Since classes are wrapped, I guess I’ll share that I’m headed to SUNY Binghamton in the fall. I’ll be a Visiting Assistant Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences and teach two interdisciplinary courses (Climate Justice and Authoritarianism) in their Source Project program.

That repression of peaceful protest tends to strengthen nonviolent campaigns is one of the most consistent findings in the scholarship on civil resistance. Maybe Shafik should have studied a real social science instead of economics.

Outrageous. Tens of thousands of us rely on the Orange Line every single day. Whole neighborhoods like JP & Roxbury depend on it to get us to work, get our kids to school, get customers to our businesses. Easier to say which neighborhoods *won't* be totally screwed by this.

Remember when Mayor Wu was a police reformer? Or pretended to be? Now she pumps up their budget and apparently does their PR too.

For most of us the barriers to “free inquiry” are material and institutional. The university has real hierarchies and these people are at the top. Framing the issue as one of cancel culture or incivility or whatever is out of touch and unserious

My piece on climate fiction ( @paolobacigalupi , @GhoshAmitav , and others) is live at @Env_Pol today! Get into it! If you don't have institutional access DM me for the hook-up ;)

Thanks for trying @DrJSchwedler . I think the dues-paying membership is owed some transparency about who voted, how they voted, and who drafted this statement. Somehow I doubt we get that from APSA.

@KathTX @joveest @CallaHummel I am on APSA Council and a number of us argued hard for honoring the strike, but lost. Also, the Council did not vote on the statement, it was issued after the meeting today. The statement does not reflect my views (it's so tone deaf). Sorry we failed

Excited bc I pitched @EmersonCollege a special topics poli sci course on Climate Justice and they're going to let me teach it next term! It's actually the first time I've been allowed to design my own class top-to-bottom on a topic I chose??

This is critical context. As a member of @HAWorkers , I would never cross a labor union to advance my career. And I hope all of the senior faculty crying about APSA's importance to grad students and NTT scholars are putting the same energy into supporting our union drives.

First screenshot is from the OUE guidance on teaching during COVID. Second screenshot is from the OUE guidance on teaching during the @hgsuuaw strike. That's right: you can't teach remotely to avoid COVID, but you can teach remotely to (virtually) cross a picket line.
