@michaeljknowles Because photography created an identity crisis in western painting. When realism was attained mechanically, artists shifted efforts to achieve things a machine could not. Also - the “it’s been done” reflex. As a culture ages, innovation exhausts the realms of the beautiful.

@culturaltutor That’s a difference. Main difference is the programmatic treatment of the interior space. Classical has supports inside - forest of columns and beams. Gothic had the supports on the outside - buttresses and vaults.
