I am Incredibly honored to announce that
@BillforBmore
has endorsed our campaign for City Council President!
Baltimore deserves leaders that build bridges and bring people together to solve problems instead of tearing us apart. Bill is that leader.
@BeastALT_5
@phriendlyphotog
I’ve asked BPD not to use their helicopter to chase away kids at the pool. Repeatedly. While I do worry about the safety of children swimming at night without a lifeguard, this ain’t it. Totally excessive. I’m meeting w BPD and Rec and Park next week and plan to address this.
I have asked Baltimore City Schools leadership to delay reopening until everyone has been tested for Covid19. Students and educators should only return if they are negative.
As a father and former teacher I worry that opening too early could cause increased spread and suffering.
Love your work
@nhannahjones
I think many teachers are reacting to the decades-long, bipartisan consensus that their labor is expendable. And now, so too are their lives.
People who are vaccinated can still develop Long Covid. People who are immunocompromised can still die.
We have to be able to talk abtthe harms of remote learning in a society where vaccines are available for all teachers without being accused of being anti-union or anti-teacher. We can disagree on what is the best thing to do when there are no good options without that accusation.
Exceptional reporting by
@baynardwoods
about the ugly lie that Larry Hogan keeps telling about Baltimore. He did NOT save our city.
When he killed the Red Line and sent $1 billion back to the Feds, Hogan did more harm to Baltimore than anyone he vilifies.
Welcome to the world Elias Cohen.
May you grow up to be kind and curious.
May you live a life filled with light and love.
Know this: Baby, a global pandemic couldn’t keep us away from you.
Proud to endorse
@ewarren
for President!
I taught in schools that lacked heat, and AC.
I taught children poisoned by lead paint and poverty.
In the richest country on earth, we can and must do better.
I need a President whose a fighter and a former teacher.
I’m all in!
Truly grateful to
@EkibenBaltimore
for joining me in delivering meals to our First Responders. In moments of adversity, Baltimore stands united. Proud to represent this city.
Resilience is in our DNA.
This morning I joined
@CNN
to share my perspective on what the national media misses when they swoop into our city after a tragedy.
Make no mistake, this was an absolutely devastating event and our hearts break for the six victims that are presumed to have lost their lives.
But…
Why live in Washington DC when Baltimore has the best Cherry Blossoms in the game?
It also costs far less to live here and people are way more kind. And quirky.
Love our city.
This is why we worked so hard to elect
@GovWesMoore
He has been absolutely incredible throughout this crisis. To go from having a Governor who constantly took jabs at Baltimore, to one who fights for us has been amazing. Leadership matters.
“My response is, I have no time for foolishness.”
@GovWesMoore
dismisses some Republicans who have tried to blame Baltimore’s bridge collapse on policies that encourage workplace diversity.
The debate on Critical Race Theory reminded of an experience I had as a teacher.
I taught 8th grade history in South Baltimore. Part of our curriculum was on world religions.
One day my principal called me into her office. A student and her mom were there. The mom looked mad.
We hear a lot about the challenges of restaurants in Baltimore. Yet despite the pandemic, despite crime, some are still thriving. I always point to
@EkibenBaltimore
as a business that always models respect for community and treats people with love. Plus their food is amazing!
I feel like I'm in a Black Mirror Episode: A multibillion dollar corporation is asking a cash strapped school system, in a majority Black city to pay the internet bill for children living in poverty so that they can get a public education during a global pandemic.
#ComcastCares
Tonight I am proud to declare my candidacy to become the next President of the Baltimore City Council.
This campaign is not about me, but we. When I become President, we become President. Baltimore can be the next great American comeback city. But we need to build it together.
Over the past few days I’ve had stomach issues. Yesterday it got so painful I could barely walk. Reena took me to Harbor Hospital. They thought I had an internal hernia. Haven’t eaten in 36 hours, but the pain and vomiting have stopped.
Pay attention to your health friends.
Respectfully, I’ve spent lot of time in City Schools this year and if you think that (everyone is masked) and (there is ventilation), I would encourage you to join me on my next visit.
Omicron isn’t magic. It’s a highly communicable strain of a deadly virus. Check the ICU’s.
@Zeke_Cohen
If everyone is masked (they are), there is ventilation (there is) and regular testing (there is) it is a logistical nightmare to do testing before starting school.Omicron is not magic. These measures will prevent school from being the source of spread.
Teachers want to teach. Students want to learn. Yet it feels like in liberal intellectual circles the consensus has become that teachers are just calling it in. And online learning, even just for a few days, is a profound violation of student’s civil rights.
