Year 21 as varsity baseball head coach. Today was Day 1 of tryouts… it was sunny, cold, and wonderful. Seems we have a great group of ballplayers this year

When your former student, now a tenure track professor with a PhD at Hopkins, invites you out for drinks so he could thank “those who poured into me and made me who I am.”
I mean, this is everything.

Stunning new mural created yesterday by an artist named Ernest Shaw (
@eshaw_art
on IG) in honor of Toni Morrison. Located in Graffiti Alley behind Motor House near North and Howard in Baltimore.
Just found out that one of my former students is missing and presumed dead in that explosion yesterday in NW Baltimore. Class of 2018. Whole life in front of him. Wonderfully nice kid. Played baseball for me too.
I hope BGE pays heavily for this.
This is your reminder that our next First Lady is a career English teacher and professor. She taught 13 years in high schools before getting her Phd and teaching college English courses.
I just finished 20 years in
@BaltCitySchools
I’m so happy an awkward Midwestern kid, fresh out of student teaching, somehow ended up in Baltimore. It’s been a life’s work. At 150-170 kids a year, I’ve taught ~3000 students so far.
Here’s to a summer of recharging and Year 21!
13 years ago, one of my sweet, smart 10th grade students was pregnant. I bought her a lounge chair and gave her a special spot in the classroom. She had her baby, worked hard, graduated, and today, a wife and mother of 3, she graduated from Coppin with a Nursing degree! So happy!
Want an amazing
@BaltCitySchools
story? My colleague directed a production of Little Shop of Horrors that was set to debut right as Covid hit in March 2020. 18 months later he REUNITED the cast, many now in college, re-rehearsed for months, and it opened last night!
After all the buzz about possibly being VP, I finally saw and heard Val Demings for the first time today, on
#meetthepress
. She's impressive. Would offer an interesting pull to both law-and-order suburban women and Black voters, I think - like Kamala (but from a swing state).
Biden canceled my $15K in February. I'd been paying it off for 21 years as a public school teacher.
I thought it wouldn't ever end, but Biden changed a provision in the PSLF law to basically change my life.
@AlecMacGillis
They didn't go to a physical building but the 95 kids who attended my 3 classes and Office Hours today did indeed attend school.
It's not the same, but it's not nothing. We analyzed The Odyssey and A Doll's House. Discussions. Literary terminology. Writing.
Our whole English department (and Fine Arts!) kept our decade-plus Halloween tradition and dressed up as The Good Place today; we did skits all day! The students loved it... can you pick everyone out? (That was the contest and a 10th grader won!)
@TheGoodPlaceNBC
#TheGoodPlace
My longtime colleague finished setting up his classroom on Sat, but on Mon he didn’t arrive at work. Our admin (how comforting it is that I work at a school where we do this) checked on him, and tragically Mr. Grabowski had passed away. Another huge loss for our school community.
If someone wanted a great “good news” story about Baltimore, they’d write that my Team Captain/CF is a SHE and plays alongside her 10th grade brother, one of the best hitters in Baltimore. Roxy pitched yesterday (1st time for me in 4 years) , setting down the opposition 1-2-3.
@angelicaross
We are in the middle of a pandemic that Trump exacerbated. To hear a Hollywood actress with access to health care and shelter proclaim they wouldn't vote to protect those less fortunate in just the question of COMPETENCE and protection from a pandemic is extremely disappointing.
Some personal news: after 22 years of teaching, my student loans have been forgiven under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness act! Thanks to
@POTUS
for the waiver to make my loans eligible after 22 years of paying. Thanks to
@AFTunion
for the help with application!
I cried buckets of tears today. Look at the joy and pride these kids feel about going to Morgan State, how they’re supporting each other and cheering each other on. It was such an amazing day!
It’s heartbreaking to see these kids standing at unprotected bus stops. Traffic is terrible. I hear trees are down on Northern Parkway and Falls. Lots of standing water. It is a real failure that
@BaltCitySchools
stayed in school a full day when everybody knew this was coming.

