BREAKING: Harvard is evicting a Black
@hgsuuaw
student from campus housing today for serving as a student safety marshal during a recent campus protest organized by
@HarvardPSC
The HGSU graduate student worker is trained as a student marshal to ensure participant safety during campus protests. Both student marshals and protest participants are engaged in protected speech, under the US constitution and the University’s protocols.
For weeks, Palestinian, Black, and Muslim students at Harvard have been doxxed, harassed, and intimidated. Not only has the university failed to protect these students, but Harvard is actively punishing and evicting them.
Amulya, Lilia, and Margaret are some of
@hgsuuaw
very own. Amulya is our VP, Lilia is a long-time Feminist Working Group organizer, and Margaret is our sergeant-at-arms. All of them have amazed us with their courage, resiliency, and power. (1/n)
Yet, the university is now punishing the Black HGSU student who sought to protect the speech rights of our students. We are not aware of a Palestine-exception to constitutional and campus free speech, but we invite the University to state that explicitly if there is.
Marshals at the October 18th protest worked to ensure the safety of students in the midst of serious attempts at intimidating, attacking, and harming students lying on the ground in a vulnerable position.
An individual opposed to the protest aggressively began stepping over protestors, recording their faces, and even stepping on their heads. Concerned for safety, the marshals asked him to leave. When he refused, the marshals lifted their keffiyehs to block his recording.

🚨🚨🚨
He again refused to stop harassing protestors and repeatedly attempted to evade the marshals and crashed into them. The crowd and marshals used an established nonviolent, de-escalatory practice: public pressure.
They chanted the word ‘shame’ to deter the individual from harming vulnerable protestors and to block him from further recording. Footage of the event shows that the marshals acted with propriety in the interest of the protestors and all involved.
Harvard security officials were present and witnessed the whole event but did not intervene. Widely circulated footage has been contorted to suggest that the individual was harassed because of his identity.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The marshals sought to prevent him from putting more students at risk. At a time of heightened tensions and disinformation, it is our shared responsibility to avoid false accusations, regardless of our beliefs.
If you are a graduate student worker, become a member of HGSU today to help us leverage the power of organized labor to end the University’s attacks on pro-Palestine student speech and activism.
Since the protest, reactionary right-wing media has deployed racist and dehumanizing tropes to decontextualize and distort the actions of the protest marshals. The University has abdicated its duty to protect its students and caved to backlash and lies.

In a recent statement to the University, President Gay told us Harvard “embraces a commitment to free expression. That commitment extends even to views that many of us find objectionable, even outrageous. We do not punish or sanction people for expressing such views.”
I stand in solidarity with the student workers at Harvard. All workers deserve respect, dignity, a living wage, access to adequate health care, and protection against harassment and discrimination. I urge the administration to bargain in good faith for a fair contract.
When we go on strike tomorrow, Dec. 3, we don't just do so as a group of thousands of student workers standing together, who voted to strike with over 90% support.
We also go on strike with campus organizations, community groups, and our elected officials at our back! [THREAD]
Harvard is evicting a Black man, Elom Tetty-Tamaklo, for speaking out about Palestine. His crime? Protecting students from an instigator who tried to dox them. A senior university leader called Elom a “gang” member and pointed to his residence in Harvard Yard.
The university…
No agreement was reached in our final bargaining session today before our strike deadline.
WE GO ON STRIKE TOMORROW.
If you haven't reviewed our official strike notice, you can do so here:
Our local has voted by a membership-wide asynchronous vote to sign on to two letters regarding current events in Palestine. We will join the UAW rank-and-file call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) and United Electrical’s call for a ceasefire. Links in thread.
As of 6am Harvard campus is under our picket. We’re braving a storm on the first day of our strike and fighting for the contract we deserve. Will you join us?

Some of our members met (and danced) with
@BernieSanders
last week! We are taking that energy to the picket lines for as long as needed to win a fair contract. ✊✊✊
Last week I met with students from
@hgsuuaw
, and this morning they began their strike. I stand with them in demanding Harvard's administration to guarantee student workers a living wage, access to adequate health care, and protection against harassment and discrimination.
Good morning to everyone but the anti-union members of the
@Harvard
administration 👋🏾 2 more days to resolve what they'd rather call a "labor dispute" and agree to a fair contract. Who's ready to go on strike and win the contract we deserve?
The ICE notice on F-1 visas is incredibly concerning. But as it stands, this statement does not carry the force of law. We will right these deportations. Harvard students, DM us to join the International Scholars Working Group.
Our campaign for a living wage launched seven months ago. Though the University refused to work with us, today Harvard University GSAS has announced it will raise the minimum compensation package for all PhD programs to $50K.
It only took 10 days for more than 1,200 student workers to sign our petition demanding a fair raise.
We made sure Harvard heard us on Wednesday at our rally for a living wage.
@Harvard
- we'll be back.
Picket lines are all kinds of fun! Case in point: Our bargaining committee member
@JustinBloesch
and his partner
@bphuang12
got engaged yesterday and then went right back to marching to win a fair contract. Our hearts are full of joy! Congratulations both!
Harvard University found that anthropologist John Comaroff violated its sexual harassment policies. He’s teaching this term anyway. Accountability means more than a slap on the wrist. Come to our rally on September 6 at 3 PM in the Science Center Plaza and tell Harvard
Harvard University, which has a $41 billion endowment, admits that many students & student workers here are food insecure. But instead of agreeing to fair compensation in a union contract, they're offering discounted muffins. Shameful.