This morning Park Rangers decided to remove a beautiful, permitted Black Lives Matter art installation in Patterson Park.
They were on their way to the dump when a neighbor reached out. I called Director Reginald Moore. They were returned and reinstalled in the park.
For clarity: Im arguing that I think teachers feel expendable. Not that anyone wants them dead, or doesn’t care about their lives. I think the profession has been so thoroughly denigrated that it’s not a stretch for teachers to feel like their voices and health don’t matter much.
I am committed to exploring ways we can prevent The Patterson Bowling Center from closing. I was distressed to learn on social media that the building was going to be sold and the bowling alley removed. Patterson is a historic, important community asset and we want them here!
Many of these same very smart, people were nowhere to be found when we were fighting for school buildings that didn’t look like jails. Or buildings w heat, AC and potable water. Where was the cry for racial justice then?
Obviously this is not a critique of you, I know your work.
I asked the SAO Mosby, in light of the violence devastating our city, and the staffing crisis in the State’s Attorney’s Office whether continuing to try Keith Davis Jr for a fifth time is a good use of our prosecutorial resources?
This was picture was taken the day we passed the Elijah Cummings Healing City Act. It was the proudest day of my professional life.
I invited my brothers Brandon and Bill to join me at the bill signing.
Today I am proud to call them my Mayor and comptroller.
THIS is Baltimore.
Here in Baltimore the Teachers Union teamed up with the Parent Community Advisory Board, multiple student groups and elected officials to buy N95 masks for students and staff.
Today we announced that we’d secured 13,000. No national journalists showed up to tell that story…
I spent many hours during my first term in City Council explaining to otherwise well-meaning constituents why criminalizing poverty isn’t a good idea.
If you still don’t get why locking people up for addiction, homelessness or trauma won’t work, I’m not sure what else to say.
I am calling on President Mosby to table his bill to allow elected officials to get a pension after 8 years.
We all should be able to retire with dignity. But this bill sends the wrong message. Now more than ever our decisions must prioritize the people we serve over ourselves.
The condescension + hyperbole in this tweet is why so many parents + educators are losing respect for public health pros at a time when we need y’all the most.
Mam. I asked for 3 extra days of break to test kids.
I also called for a vaccine passport for bars + other businesses.
If you cared about the kids of Baltimore City you’d be calling to close packed city bars where no one wears masks, instead of schools where everyone can be masked & vaccinated against serious illness. School closures cause generational harm. Bars drive transmission, not schools.
Is
@GovLarryHogan
aware that the Baltimore Police Department is a state agency and that he is in fact the state’s executive?
Is he aware that he vetoed bi-partisan bills to reduce violence in Baltimore by funding evidence-based programs like Safe Streets?
No more excuses right?
Earlier today, I met with
@mayorbcyoung
and Commissioner Harrison to discuss the ongoing violent crime crisis in Baltimore City. There can be no more excuses and no more delays—we need to attack this crisis from all sides so that we can finally put an end to the bloodshed.
@Zeke_Cohen
“I work every single day to reduce violence in my city as co-chair of Baltimore’s Trauma Informed Care Taskforce.”
So you discuss the issues, that’s it?
@Zeke_Cohen
your district has become extremely dangerous since you took office. Numbers don’t lie. Nino is correct.
A public health pro from John Hopkins tweeted at me (and by extension the teachers and parents) that schools were the safest place and we didn’t care about kids. Hopkins is almost all virtual for the next two weeks.
I’ve spent my entire career teaching and fighting for children.
Incredibly proud of
@prattlibrary
for moving away from their Zero Tolerance For Substance Use Policy and instead bringing Peer Recovery Coaches into the library.
We lose far too many neighbors to overdose deaths. Zero tolerance doesn’t work. People like
@BruceDonna71
save lives.
Today Comcast doubled the speed of Internet Essentials.
Meetings, letters, resolutions, shaming and pressure made this happen.
Baltimore's children forced a multibillion dollar corporation to respect their right to a public education. Thats real power.
I’m in Harris Teeter getting my wife flowers. The amount of dudes in the checkout line that waited until the last minute to buy flowers is absolutely outrageous. Shame on us.
That said, mine are by far the prettiest.
A few months ago I was in a meeting with City Schools students and a Comcast exec. The students told the exec that the speeds of Comcast’s Internet Essentials weren’t fast enough for them to learn. The executive insinuated that the students were lying or confused.
They were not.
