Nature now charges $12,290 US to publish a single article open access. Shall we list some things that cost less than that? I'll go first: a 2017 BMW 330i sedan, a 7-day cruise for a family of four, six Louis Vuitton purses. 🤪

As some others have already pointed out, these prices were there before open access; they were just baked into subscriptions. The second best thing OA did was to make these numbers evident to everyone, not just to the libraries footing the bill.

Here's a new one. An author wants their preprint removed because the journal is forcing them to pay (substantially) for OA as a condition of publication since the work is already public. 😑

Today we found a preprint in which the author lifted the entire paper from a conference proceeding, torturing each and every sentence to completely avoid plagiarism detection and literally duplicating the figures. The paper was submitted to a journal and sent to review. /1

Pretty audacious to not only do this and try to get it published but also post as a preprint. It has been rejected by the journal, so under normal circumstances, it would just quietly move on to another journal.

The recent conversations about research integrity largely miss what I think is the root cause for a lot of fraud: that a journal publication has become the most valuable currency in research. Preprints take the magic out of publishing and that is a very good thing for science.

I'm also leaving, with sincere gratitude, an organization that has been my home for nearly 11 years. I will miss my fellow Squares so much. @researchsquare , thank you for letting me be a part of your story and for such a rewarding and exciting decade. 💕 2/2
