The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Nadhim Zahawi, has been sending threatening letters to people investigating his tax affairs. The letters are designed to intimidate & say they're confidential and can't be published. One was sent to me. I am publishing it.

Quick note to people reporting on Zahawi. If he did fail to pay £3.7m capital gains tax, that likely means he failed to report receiving ***£27m***. He presumably claimed this was merely “careless” (and so not tax fraud). How plausible is that?

The Post Office's compensation scheme is designed to minimise payouts. One postmaster received £15.75. That isn't a typo. I count nine ways the Post Office's HSS compensation scheme is rigged:

New development. Guardian reporting Zahawi paid the tax plus interest, plus a 30% penalty - over £5m. 30% is at the lower end of what I'd expect. But the obvious point: people whose taxes are "fully up to date" don't pay 30% penalties to HMRC.

The Post Office's top priority is covering-up its mistakes. Thread on what happened when we identified that the Post Office's compensation payments to thousands of postmasters were a tax disaster.

Zahawi is conspicuously not denying that the “seven figure” tax payment was to settle a dispute with HMRC over his YouGov tax avoidance. But how did he negotiate and finalise a settlement with HMRC in six months? It usually takes years.

This is the UK's marginal tax rate on someone with three kids. You can earn £50k and pay a marginal rate of 68%. It's disgrace. But it's made even worse by the way a large chunk of this tax is collected - the "high income child benefit charge" (HICBC). Thread:

Companies House, the CPS and the police have a choice. Prosecute Barrowman and his team for a breach that was both blatant and impactful. Or get ready for absolutely everyone to ignore these rules. Because rules that are never enforced may as well not exist.

The Guardian reports that two companies, PPE Medpro and LFI Diagnostics are ultimately controlled by Douglas Barrowman (Michelle Mone's husband). But neither company lists Barrowman as a "person with significant control". If the Guardian is correct, Barrowman broke the law.

Quite a few people tagging/DMing me this kind of thing, about @Jacob_Rees_Mogg . It's nonsense. JRM did not avoid £103m of corporation tax or indeed, so far as I can see, any tax.

What's fair compensation for all the distress and suffering of a postmaster falsely accused of stealing, losing their livelihood, and waiting years to for their name to be cleared? If your answer is £5,000 then you probably work for the Post Office.

I'm not a criminal lawyer. I'm not familiar with criminal appeal procedures work. My position is simply that 700 postmasters cannot be expected to wait ten more years for their convictions to be referred, one by one, to appeal courts.

This may be the most important chart in UK tax policy. It suggests the UK's VAT registration threshold is holding back the growth of 26,000 companies. 🧵:
