It's a scandal that Austria wants to veto Schengen accession for Romania, Bulgaria & Croatia. On its own, it stinks of Russian influence - Vienna is known to be a Russian oblast with money laundering and oligarchs running things, and local intelligence services captured by Putin.
Tend to agree. Denmark cracked right down on illegal migration and abuse of welfare system without leaving the EU/ ECHR - other countries deport lots in same conditions... meanwhile UK treats violent criminality as a factor *against* deportation - the problems are at home...
Having read up about the Jack Monroe (
@BootstrapCook
) saga in recent days I have one question: did any of the journalists and big TV producers who validated Jack Monroe over the years do any due diligence such as ask Jack Monroe for a bank statement or tax returns?

This is now the border of Romania and Moldova but by the time my daughter grows up, it will be just another pretty river in the EU, after the Russian army are driven out of Ukraine and Moldova, God willing.
The Kherson liberation is ofc huge for Ukraine but this win is also a victory for Moldova - ain't no way in hell Russia is now able to reach Moldova and Transnistria is all but lost to Putin. The pressure on Tiraspol from Kyiv and Chisinau now will be enormous. High time!

The Guardian newspaper revealed yesterday that prosecutors were investigating whether a donation from Paxum to a firm owned by ex-President Donald Trump is of suspicious provenance.
Boycott works, ignore those who say otherwise. A few years ago Russian company Yango entered Romania's market with better services than Uber. Half priced. Nobody used them, we really don't like Russians. They accepted the losses and pulled out.
#boycottaustria
The donator, shown in a public filing, is also a co-owner of porn payments firm Paxum, which has been embroiled for almost a year in a massive fraud scandal in Romania, as revealed last year by our website:
Feature not bug- landed gentry, rentier class exploiting productive society- same for rest of economy- take childcare- almost impossible to open a nursery in area where it's needed due to council commissars refusing change of use for buildings- vested interests choking UK future.
Interesting - obstructive and unpredictable English planning/consent regime is why high speed rail in Britain costs £200m per kilometre vs £25-32m per kilometre in the rest of Europe
@BootstrapCook
@TheSavvyfox
to the extent you are asking donors for money for yourself due to acute money shortages it makes sense for journalists who give you the opportunity to pass your message to millions of people to verify your claim - don't see any harm in that at all

Fair enough, but my question was, did any of the journalists who quoted you, published you and had you on TV ever ask for tax returns or bank statements from you?
At the City and Financial trade conference, I just asked Chris Watts, deputy director at the UK Office for Financial Sanctions Implementation, about the infamous decision to grant sanctioned murderous warlord Yevgeny Prigozhin a waiver to spuriously sue

The donor, Anton Postolnikov, was contacted for comment through Paydek, a London-based company he also runs, but gave no reply. Neither did representatives of Ron DeSantis. There is no suggestion that Postolnikov has broken any laws. The donation to Ron DeSantis is public record.

I mean, I've flown a fair few times but I couldn't land a plane.
But this could equally be an example of the infamous "slipstreaming" whereby one country puts its head above the parapet against a policy with others (the Netherlands, possibly Sweden) quietly backing the veto while pretending not to. Cynical.
@mateirosca
I am a bit taken aback at the amount of abuse you have been subjected to for asking a simple question. I mean, this is Twitter, ok, but come on. As far as I understand, the job of a good journalist is exactly that: questioning.
A shock ruling from the ECHR this week has determined that being protected from climate change by your government is a human right. "The court effectively concluded that humans have a right to safety from climate catastrophes — a move which immediately established a potent

I am curious what you think the reason is for this. I am not an expert but does it have something to do with strong family ties? People not allowing vulnerable family members to be homeless?
more on the role of Austrian officials in getting Germany's No1 fugitive and likely Russian spy Jan Marsalek (Wirecard case) into Russia before authorities in Berlin could question him about global fraud & money laundering, links to the Wagner group etc
Watts said no comment on individual cases but the OFSI has to "weigh the rights of individuals to have representation."
He added OFSI wouldn't want to "usurp the role of the court" ie decide if Prigozhin is a murderous crook (didn't the sanctions take care of that?).
Unrepentant.
NIMBY dog whistle - this will be the undoing of the Conservatives as a party of government - how long can you win elections on a platform of "vote for us and we'll keep choking off economic growth"? Sunak surely knows better which makes this even worse.
Green belt land is extremely precious in the UK.
We’ve seen too many examples of local councils circumventing the views of residents by taking land out of the green belt for development, but I will put a stop to it.

So as the data begins to come through markets are increasingly looking at a building consensus that the budget will not only save the UK from recession in H2 2022, but also lead to c2% GDP growth in each of 2023 and 2024 at a time when Germany and EU will be in a deep recession.
Watts also confirmed that for all the talk among UK government types about transparency there isn't and won't be a public register of licenses to violate sanctions granted by the OFSI to various service companies.

I keep thinking about this. It’s like a friend and mentor of mine who worked at Reuters for about 20 years said: writing is a job of work, something you do with your hands.
Writing is for everyone. There are no elite scenes that get to define who is a writer. Everyone dreams of writing a book. It comes starter pack in humanity because it needs that many bodies-- I mean, dreamers. Vomit up that novel. Bang it out. Try not to die. Live más.
Stephen was a great journalist, boss and man. He gave me a shot despite my lack of formal education and he always emphasised scepticism, having fun and chasing fact over narrative. Great company, sense of humour, intellect. A huge loss. I was lucky and proud to work for him. RIP

Commuting to Central London is making millions of people miserable, especially those who live on the outskirts and use National Rail. It hurts family life and mental health. If our betters want us to go back to the office for Pret's sake, why not fix trains and housing?
It has always been a dream of mine to have a story in the New York Times and today I get to live a bit of that dream vicariously because their Eastern Europe bureau chief Andrew Higgins this week wrote damn close to the same article about Andrew Tate that I did back in February.
Whatever else happens to this country. And I hope it doesn’t. I came here for the English language, the press, Radio 3 and Radio 6, London, Asian food, books and the unintrusive friendliness of English people. Thank God, all of these are going strong. So I ain’t going anywhere…