Like... Holden’s little bother just died of cancer. His parents haven’t dealt with it and sent him away to a school. His older brother has escaped the family too. I found him annoying the first time I read it, but as an educator I just feel empathy for this grieving, lonely kid.
Pretty interesting conflict between Hogan and DeBlasio on
#meetthepress
. Hogan: "We're doing all we can do." DeBlasio: "But we're not. Let's be honest.We haven't deployed the military. We don't have the test kits."
The normally 11-12 hour drive took 14-15 hours, but I made it home to West Michigan for Christmas, just as the big blizzard started to hit. It actually was a pretty normal drive until the white-knuckled last 3-4 hours when the snow started accumulating quickly... but I made it!
The observation from Lyft driving today is just how beautiful West Baltimore (the part of the city I know least) must have been in its heyday. There are so many beautiful structures, nooks, even natural beauty over there, turned into squalor by decades of disinvestment.
I talked with the bartenders at Joe Squared, one of whom has been serving us drinks at various spots for 20 years. He says business at Joe Squared is way down. No one comes, especially at night. Station North was supposed to be this great nightlife spot but it hasn’t happened
Mount Royal Tavern, the most interesting bar in Baltimore, just made the cover of Baltimore Magazine.
Chances of me ending up there later? Likely. As most Friday nights. But it's a late-in-the-night bar. No food, cash only. Great jukebox and vibe.
It happened! I finally closed on my house sale after many years of turmoil and terrible tenants, and several months of barely making ends meet.
After signing papers with my realtor, a trusted friend who I taught with for a decade, we hugged and I wept tears of joy.
Today I went to Swallow at the Hollow for the first time since 2003, and, while we were hesitant, it's that rare Baltimore bar that is open before 4pm. And it was a great happy hour! Good food, friendly, inexpensive, charming, perfect for our group of 20 or so.
My friend picked me up in her rental to go get her car at the repair shop, and as a thank you she bought me a sandwich from this apparently legendary deli. It may have been the best turkey Reuben of my life. I’m still in post-meal ecstasy.
Parent-teacher conferences are revealing how upset many students are about the lack of cameras being on and how almost all students are staring in a void. Woke Teacher Twitter almost NEVER acknowledges that a culture of blank screens is distressing for students.
Today a kid came up to me at Weber Farms and asked, "Do I know you?" and I was like, "Um, I don't think so," and he said, "I think you're my teacher" and it turns out he's a kid I've never seen before but he's in my Junior English class.
Never has had his camera on. Oh well.
Thrilled to share that our school had 170 out of 193 students pass IB Higher-Level English this year for an 88% pass rate and a 4.44 average. That's the most passers ever for our school and the highest average score in 5 years!
I can't even wrap my brain about how nonsensical this is.
WE HAVE BEEN OUT OF SCHOOL BUILDINGS A YEAR AND A VACCINE IS NOW HERE!
We can't wait a few more weeks to ensure everyone's safety when Baltimore City's infection rates are higher than ever?!
Baltimore’s best pizza: Gil’s Pizza on belair road. Been there for 60 years. I lived nearby for 15 before I even noticed its innocuous sign and then went online to read the reviews.
Good morning to everyone except those needlessly forcing unvaccinated teachers back into unsafe buildings in middle of a pandemic surge so students can get worse instruction than they’re getting now virtually.
A few weeks would ensure we are safely vaccinated.

I am now officially caught up with my mortgage. Through a lot of hard work driving Lyft and not spending money, I have achieved this. And even though October is due tomorrow, I get paid next in two weeks and will be able to pay it within the 15 day late window.
There were all these rumors that high schools would open later this school year, around 9 a.m. like the research about teenage brains says.
Nope. 7:45. 5 minutes earlier than before the panini.
Smh we didn’t learn anything from all this.
Today I tweet-wondered about getting copies of
@baltbeat
's "Youth Voter Guide" to my seniors, who were curious where to get reliable political news.
