Every member of the press has told me that they have to prioritise AAA games over indie games at times like this. Be strategic. If you want reviews (and many of you do), do not launch the same day as a game like TotK.
Everyone ready for that new Legend of Zelda game? I bet your PR team told you today would be a bad day to launch a game or do a big announcement. Hot take: it doesn't matter if you launch the same day as a AAA game. Here is why 🧵
Officially cancelled my GDC talk.
Feels really bad but I just can't justify an expensive trip to San Francisco while trying to find a job and break into freelance.
FF7R is a weird example to point to on this since Square actually HAS been doing this, people just haven't been buying/playing these games when they've EXPLICITLY made leaner experiments and games
Just a friendly reminder that Chicory: A Colorful Tale currently holds the third-highest Metacritic rating for a game newly released this year, and the highest for an indie project.
These sorts of fees aren't abnormal or at all unique to the Summer Game Fest.
This is why people do their own shows now, and why E3 died.
It's unsustainable, and exclusionary.
"running a trailer during Summer Game Fest’s main show this year cost $250,000 for one minute, $350,000 for one and a half minutes, $450,000 for two minutes, and $550,000 for two and a half minutes."
same pricing tiers as last year's Game Awards
Today was my last day at Thunderful and I'm now looking for my next new role!
Will be taking a little break before really diving into the job hunt, but if you need me for anything, I'm here!
Some AI scraping news website is scraping the WoW subreddit, meaning the subreddit is just upvoting the most nonsense to see if they publish it, AND THEY ARE.
Some news! Today is my last day
@icopartners
! I'm taking about a week to rest before moving on to my next thing, which you'll hear about soon, but for now, I wanted to thank
@icotom
,
@icodiane
and
@kroniksan
for taking a chance on me when they hired me at the end of 2018.
ICYMI yesterday I'm now a PR and Influencer Manager over at
@Thunderfulgames
!
Email is in my bio, and I'll be reaching out to people for things very shortly
Review embargo for SteamWorld Build dropped today!
That's my first ever full release at Thunderful and my first PR release outside of an agency! Currently sitting at an 83 on Metacritic which is hugely exciting.
Press, let me know if you want to check it out!
Thunderful's restructure, which is expected to see 20% of its workforce laid off, aims to "address past overinvestments" and reduce annual costs by up to $10.7 million
(friendly reminder that there are a ton of cool independent sites out there doing the work that don’t have the pull of legacy media folks with established careers/followings to be part of conversations)
Putting this out there, but if any press are looking to make the jump into consultancy, mock reviewing, etc, please always feel free to reach out if you want help figuring out industry standard rates, turnaround times, what companies can ask of you, etc.
For my 30th birthday (today!), I'm sharing a reminder that I am immediately available for freelance and contract video games PR work starting Feb 19th!
Today was my last day at Thunderful and I'm now looking for my next new role!

Hello everyone! When I left my previous role, I lost my database of mock reviewers, which is very sad!
If you do mock reviews, or want to get into doing them, please fill out this list!
@xpatriciah
@Maajora
I genuinely don't understand this. A healthy games press is what's good for us advertisers. Not a muted toothless webpage that has no core audience.
Today, after working on D&D and Magic: The Gathering for nearly three years, I get to see my name in a Forgotten Realms project for the first time. It's an incredible feeling, and I'm so happy I got to touch Baldur's Gate 3, even slightly.
Incredibly proud of the work the Thunderful team has done in launching Viewfinder today, and want to give a massive shout-out to
@disobey
and
@icopartners
who have put together incredible content creator campaigns in a very short space of time.
THE TIME IS NOW!
@PlayViewfinder

CW: Weight loss
Just weighed myself and it looks like I'm under 100kg for the first time since my wedding was cancelled in April 2020.
99.2kg this morning!
Feels good.
Genuinely upset about how many people I'm going to lose contact with if we lose Twitter. This place sucks, but the people I know here definitely don't.
If you attended the Golden Joysticks and disagree with Meghna being de-platformed, they just sent out a feedback form.
I responded with how I was disappointed by this, and I encourage others to do hat too.
Also the fact that
@GoldenJoysticks
replaced one of the few prominent women of color speaking up in this industry with a white dude to present an award on STORYTELLING is a whole other level of shenanery. Believe me, that didn’t go unnoticed either.
I'll be at
@Official_GDC
in 2024 it seems, talking about how you can apply community management tactics to PR, and how the best in the business are already doing it!
See you there?
Sincere thank you to everyone that shared this, both here and on LinkedIn. I'm still figuring out what next steps look like, but I've got some leads and I'm feeling motivated.
Have to figure out freelance rates, and then if I do make it to GDC on top of all this, now!
Today was my last day at Thunderful and I'm now looking for my next new role!

This is very important reporting by
@patrickklepek
- guides writers are the backbone of the games journalist industry, and deserve better pay, more respect, and less crunch.
My GDC talk is now live in the GDC Vault!
Learn why capturing niche audiences that play your game is key to reaching new people, and what leaders in the community management space have done to do so!
Seeing PRs still working with proponents of harassment while promoting their games. We can do our jobs ethically, by working with positive influencers and press, and doing actual damage by platforming bad folks is not on, IMO.
managing editor Brendan Sinclair has been laid off.
It sounds like even more cuts might be happening across the Gamer Network of sites (Eurogamer, RPS, VG247 and others).
This is absolutely devastating news. Brendan's weekly columns are irreplaceable
In an attempt to force myself to be more confident in my body as I work out, I ended up buying some tank tops. Showing the world not to brag, but to force myself to be confident.
I've responded a couple of times in this thread, but really it just all boils down to:
Treat press like people, know what they like, know what they need. Treat the relationship as symbiotic. You need each other.
Headed out from GDC this morning, and had a wonderful time!
To everyone I saw again after a while, good to see you!
To everyone I met for the first time, great to meet you!
And to everyone I missed, let's catch up after the event!
Have a happy selfie from my first day!
Not to be a bleeding heart, but please be kind to PR folks while waiting for keys. They know just as much that it's a bad position to be in, and are on your side and most likely fighting for you. It's (usually) not their fault when this sort of thing happens.
Cool to have worked on this, very happy to see it win a BAFTA! That's my fourth BAFTA winning title, if I'm keeping count correctly.
Shame everyone that worked on marketing this at TF was laid off this year.
Venba
I'm not the right person to speak about Venba, but what I will say, as a second generation immigrant, is that it makes me really wish I had spent more time learning from and listening to my great-grandma about Greek cuisine. It makes me miss her.
