Despite what we had already seen before release I was willing to give Far Cry 6 the benefit of the doubt. unfortunately, except for a few rare moments, all it did was paint a not-so-hopeful picture of how AAA studios decide to portray Latin America, even after all these years
I'm thrilled to be back at Polygon talking about Hitman 3's portrayal of Mendoza, what it meant to see my country in a fair light for the first time, and how the industry needs to start recognizing English's hegemony over itself.

i'm parting ways with my contractor position at Fanbyte in solidarity with my friends and colleagues that were laid off, and out of respect for a site i loved that no longer exists

For

, I spoke with Dennaton, Suda51, Devolver, and the teams behind Ape Out, Broforce, Ghostrunner, and Mother Russia Bleeds about the legacy of Hotline Miami these past 10 years - across their games, their careers, and indie games as a whole.
For
@gameinformer
, I spoke with Shinji Mikami, Sam Barlow, and the teams behind Fatal Frame, Darkest Dungeon, and the Dead Space remake about how chainsaws, ghosts, and BDSM influenced the horror games you love. I also asked them what they're scared of.
Starting today you'll see my name over
@FanbyteMedia
more often: I'm joining as featured contributor helping the guides team and beyond!
I couldn't be more grateful and excited for the opportunity to work with such talented and insightful folks.
Let's do some hero shit.
Unpaid internships and contract work remain ever present in the industry, as studios recruit students and people eager to get their foot in the door offering shameful practices in return. And video games have started to reflect this. My report for WaPo:

Very excited for this opportunity to write exclusively in a new CMS.
Throughout the past few weeks, I've been fortunate to contribute to

Harness forbidden power and create your own destiny in Shin Megami Tensei V, available November 12, 2021.
Okay so, announcement time: I've just sent out my resignation latter. Starting March 1st I'll be freelancing full time.
This is probably the scariest thing I've done in quite a while, but I'm confident, and I couldn't ask for better coworkers to join me in this new path.
humble brag but this is the first console generation where I have one of each (and my first ever Xbox, too) - and I bought them all myself! doing a job I love!
freelancing has been tough and unexpected in many ways, but it’s good to see my achievements materialized
it doesn't matter if you hire unmatched talent, the herbs at the top will always fuck things up and put the blame elsewhere while they leave with their pockets full
In a bizarre studio closure and layoff message to staff, Possibility Space owner Jeff Strain blamed the studio closure on employees leaking information to the press.
disappointing is seeing the co-founder of a site I've always admired, and one which I fought hard until I could see my name on it, making a public tweet getting mad at the folks keeping it afloat after almost two years under a pandemic and SEO-based landscape that none of us want
A bit over a year ago, I decided to start freelancing. To try my luck into international outlets.
I've had so many great opportunities and met some of the finest journalists and writers out there who inspire me everyday. And today...
Here's my first story for Kotaku.
Across the Spider-Verse is as inventive as the first film, but its heavy-handed movie tie-ins in the light of an upcoming live-action treatment showcase a future loss of the hero's essence. For
@Polygon
, I argue that the MCU doesn't deserve Miles Morales.
Starting August I'll have my own column! I never expected something like this so early in my career, but I'm so, so excited for everyone to read it.
The Unwinnable folks are incredibly rad and I couldn't be more honored. Stay tuned!
(friendly reminder that there are a ton of cool independent sites out there doing the work that don’t have the pull of legacy media folks with established careers/followings to be part of conversations)
Argentina's economic instability, high ARS to USD conversion, and obstacles for importation have always set piracy as the default entry method for games. And while there's been attempts to move on from it, our current landscape facing the next-gen is pushing them back. My report:
Argentina is one of many countries with a games market built on piracy by necessity -- but the same sky-high prices and new anti-piracy methods are freezing gamers out of the new generation
it sucks to see a new-ish freelancer excited about their first big byline, who's been working hard on the draft addressing rounds of edits, only to find out that the site can't pay them - the worst part? they had known this for months, but never bothered to notify them until now
I'm thrilled to announce I'll be helping the news team over
@thegamerwebsite
on a freelance basis, and you can already read me gushing about Shin Megami Tensei games over at the site:
The fact that reviewers will not only have to suffer harassment from gamers and fans alike over the slight disagreement to their "10/10" mindset but also put up with peers sniping and subtweeting them simultaneously is already exhausting, and I wish things were different
in argentina, purchasing an AAA game can match a month's rent. game pass presents a more affordable, yet flawed alternative. for
@verge
, i spoke to over 40 people about how this is changing the way folks think and engage with games, ownership, and piracy.
Flores, the latest operator of Rainbow Six Siege, was born and lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina throughout most of his life. Yet, his accent couldn't be less accurate, and his background story with the military is careless. I wrote about it for PC Gamer:
Something that caught my attention during my time with Far Cry 6 is how close it gets to a portrayal we aren't used to: Latin American locations where the local language is prioritized over English. And I wish they'd have taken the plunge. For

Hey! I've been working on this for a couple months. It's the story behind Soapbox Race World, a project started in 2015 after EA shut down the servers of Need for Speed World.
Now, it's a fully functioning open source version with multiple servers, and no longer pay-to-win.
i'm working on a potential story for GameSpot regarding the union pins situation with TGA's security last night and would love to chat to folks who attended. email is diego6arguello6 @ gmail, happy to share my Signal over DM and can grant anonymity if needed. thanks!

