me,
@FortyNineCubed
&
@mathsmrgordon

Every year I have the honour of sharing my birthday with my little boy, Isaac. He's numbers mad and very excited today that he is a square number and daddy is a (worryingly big) prime number
📺Free CPD videos📺
There are now 205 short videos on all aspects of teaching from some incredible practitioners and thinkers... and me. All categorised and available for free here:
After epic negotiations over his fee, I'm pleased to say that my son Isaac is officially endorsing the US version of my book, with a snazzy cover and a new foreword by

I am thinking of doing one of these a day if you think they will be useful for your online lessons - perhaps as a starter?
I use data from DQs to find tricky questions & real-life student explanations given on the site.
Let me know if it is useful or not (I won't be offended!)
If you are into your worked examples (and who isn't???), then this open-access collection of new research is a gold mine! 🪙🥳📝
I have also added it to my online course on making the most of worked examples:
Might get this tweet recreated as a tattoo, or name my unborn baby Dylan-Wiliam Barton. Or probably both. Thanks
@dylanwiliam
, I really don't know what to say.
@mrbartonmaths
' book "How I wish I'd taught maths" is, in my view, the most important book written on math teaching in the last 20 years, and it's now available in the US: . If you teach math at any level, you need this book.

Just done my first ever "mute" of a person on Twitter who pounces on literally everything I say, or that people say about me, but offers nothing constructive in return. Grrrrr!!!! And with that, I am going to go and play with my 11 day old son 🥰
Currently preparing for
@dylanwiliam
's return to the podcast next week. There are some cracking paragraphs in his new book, but this is one of my faves...

I miss face-to-face conferences so much. But one advantage of all of my workshops being online is that I can take Isaac for a morning walk and still be ready to talk to Irish maths teachers at
#mathsfest2020
about misconceptions at 11am 🧮📝🧠🎲
🚨New episode🚨
@mathsjem
discusses 10 strategies that led to her and her team's incredible GCSE Maths results. Jo talks a lot of sense - apart from when it comes to mini-whiteboards. Enjoy!
As people start to receive my book in the next few days I just wanted to thank
@JohnCattEd
for publishing it, Emma for making it look beautiful, Meena for making it make sense, Kate & Isaac for letting me write it, and everyone who has bought it.
I really hope you enjoy it 😬🤞
🚨 BOOK ALERT 🚨
If you buy one maths book in the next few months... make it

But if you have the appetite for another, then this is out in February
Working title: "the hopefully not too disappointing sequel" 📘🔢🧮😬
Following my email this morning, I have added a few more links to free maths resources that might prove useful in the event of school closures.
I hope people find it useful in this difficult time.

It's that time of year when Isaac and I share the same birthday. Tough year, but looking forward to today.

Speaking at a primary school event in Birmingham today. Looking forward to the bit where I suggest ripping down all classroom displays is a good idea. What could possibly go wrong???? 😬😬😬
🚨Free resource alert🚨
With so many people sharing such amazing stuff for the advance information for GCSE maths, I wanted to do my bit.
So, here are DQ quizzes mapped to each of the objectives for

next week!
I'm getting a bit of stick about my Ban Classroom Displays article from my book in today's
@SecEd_Education
. But I'm staying firm. They've got to go. Is anybody with me? Mum, are you there? 😬
My new book, "Reflect, Expect, Check, Explain", went to the printers on Friday ready for its 28th February release.
I read Isaac a few paragraphs... and this happened.
If I can re-tag it in the Parenting and Sleep categories on Amazon, I could be on to a winner.
Reading Charlie & the Chocolate Factory to Isaac. We've had some pretty dark chapters, but tonight Charlie found the last Golden Ticket and Issac's mouth hung open, then he jumped up and screamed "Yes!!!!". His last words before sleep were: "I'm so happy".
And so am I.
In what I'm calling the "Live Aid of Educational Podcasts", 50+ of my favourite people recorded their answer to "what did you learn this year?". There is absolute gold in here for teachers of any subject or age group. Thank you so much to all involved 😊
Today I'm visiting Eton College.
I'm planning to propose I offer my workshops on worked examples, problem solving and formative assessment in exchange for 7 years free tuition for Isaac...

I am pleased to say that the Kindle version of my book, "How I wish I'd taught maths" is now available. So, even if all physical books are destroyed in a dystopian future, an electronic record of my horrendous teaching mistakes should endure 📘
