Black and Latinx children may be more likely to have parents/ family members who are essential caregivers/workers who stand a higher risk of exposure. This is not about genes.
1 out of 3 kids hospitalized for the coronavirus was admitted to the ICU, a CDC analysis finds. Hispanic children were about 8 times as likely as white children to be hospitalized, while Black children were 5 times as likely.

Justice Sotomayor brings stunning clarity to the Supreme Court's decision tonight to let stand the Texas law that effectively guts abortion rights in that state
Already there's this myth and narrative that only a handful of Black women in the U.S. qualify to serve on the Supreme Court. Folks, it's inaccurate, utterly illogical, and plays into baseless stereotypes--based on standards applied to current Supreme Court Justices.

On these shelves (and ones unseen) are the works of many from whom I have learned so much,
@ratemyskyperoom
. Books are a salvation and their availability is central to democracy. Thank you for taking note.
The Mississippi Department of Health's most recent investigation of maternal mortality, found that Black women accounted for “nearly 80% of pregnancy-related cardiac deaths.” Black women are 118 more likely to die by carrying a pregnancy to term in MS than by having an abortion.
The criminalization of abortion is deeply tied to the U.S. legacy of policing women's bodies, says law professor
@MicheleBGoodwin
.
She says the new wave of punitive anti-abortion laws are "cruel" and designed to target Black, Brown and working-class women.
As the day comes to a close and so many are understandably devastated by the Supreme Court's dismantling of Roe v. Wade, keep in mind that when it's the darkest, that is when we can best see the light of stars and new paths to freedom.
What I've heard from Black students at top 10 law schools in the past week: "My professors tell me since I don't attend Harvard or Yale, I can never become a law professor." So many reasons why this is problematic & disturbing in the legal academy .

on how RICO charges have been leveraged against Black women, including by Guiliani in NY. The 1980s & 90s were replete w/ cases of Black moms & girlfriends losing their freedom and children for far less than the Georgia RICO charges. 👇🏿
Guiliani threatened to jail me for refusing to testify before the grand jury against my husband (we had a toddler & 3-mo-old baby). I wasn’t jailed because I had a prominent pro bono attorney but several other defendants’ family members & activists (grand jury resisters) were. >>
True. And yet the mockery of women's constitutional rights and privacy. Her private choice on public display... Women ought to be concerned when the most vulnerable must go to court for such an outcome.
30 years ago, Anita Hill brought forward her experiences before the Senate Judiciary Committee--it was a shameful display by members of our Senate. Today, flashbacks.

Mark this day. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg used the power within her reach to elevate women's equality. An indefatigable warrior on behalf of women's rights has passed.
BREAKING: Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who charted a course for women’s rights at the U.S. Supreme Court and became a legal, cultural and feminist icon, has died from complications from cancer. She was 87.
So, when I write about the history of gynecology, seeking to shut out women, displace them from the care of women, and monopolization of the field by men, the modern iterations are not hard to find...

. Amanda Zurawski underscored what is at stake when politicians and judges make political theater of women's pregnancy experiences. Her testimony was truly moving and so important.
Listen to Amanda Zurawski testify about the physical and psychological trauma that Texas' abortion bans inflicted on her after her pregnancy failed. It's a horrific story that has played out again and again since the Supreme Court abolished the right to abortion.

A chapter in my forthcoming book, "Policing the Womb" has a chapter titled "Hospital Snitches: When Doctors and Nurses Become Police Informants." Starts with the case of Barbara Dawson who dies in front of a squad car, feet away from hospital that called police on her.
One of the nurses on my floor heard a patient mention his outstanding warrant and called the police to report him. She wanted to make sure they could pick him up on discharge. She told him he wasn't allowed to leave his room.
Police don't belong in or around hospitals.
Quick take lesson from Dobbs: Only 1 male justice out of 6 voted to preserve Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. (He just retired) The Mississippi legislature that enacted the antiabortion law: 86% male. Women's power, representation, and critical mass matter...

Mr. Bopp and his organization should realize Girl Doe is a child, not an adult. Girls and women do not benefit from rape. There isn't a reason that justifies rape. Little girls do not benefit from being raped, followed by nine months of pregnancy trauma, & pre-teen motherhood.
For those who thought that abortion was the dividing line, think again. The Supreme Court (Alito opinion) has already conflated/confused abortifacients with contraception in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby. Couples have been denied Plan B by pharmacist who claim a religious right to do so

Eradicating abortion access is "essentially a death sentence for many women and girls" who will be forced to bring their pregnancy to full term, says law professor
@MicheleBGoodwin
, who notes maternal morbidity for Black people is 3.5 times higher than their white counterparts.
The state that brought the nation Dobbs--now due to various missteps can't provide potable water to children and families in a community with a high poverty index.
The city of Jackson, MS is under a water emergency. No water for things like fires, bathing, toilet flushing, drinking, etc. Because the state of Mississippi has consistently failed its Jackson residents, that are majority Black, we need a federal response. This is unbelievable
The Supreme Court has voted to strike down Roe v. Wade, according to an initial draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito and obtained by POLITICO.
“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” Alito writes.

True, Ghislaine is the one person in jail, but she was also a cruel and active conspirator in the sexual abuse of girls. That she's a woman, does not give her a pass.
That said, she should not be the last of those brought to justice.
Ghislaine Maxwell breaks silence via an attorney on impending Epstein list release: "It’s all about men abusing women for a long period of time… and it’s only one person in jail—a woman."