Next thing I know,
@LisaESnowden
is dropping off 300 copies to me during practice after school so we can distribute it tomorrow!
So... bars and restaurants down from 75% capacity back down to 50%.
I’m still flummoxed: who the hell is eating out in restaurants and drinking in bars? I love a good Resurrection straight from the tap at Brewers Art too but haven’t been out at all since March. Don’t get it.
Year 21 starts today. Let’s Play Ball!
Feeling full of optimism and so excited to me back in front of students.
About 75% of my senior 1st period is vaccinated. More plan to. That’s good news.
Last week, our principal explicitly told us she cared more about our students' mental health than their test scores. Part of our PD was to report how we are adjusting workloads for virtual instruction. It feels inspiring to have a school leader with that priority.
My quiet on Twitter lately, explained: I lost two more former students last week -- a 4-year ballplayer / student I was in touch with still, and a girl in my Junior English class last year with whom I had a good rapport. I'm throttled and so sad...
Becoming more and more convinced that distance learning is the only way to re-open this fall. It's sad, but it feels clear. My school system hasn't been able to afford a/c, most technology, hand sanitizer, etc., for years. How can they afford what would be needed to open safely?
If we go to full virtual in Baltimore in the fall, I wonder if businesses can be prevented from hiring anyone under 18 to work during school hours? Because that actual was a big problem, kids choosing an Amazon paycheck over virtual class.
One of my ballplayers who I coached all 4 years and taught for 2 is going to Harvard and majoring in English. Another (4 years coaching, 3 years teaching) is headed to my alma mater of Michigan State. Im BURSTING with pride.
My co-worker was so mad at me today! Slammed my computer shut and everything.
(She wanted to go outside for nefarious catch-whatever-lives-in-the-woodpile reasons.)
I will never understand the proclivity of Baltinoreans to set off fireworks every. single. night. of the summer. I know I don’t have small children but I do have severely traumatized dogs and I’m sure parents of young children are also annoyed.
@nhannahjones
You know that teacher unions are calling for a temporary remote period so we can teach, and you said you want to be able to discuss the harms of it. I'm not accusing you of hating teachers; I'm accusing you of not listening to teachers. Because teachers do acknowledge this.
I just told my trainer that I couldn't work out with him in December due to not having any money and he told me I'm a great client and he's going to train me for free until my house sells.
This was extremely moving to me. I can't quite believe it.
Asked our awesome Spanish teacher, who also happens to be a yoga instructor, to do some yoga today with my players. Strength, balance, flexibility, mind/body connection: yoga is perfect for baseball.
My awesome players: “best practice ever” “we should do this every Tuesday”
My Dad has a theory that if MD adopted the Michigan 10-cent bottle deposit law that it would help the litter problem in Baltimore by at least 10%. I agree. That legislation would be so good for the environment and the bay too.
I'm thinking about how
@BaltCitySchools
is forcing me back to work, in an unsafe situation that is worse for almost all students. I won't be as effective a virtual instructor supervising a handful of students while I teach my students onscreen.

FACT CHECK: Klacik lost early voters 61%–38% and Election Day voters 55–45%.
Maryland makes no distinction between mail and absentee ballots — Klacik lost those 83–17%.
See:
A friend of mine who knows what I've been going through the last 6 months or so met me at Trader Joe's last Saturday and bought me a load of groceries. Then yesterday he stopped by my house for tea, just to check in with me. How amazing is that?
Figuring out a functional, non-punitive phone policy will be one of the focuses of my summer. After virtual instruction, kids' addiction to phones is worse than ever. They scroll and watch without thinking... constantly. They need our help.
My joyful 8th period class, which somehow is as obsessed with karaoke and push-ups as I am, started filming a TikTok documentary series today called "8th Period" that they hope they can sell to Netflix. True story. We are going to split the profits.
I really love these Juniors
The 5th student of mine who passed away last year… this one an 11th grader last year… sweet, going through stuff… moved to Virginia to live with grandma. Passed in her sleep Nov. 30. Her funeral is at 4 PM today. Not sure I can do it, the timing… but I wish the family peace…
I just learned that Cava Mezze in Harbor East closed down and, wow, that is really sad.