persona 3 reload is yet the latest example of how much persona 5 is permeating the series. not only is fatigue starting to set in, but in the case of persona 3, its essence is set aside in the process. here's my review (and 100th article!) for polygon
The Resident Evil 4 remake is filled with embellishments around its Spanish. But the constant inconsistency in captions means that only a few will understand its details - ironically mirroring the problem that non-native English speakers often face.
i've seen the bright and thoughtful writers of my generation leave to PR or game dev day after day because they got tired of weeks-long harassment over a $150 op ed and dozens of weekends lost to hit embargoes and people shrug off bad salaries because "it's always been like this"
33,000 thousand words later, my 13 guides on Lost Judgment are all up

's best of 2021 I had the chance to gush about Everhood, one of the most interesting games I've played in years. If you're even remotely interested in rhythm games and/or Undertale, you shouldn't miss this
Diego, a giant tortoise whose unstoppable libido was credited with saving his species, has finally retired to an uninhabited island off the coast of Ecuador after decades of service in a breeding program.
For my
@Slate
debut, I dived into the history of community efforts to preserve the twists and secrets of Undertale and Deltarune, from Toby Fox's 24-hour silence mandate to my own experience playing Undertale in 2019 knowing pretty much nothing about it.
For
@verge
, I spoke with
@johnjohanas
about the making of Hi-Fi Rush - the influences that Guitar Hero Live and his high school band that played Radiohead covers had on it, to a Dune reference that didn't make the cut and the dreams of being a rockstar.
if I could travel back in time and talk to my 10 year old self I’d say that the next 14 years are gonna be tough, but one day you’ll wake up with red hair, covering games for a living, and you’ll finally have the means to get that Rock Band kit you always wanted.
missed the exact date for a few days, but it's been 2 years since i left my day job to work in games media full time
back in 2016 i wondered if a 19 year old in argentina could get noticed by international outlets. it wasn't easy, but i'm extremely happy and fortunate to be here
we got 40 writers from around the world to tell us about the games they played in 2021. the variety in writing styles, format, and what they chose to highlight is exactly what I’ve always wanted to see on Spine, and I’m so glad to continue meeting new talent every year
Last year, we invited 20 writers to talk about their games of the year.
This time, we have extended the invitation to 40 writers, ranging from past contributors to a few special guests, including a recommended read from each one of them.
Gotham Knights doesn't believe in its characters to let them carry the torch, which end up overshadowed by past conventions, a messy open world, and ultimately, Batman himself. My review (and debut!) over

For my
@inversedotcom
debut, I spoke with IO Interactive about the choice of having Mendoza as one of the locations in Hitman 3, their research, and 47's knowledge about wine.
the thing that hurts the most about this clown destroying twitter in real time is realizing how much of my career spiraled from this site. twitter has been, plain and simple, the place that actually allowed me to carve my path in games media internationally
I'm back at
@EGMNOW
talking about the concept of Unsafe Rooms, looking at how Death Stranding, Resident Evil 2 Remake, and Silent Hill 4 subvert the promise of a secure place in order to create hostile and terrifying environments.
Delighted to finally share this! I've spent the last couple of months talking to folks from the DropMix community about how they kept the game alive.
Includes input from both Hasbro and Harmonix, a deep look into the attempt of modding the game, fan projects, and much more.
if you missed it in the mag, here's the online version of my feature about what testing VR games entails - includes quotes on vomit, ginger candy, and insight from devs who worked on blood & truth, job simulator, resident evil 4 vr, beat saber, and more

fun fact: two MAJOR sites were super kind to reach out offering semi-regular/permalance work this month, and in both cases the company above them did not proceed with the onboarding cause i reside in argentina
so W8-BENs and invoices are fine, but additional paperwork isn't?
“why aren’t more people reviewing norco” idk, could be the burnout of covering back to back releases ever since the second week of january up until this very last friday with three massive games launching simultaneously. just a hunch tho
For EGM's relaunch, I've spent the last 5 months talking with former and current QA employees in the game industry.
My report includes statements on crunch, contract-work, shameful management practices, testing VR games, and a look into Titanfall 2's QA team.
Ever wanted to work in QA? As today's story from
@diegoarguello66
shows, the job is about much more than tightening the graphics on level three, and working conditions are often far from ideal.
I'd rather have Spine go down in history as a small site ran by POC and queer people that helped folks to get their first byline making $100 a month thanks to the support from my own peers and friends than receive the praise from people who don't hesitate to DM to police my likes
I'm working on a piece about internships in the game industry (both paid and unpaid). If you took part of one or spent months in a studio under a contract basis, I would love to hear your story (can secure anonymity)

Soul Hackers 2 has some neat ideas, but there isn’t enough room for them to shine through. Which is a disservice to its interesting world, and even more so for its great characters.

Despite its compelling story, we wish Soul Hackers 2 rewarded us with a bit more humanity and meaning to our struggles.

I'm back! Having someone meddling with my account for almost an entire day was... not great. Doesn't seem like there was much activity aside from all my tweets up to April being deleted and blocking/unfollowing a lot of people. Feel free to follow back + I'll start unblocking
5 years of Spine is a huge milestone. I'm incredibly grateful for everybody who contributed to the site in any shape or form - y'all made this happen.
Spine continues to be independent, and there's nothing I'd like more than pay writers more.
when 90% of the sites went on a freelance budget freeze last year, most of my income came from guides writing. to this day, even if it's usually the reviews and op-eds that blow up on twitter, I still write guides on a daily basis, which allows me and many others to still be here
