I’m genuinely saddened that this attitude is so pervasive these days. This push for longer games is bloating games and budgets alike. People still hold games like Silent Hill 2, Onimusha or Metal Gear Solid in high regard…guess how long those are?
9 months of nasty DMs, videos made about us being Xbox shills, just constant harassment. Now, after yesterday, the Xbox fans are doing the same thing. Now suddenly it’s reversed. Lesson? Fanboys are terrible. I appreciate all consoles unlike these people.
This is truly amazing. Playing Link's Awakening at 1:1 pixel scale with 120 fps scrolling - you can zoom the map alllll the way out and the entire world is active.
You cannot play Diablo 2 resurrected after 30 days of being offline, one of the first console games to feature check in drm.
It serves no real purpose and can be removed with hacks.

Some random snippets but Alan Wake 2 is one of the most technically astounding and visually beautiful games I've ever played. The game is great too, thankfully!
I gotta say, while I can see it not working for everyone, Elden Ring truly is, I believe, my single favorite “open world video game”. I don’t think any open world game has ever managed to capture my attention quite like this. Absolutely phenomenal stuff.
Sometimes comments are so ridiculous that it actually kinda cheers me up. The sheer absurdity is truly next-level. "Yeah, just port that bad boy over to Unreal Engine 5 and make it boring - bam, fixed".
RoboCop is beautifully ugly if that makes sense. It perfectly depicts places you would never want to actually visit. It's the first UE5 game I've played which consistently impressed me with its scenery, though.
Why do people use the word 'cancel' to describe situations in which such a thing did not occur? He said something people disagreed with (I too thought it was dumb) and people discussed it. I've dealt with that stuff too when I said dumb stuff. That's not being 'cancelled'.
The craziest thing about PS5 is the speed of the SSD. 5.5 GB/s is just part of the story - there is a lot of custom silicon in there to ensure that the system isn't bottlenecked in other areas. It's *REALLY* fast on paper - a lot faster than Xbox Series X even.
Anyone notice how EA has been quietly releasing good to great games again over the past few years? They recovered from the MTX era and have been publishing mostly great stuff.
This update is genuinely mind blowing. It is, in many ways, the most technically impressive game you can play right now. Path-tracing is the future...but we're still in the earliest of days.
Cyberpunk 2077's RT Overdrive technology preview launches tomorrow, bringing path-traced visuals to a modern triple-A game for the first time. Here's an early preview on what the upgrade delivers, courtesy of

I can’t imagine what you want here. An explosion of nonsense menus like Call of Duty MW2?! This is a gorgeous and clean design. It would only be better if they removed that info box in the top right corner.
Looking back at Ryse: Son of Rome, it's wild to consider that THIS was a launch game for Xbox One...10 years ago. Released today on the latest Xbox, it wouldn't look out of place...
Our first look at Ratchet on PC! It has a few issues but it's overall in good shape! Infinitely better than TLOUP1 and Jedi Survivor at launch. The funniest bit is when Rich tried running the game off an actual PS4 hard drive on a machine just above min spec!
The PC port we've been waiting for! Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart arrived too late for the full deep dive treatment, but while we work on that, check out a three-way Let's Play: PC Max vs PS5 Performance RT vs PC Very Low on min-spec hardware -
Thanks to the combined power of the PixelFX PS2 GEM and the RetroTINK 4K (to reach 2160p output) - it's possible to achieve crystal clear, digital true 480p output from a game like Metal Gear Solid 2. No noise, artefacts or issues. Truly exceptional.
The visual quality seen in Assassin's Creed Unity remains impressive to this very day. Still the best looking game in the series, I feel (and better than the last three games in many ways - at least, I think so).
Visiting a family friend - my son and their kids sit down to play Switch games. Their TV is an older 1080p Samsung - motion smoothing: on. My son immediately says “Dad, can you fix it? It’s too laggy”. That’s my boy 😅
Thanks for all the support over the last couple days. I’m going to try a new approach - no more responding to negative comments. Won’t be easy but it’s time to push them aside and focus on the good.