I just quit working for Xfinity/Comcast. I want families to know that the special Essentials program they offer to low income households for 9.95/mo is only 25mbps and in almost every case, not an adequate speed for children to do their live “zoom” online class work.
Incredibly excited to join
@iamwesmoore
Transition Team on the Health Policy Committee!
I cannot wait to have a Governor and LG who share our vision of building a truly trauma responsive City and State.
This is our moment!
We are experiencing heartbreaking violence. Every ounce of prosecutorial power must be used wisely.
The SAO stated she is concerned about justice for Kevin Jones. So am I. Justice for all means justice for both the victim and the accused. 5 trials is too many.
Free Keith.
Why are these teachers standing in the rain?
For a pay raise?
No.
So that they can teach. And students can learn. Online. For free.
Comcast is demanding $650,000 from Baltimore City Schools to keep children online during a pandemic.
It’s morally bankrupt. We deserve better.
After Destiny Harrison was brutally murdered in her beauty salon, the Healing City movement created a scholarship in her name.
The Destiny’s Dream scholarship helps Mervo students become beauticians.
We set out to raise $5,000.
Today we announced that we raised over $71,000!
Mam, the school board is unpaid.
@AteiraGriffin
is absolutely amazing.
You were swindled out of $4,000,000 by a consultant, out of the $8,300,000 that you swindled from other people.
For that amount of money you could have put several rec centers in the city you don’t live in.
BREAKING-
@MayorBMScott
adds another admin to the payroll/
@BaltCitySchools
board just as story comes out that the administrators are eating the money & kids aren’t being educated.
I can’t make this stuff up.
We have been pushing hard against Comcast’s predatory data caps. But let’s not forget the real leaders in the fight to close Baltimore’s Digital Divide Divide: Our students.
Baltimore’s youth beat corporate greed each and every time.
Today I’ll introduce a resolution calling on the EPA to reverse its decision to send contaminated water from East Palestine to Baltimore.
We should not be a dumping ground for toxic sludge.
Campaigning in the rain for
@BenJealous
. Why?
I’m a Councilman whose constituents cant get to work
#RedLine
I’m a teacher whose students faced gross inequity
I’m a Dad raising my Daughter here
I need a Governor who shares my belief: Baltimore is the Greatest City in America.
Teachers weren’t asking for extra days because they didn’t want to work. Just the opposite. They were concerned that if we went back this week, we’d see a mass outbreak and have to shut down.
When the school system said “No,” we organized a campaign for N95 masks and vaccines.
Today I’m proud to endorse my friend, Franca.
Let me be clear: I cast my ballot for Joe Biden to defeat the most corrupt President in history. I’m a proud, lifelong Democrat. But this moment is bigger than politics. And it’s bigger than party.
This moment is For The People.
Today I was arrested with
@CASAforall
protesting for a pathway to citizenship for millions of our undocumented neighbors.
Baltimore’s immigrant community is essential. Their blood, sweat and tears helped build our city and country. They deserve to live outside of the shadows.
These same groups had pushed to delay school reopening until we could test all of our kids. That would probably mean an extra 4 or 5 days coming back from winter break while our ICU’s are overloaded.
It was as if we’d called for kids to burn books and tear up their homework.
They knocked doors for
@BenJealous
because he'll knock down barriers for them.
If you believe in education over incarceration
If you support healthcare for all
If you want a Governor who won't leave Baltimore off the map
Vote for Ben Jealous.
Paid for by
#BabiesForBen
Killing the Redline was a devastating blow to our majority Black city.
Dishonoring the memory of Freddy Gray is a gross appeal to become the Republican nominee in 4 years.
Try growing up poisoned by lead paint in public housing and see how you turn out. Freddie deserved better.
To conclude, I hope you pay close attention and cover the thoughtful way that educators in Baltimore, and in so many cities across the country are actually working hand in hand with parents and kids during this impossible, miserable moment.
Last year, Baltimore Crisis Response Inc helped divert 1834 calls for mental health crises away from police.
This year BCRI has a $3,500,000 funding gap.
We face a profound mental health crisis. Deaths from violence and overdose are staggering.
We must fully fund this program.
As Baldwin said, “American history is more beautiful, and more terrible than anything anyone has ever said about it.” Our children deserve to learn it all.
To my neighbors and constituents, please do not take unwanted pictures of people experiencing homelessness or the tents they are living in. Please don’t call the police. Living in poverty is not a crime. Please do not ask me or any other city official to remove encampments.
.