Contract or we strike 11/16
Today, after 8 months of bargaining, the Bargaining Committee (BC) unanimously reached a tentative agreement (TA) with the administration on a new contract. It will now go to membership for ratification beginning on Thursday.
In the last bargaining session before our strike deadline Harvard did not meet our demands for a living wage and real recourse. The strike is ON. See you on the picket line.

Today, our membership wide ratification vote concluded. Of a total of 1,917 votes, 1,353 (70.6%) voted in favor of ratification, while 564 votes (29.4%) voted to reject. As a result, the tentative agreement has been ratified and our new contract is now in effect.

voters authorized our bargaining committee to call a strike. With 386 members joining our ranks since the start of the vote, and 1860 voting yes, we are

This lawsuit is but one part of a multi-year fight these women have taken up with one of the most powerful institutions, and we stand behind them. No matter the outcome, may this further a convo about the responsibility of unis to their students and workers. (2/n)
🗣🗣🗣 PRESIDENT BACOW HEAR ME NOW I AM A FIRST YEAR I STAND WITH STUDENT WORKERS. THEIR WORKING CONDITIONS, OUR LEARNING CONDITIONS. NONE OF US WANT ABUSERS ON CAMPUS. FAIR CONTRACT NOW. 🗣🗣🗣
Thread: The Harvard administration is engaging in *regressive bargaining* with our union. Regressive bargaining, e.g. reversing your position on gains that have been agreed to in previous bargaining sessions, is a practice that is illegal under the National Labor Relations Act.
Why we need a union:
Aug: Harvard unilaterally gives some of us a 2.8% raise
Nov: HGSU ratifies contract w/ 5%
Jan 30: Paychecks cut top-ups to cancel out raises
Jan 31: We tell Harvard we'll organize to fight it
Feb 1: GSAS is “pleased to announce” the 5% after all.
The amount of work they have poured into this case and into our union is immense. Harvard may try to silence them, but we will lift them up, together. This institution will not break us. An injury to one is an injury to all. (3/n)
After nearly two years of negotiations and over five years of dedicated organizing, today we announce the historic victory of ratifying our first contract! Close to 2100 student workers cast a ballot, and 2026 voted to ratify (96.9%). Tomorrow, July 1st we work under a contract!
500+ student workers at Harvard have signed a letter committing to organizing a strike, because our contract expires on the 30th and we can't accept a contract without the protections we need. Today, our Bargaining Committee delivered that letter to the Harvard administration.
Good morning to everyone who has the integrity that this parent from Minnesota displayed during last week's

If you see them say a word of thanks, but don't stop there. Bringing accountability to those who harm us takes collective power & action. Watch this space 4 future actions & get involved. Harassment is all too common & we need folks to handle cases & fight back together (4/n)
THREAD: As Harvard prepares to shut down many of its operations, move classes online, and close many of the dorms in response to COVID-19, it must take steps to protect the health and financial security of students and workers across campus. (1/n)
Breaking: The government has agreed to rescind DHS and ICE rules barring international students attending online universities from staying in the U.S., per a hearing this afternoon in Harvard and MIT's lawsuit against the agencies.
As the administration calls on Harvard faculty members to report striking workers to dock their pay, it's important to note that professors here and elsewhere have condemned this intimidation and expressed support for the strike. This is what solidarity looks like!

This week, Harvard refused our demand to reopen bargaining over wages. Yet its own internal committee determined that our graduate programs are losing their competitive edge on the order of $5000 - $15000 compared to peer institutions.

Last week, our bargaining committee (BC) announced a strike authorization vote (SAV) starting Monday, September 13th. An SAV is a membership-wide vote on whether to authorize a strike, one of our most powerful tools as a labor union.
** OUR STRIKE AUTHORIZATION VOTE WILL BEGIN ON OCTOBER 15. **
Our elected bargaining committee has recommended voting in favor of strike authorization.
A year after bargaining began, Harvard's administration has refused to budge on the issues most important to our members.