The best quote one might see today. When a studio decides to release a live service game, very rarely do they return to creating non-live service products, it feels. So I'm happy to see they've made the choice to stick with what they know...even if I'm sure it cost them a lot.
This is a shame. The game deserves far better and I hope people are willing to give it a chance at some point. I've taken issue with many of Ubi's past design practices and this feels like an answer to those critique. A game built first with creativity and fun in mind.
The fact that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown reportedly only sold 300K copies is a real shame.
It's easily the best thing Ubisoft have put out in years.
Imagine thinking $60 is too much for a new 2D Metroid. ‘Modern Gamers’, man…I’m way out of touch with what’s ‘popular’ I guess. I’d take this over any other big AAA open world thing that’ll be released this year, that’s for sure.
Yes. Love all of these effects but, as with any tool, they require careful, tasteful use. Many folks just remember the games that got it wrong but, when it's done well, it just blends into the presentation creating something truly beautiful.
Not this again. I get it - resources are tight for many of us but assigning value to length (of a single play-through) above all else really bothers me. I’m sure many will disagree but I feel this thought process has worsened gaming in the AAA space especially.
So Helldivers 2 reminded me of something - if you have loading sequences in your game, making those sequences awesome is super important. HD2 does this by showing your pods launching backed by an amazing theme before seamlessly transitioning to the planet.
The new consoles are finally launching this week and I think, no matter your preference, we should congratulate everyone that helped bring them to market under such challenging circumstances this week. All the new boxes are extremely well made and there are great games on the way
The duality of tweets. On one hand, I've never posited that 30 fps is unplayable and can even tolerate less (though I prefer more) so I agree there.
On the other hand, to suggest that you can't tell the difference is an insane remark and wholly untrue for normal humans.
The 30fps is "unplayable" narrative is one of the worst trends to ever happen in gaming. This asinine PC lames rhetoric has you passing on great game experiences
Yet 95% of you can't tell the difference between 30fps & 60fps unless you're told beforehand
30fps plays fine
Sometimes you play a game that is so good, so perfectly crafted that you can feel the emotions welling up inside as you play. Those are the moments that remind you why the medium of video games is so special.
If anyone at Bethesda is watching, please ensure that DLSS and XeSS are supported. Don’t make this another one of those AMD games with lacking features.
I always think back to the MGS2 tanker and its high level of granular detail. Rather than modern games aiming for larger worlds, I'd like to see someone tackle smaller but insanely detailed environments packed to the brim with interactive elements and granular destruction.
The Spider-Man 2 demonstration looked pretty good, right? I'm seeing some weird comments suggesting that it looks terrible and I'm confused as to where that's coming from. It's more detailed, improved ray tracing, larger setpieces. Ratchet is more striking still but it looks nice
Biggest surprise of the launch has to be Sackboy. It’s a gorgeous, super smooth 60fps platformer. A perfect launch game. Just pure joy and so beautiful - shockingly so.
Disagree. I didn't really enjoy the avoidance missions in the first game, so it could apply there, but in Spider-Man 2, they're excellent. You actually have a weapon that can eliminate foes. It reminds me how much I miss third-person stealth action games.
So this kinda bums me out. There’s so many people making incredible productions on YouTube yet this category is always reserved for streamers. Feels like it should be ‘streamer of the year’ then cuz they never seem to consider anyone else.
Seen this video and comment on Reddit but I 100% agree.

"I can seriously say it's one of the few times the characters truly look ALIVE"
I still am not over this. Roll7 made quality games. Players loved them, they won awards, they sold well and were actually profitable. They did everything right. Take 2 is making money too - there is no reason for this aside from pure greed.
An interesting thing to consider - for the first time since the launch of PlayStation 2, nearly every launch game for both new machines runs at 60fps or has a 60fps mode (some 120hz). Only stuff like Watch Dogs stands out as an obvious exception. This is news worth celebrating.
An interesting thing I keep seeing regarding Starfield are people wishing they'd switch to Unreal Engine...but I feel like these folks have somehow missed the state of Unreal games lately. Can you imagine what a UE4 based Starfield would have been? I only see issues...
