When we criticize treating children in the foster industrial complex as a “supply” for adoption, also remember that 20,000 of them “age out” each year without being returned to their families or adopted—many left without housing, income, diplomas, or family ties. (1/2)

In the US, “child protection” means taking children away from struggling families, not ensuring housing, food & health care or safety from violence. It is state violence against children. We need to radically reimagine a society safe for children & how to collectively create it.

I was going to tweet about what Honestie’s arrest at 11 & death from COVID at 14 say about structural racism & anti-Black state violence in America. But I’m too heartbroken that this precious child suffered so much brutality & sickness in her short life.

After my lecture criticizing race-based genetics, a white woman declared I was wrong because “Africans are the most homogeneous population in the world.” When I replied she was wrong—Africans are the most genetically diverse—she still insisted on “correcting” me. #BlackintheIvory

For 25 years, the Adoption & Safe Families Act has unjustly torn families apart by speeding up termination of parents’ rights & incentivizing adoption over family reunification. It can mean automatically severing incarcerated people’s bonds with their children. #RepealASFA

Formerly incarcerated people lose their rights as parents and argue that situation was made worse by a bill that was signed into law 25 years ago. @GeoffRBennett had this report.

I have come to believe the enslavement of African human beings laid the foundation for every modern U.S. atrocity: eugenic thinking & sterilization; control of women’s sexuality & wombs; policing; prison expansion; death penalty; foster care family separation; carceral society.

Cops drew guns on this couple & their newborn after USC Medical Center reported them to CPS. This is why #ReimagjneChildSafety calls for ending DCFS + LAPD partnership & my new book Torn Apart (Basic Books April 2022) calls for abolishing family policing.

Another one bites the dust. New calculator for successful vaginal birth after C-section (VBAC) eliminates race adjustment. There’s much more work needed to end racism in medicine, but abolishing race correction is imo an immediate & obvious step.

When I started at Harvard Law School in 1977, Tree was a third year student and president of BLSA. Thank goodness he was there. He set a tone for me and the other Black students (then & for generations to come) to be confident learners, lawyers & activists. Rest in love & power.

Plus nurses & doctors interpret mandatory reporting in racist ways. One study found doctors were 10X more likely to report Black moms than white moms for drug use while pregnant. Reporting happens in public hospitals. Do you think they’re calling CPS on wealthy private patients?

A doctor decapitated her baby during delivery after delaying a c-section and using extremely excessive force. We must end the reproductive violence against Black women that began during slavery and extended through mass sterilization & maternal mortality.

Here’s my contribution to the series of articles calling to repeal ASFA on its 25th anniversary. I focus on the racist mythology, rhetoric & politics that fueled it—and its continuing harm to Black children, families & communities. #RepealASFA

I’m thrilled that the mainstream media is finally reporting on the terror, trauma & rights violations inflicted by the child “welfare”/family policing system. Remember: we are not fighting to fix it; it needs to be abolished & replaced with reimagined safety & support. (1/2)

The misleading headline on the front page of @nytimes today might lead people to think sickle cell should be treated as a “Black disease.” But the second version tells the true story: people with sickle cell disease get worse treatment because they are Black.

The legacy of #slavery in #medicine . Myths about black people’s bodies that supported slavery, such as black people don’t feel pain and have weaker lungs (so need to be forced to work for whites to be healthy), still shape medical practice today.