A boozy brunch there is honestly one of the things I've most looked forward to in a post-Covid world. $35 dollars - all you can eat and bottomless mimosas? I had so many great Sundays there.
Today was one of the most traumatic Mondays I’ve ever had. Case after case of Covid and quarantining. I recorded my lessons so kids who stayed home wouldn’t lose out. Friends around district in similar throes of panic before holiday. What are we even doing this for right now?
I coached Jarrod from 2002-2005. Now I get to coach his son, a 9th grader.
Pretty cool.
He tells me he and his wife own Crust by Mack down at Whitehall Market! I need to go support.
It's time to name Stacey Abrams chair of the DNC.
Her work with voter turnout needs to be replicated everywhere.
I trust her to find the Stacey Abramses already working out in communities and helping to bring them resources and strategy.
Feel optimistic right now.
Let’s normalize having Back to School nights be virtual until the pandemic is over. No reason to have hundreds of adults in the building at the same time following their kids’ schedules
Watching
#baltimorerising
, just saw former students
@DavidPontious
,
@M_GilliamPrice
, and several others. I already knew why they were so tired that year, but now I see more. Imagine what a pleasure it was to read James Baldwin and Toni Morrison with this group of students.
Welp, going to take Ale Mary’s off my “Top 5 of Bars in Baltimore” list for a bit. Disappointing and disrespectful. It’s inexcusable there hasn’t been a relief bill for restaurants/workers, but Mayor Scott made the life-saving tough call today because inaction is MORE inexcusable
Welp, I’m positive for Covid.
Symptoms remain minimal (runny nose, a little scratch). Wish we were virtual so I can teach my students. Midterms are next week. 😔
My sister and nephews, who I haven’t seen since Christmas and who went through a rough divorce, are driving from Michigan today to spend the week with me. Hershey Park on Monday. Orioles game on Tuesday. Pool Day on Wednesday. DC on Thursday. It’s going to be great.
40% reduction in crashes is pretty amazing.
I hope Harford Rd. continues to get those mainstreet vibes, make it a destination and not just a pass-through.
In Hamilton since 2019 we’ve seen a 40% reduction in crashes and a 25% reduction in the rate at which crashes result in injuries.
In short, far fewer and less severe crashes.
And we’ve seen this in all of the extremely few places we’ve created any bike infrastructure at all.
In their time-tested Friday news drop, I just received my return-to-school
@BaltCitySchools
orders on Feb. 22.
I’ll be vaccinated fully by March 8. They want me to risk my life for a lesser education for my students instead of waiting until we are safe.
#MakeItMakeSense
Signed the paperwork to sell my house today!
I’m not counting my chickens and the house is still being shown, but this was a good offer and need to get the ball rolling.
Could be about 45 days from my life changing a LOT.
Awful news that
@BaltCountyPS
teachers are being forced to go in and work from their classrooms starting Oct. 19. Only reason for this is micromanagement. I'm working harder than I ever have and, after significant personal cost, now have better resources at home than at school.
I have reason to be outraged by the lack of a/c in schools; I've been sweating through it for 22 years. But I see real progress in
@BaltCitySchools
, even if it hasn't reached us yet. It's not the easy fix comments on social media suggest it is:
These are dark times for me financially, but it truly feels like I’m on the brink of financial freedom. This is the amazing news I got yesterday re: PSLF in the Biden administration -
I never liked Ryleigh's Oyster much anyway, but now that owner
@MacOyster
is using racist language and belittling community movements to end violence on twitter, I'm happy to find somewhere else for great street corn (which was good, but not good enough to tolerate racism).
More people in Baltimore should be talking about the fact that a charismatic star of Pose, Ryan Jamal Swain (
@RyanJamaal
), is starring in a moving play at
@centerstage_md
. He and the rest of the cast were terrific (in particular,
@GarrettMTurner
made me weep).