While it's used as a gag in the video, this sandwich pirate concept highlights on reason why 60 fps would be tough to achieve. Like prior BGS titles, it seems that Starfield tracks the location and position of arbitrary items in the world. Given the scope...
Can’t talk PS5 heat/noise yet but I will say that the Series X is way more quiet than the One X (even though One X isn’t that loud). It’s basically silent.
Kinda shocking to me that wanting to own a game on a disc is somehow controversial to some folks but here we are. Many publishers on all platforms are guilty of this and asking for change means we actually care. Options are good.
First big console launch in the modern social media era and one of the weirdest things I’m seeing are Xbox or PS fans gleefully sharing glitches, crashes and hardware issues occurring with the platform they dislike. Seems like both have their fair share of issues but still...
So I guess I can confirm what I’m working on right now (and why I can’t cover Metroid or anything else at the moment). It’s PSVR2 and I’m working on multiple videos for it!
Ya know, looking back, the Demon’s Souls remake from 2020 still looks and runs better than a lot of new games just arriving. It’s the Ryse/KZ Shadow Fall of its era, I guess.
George R.R. Martin says social media is dominated by 'anti-fans'
"Toxicity is growing. It used to be fun talking about our favorite books and films, and having spirited debates with fans who saw things different… but ... it is no longer enough to say “I did not like [this]…
I must admit, Jason's story here is very disappointing. The killing of Japan Studio, moving away from smaller games and focusing only on very select 'blockbusters'. This is a slap to the face for longtime PlayStation fans. I really hope it's not this dire...
NEW: In 2018, a small team of PlayStation developers tried to build their own studio to remake The Last of Us. Today, the game still exists but the studio doesn't. As we enter the PS5 era, Sony is avoiding risk and prioritizing its biggest teams. My story:
Starfield will run 4K/30fps on Xbox Series X & 1440p/30fps on Xbox Series S
"We do lock it at 30, because we want that fidelity, we want all that stuff. We don't want to sacrifice any of it."
If you’re playing Assassin’s Creed on Series X this is a fantastic demonstration of why VRR matters. Without it, there’s plenty of screen tearing and dips but if your TV supports VRR + 120hz, it basically looks flawless to the eye. This will become important this gen.
I feel for the developers building launch titles for next-gen - there's an unusually high amount of negativity flying around. Hitting launch is extremely difficult. This season, be kind to those building the games you might play - even if they aren't necessarily to your taste.
This is extremely disappointing. It was this broad spectrum of games created around the world that defined the first two PlayStation consoles. The shift towards mainstream Western developed gaming exclusively is 👎
Oh, it's worth putting to bed the HDMI nonsense from earlier this week. The PS5 HDMI cable is 2.1 compliant and supports 4K120 HDR. I've tested this cable on Xbox Series X and a 3090 GPU and it works as intended on all three. So, yeah, no problems there.
This whole situation is so bizarre to me as the new consoles are fantastic. We have so many 60fps (or higher games), they're mostly beautiful and polished. Folks should be super happy right now.
TIL - a not insignificant number of people thought we used the built in recording functions on consoles. That tells me I should do a video or stream covering our workflow at some point to explain what we’re doing! Who’d like to see something like that?
Is anyone actually...really enjoying Assassin’s Creed this year? I dropped off after 8 hours. Now just playing Demon’s Souls and Yakuza 7 and enjoying them a lot more.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2: the Digital Foundry tech review.
@dark1x
talks game and engine upgrades vs prior titles, ray tracing enhancements and pushing the PS5 SSD even harder:
The discourse today has been interesting, to say the least. 😅 I think we’ll need to help folks understand that games can become bottlenecked for a multitude of reasons unrelated to resolution.
Stopped by Media Markt for the first time since the new consoles launched. Not a single Series X or PS5 to be found but they did have a lot of Series S units with multiple aisles like this. Above that? Boxed PC games!
Working on a Demon’s Souls vid comparing the game with the original - I love doing these types of comparisons the most just to see how things have changed. Using an old phat PS3, though, and it is LOUD.