@kasie
is sporting her Orioles orange this morning in support of Baltimore as the city mourns those lost in the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse. Watch her talk to Baltimore City Councilmember
@Zeke_Cohen
about the recovery efforts.
Chair or no chair I’m still going to fight with every breath I’ve got for Baltimore’s children, families and educators. We just have to organize harder.
I'm really proud of the work
@Zeke_Cohen
did as Chair of Education and Youth Committee. He partnered with educators & students and, more importantly, he listened to us when we needed someone to hear our side.
Today
@CouncilmanYitzy
and I are calling on the Director of DPW to resume weekly recycling within the next eight weeks or resign. We should increase salaries for sanitation workers and temporarily hire contractors to fill in the gaps.
Baltimore deserves excellent city services.
After many painful conversations Admiral’s Cup, Maxs, Slainte, Koopers, Horse, Woodys, Bookmakers, Poppy + Stella, have decided to voluntarily, temporarily close. These are extremely difficult decisions and I appreciate their leadership.
Public health is paramount.
Today I’m proud to enthusiastically endorse my friend and brother Brandon Scott to be the next Mayor of Baltimore. We need a Mayor who can pull people together in this painful moment. Brandon is a deep thinker and someone who operates with a lens toward equity. (1/2)
Baltimore has done well in mitigating Covid due to the leadership of our Mayor, school system and scrappy, communities.
But we have the oldest schools in the state (bad ventilation). Most of our high schoolers ride public transit. And many kids live in multigenerational homes.
Disturbed to learn that a BPD officer misgendered a trans woman. Students have the right to protest. People have the right to be who they are. Today I will speak to Commissioner Harrison about this violation.
We have a long way to go toward becoming an inclusive city.
I want to extend an enormous Mazel tov to my dear friend
@faganharris
who was named Chief of Staff to
@iamwesmoore
Fagan is a brilliant, compassionate strategic thinker. He has an huge heart for the people of our city and state. So proud of you brother. We are at your service.
I want to take a moment to thank our teachers. What you've done this year is extraordinary.
You deserve to live in a world where your labor is fully valued online and in person. Where you don't have to constantly come out of pocket, or risk health in a pandemic.
We see you.
Last night I launched an exploratory committee to consider running for City Council President in 2024.
I will spend the next few months listening to neighbors. We will collectively determine how I can best serve Baltimore. We will move together.
Yesterday I met with Joel Fitzgerald, Mayor Pugh’s nominee for police commissioner. I cannot support this nomination without seeing a completed background-check and concrete plans for public townhalls across Baltimore with stops in every police district. Full statement attached.
We know there are no good options. Getting our children back to school is critically important.
But preserving health & avoiding death must be our top priority. We ask to delay the current plan for reopening until educators can be vaccinated and a detailed plan can be provided.
In 2019 Destiney Harrison was murdered in her salon. She was a mom and entrepreneur. She was everything we hope our kids will become.
Today Destiney’s mom and I awarded 40 scholarships to students seeking to pursue a career in cosmetology. This scholarship is her legacy.
During this $ Home hearing the key witness (President of NACA) personally insulted our Mayor and Councilmember Ramos. He also made a veiled threat about a riot breaking out with 700 people that are supposedly at city hall. I counted about 150.
I won’t stand for that nonsense.
Paging
@BaltimoreDPW
please provide more information for residents. Namely:
Is the possible contamination limited to District 9 or could it spread to other areas?
What are you doing right now to mitigate it so ALL of our residents have clean, drinkable water?
Thank you to
@MayorBMScott
for vetoing the Surety Bond Bill.
Make no mistake, this was the result of a broad and deep organizing effort led by renters, teachers, elders, young people, advocates and everyday Baltimoreans.
The people spoke. And their voices were heard!
Honestly, I respect the hustle. It takes chutzpah to bilk $8,000,000 from gullible Republicans, only to lose epically and then blame it on voter fraud without a shred of evidence.
I was hoping you’d be able to parlay it into a regular spot on Fox and Friends. Or at least a blog.
@Zeke_Cohen
Scam? Lol. What did I gain? Again, you can’t refute the fact that your district is going down the toilet thanks to your “leadership”.
You grew up rich & now feel guilty. Rich white liberal syndrome. I’ll send some cameras to your district this week. You’re welcome.
Family: after a few rough days I’m feeling much better!
Truly grateful for all the love, support and many offers to visit. I feel incredibly blessed to have my Baltimore village.
Huge shout out to the staff of Harbor Hospital. They were extraordinary during my grossest hours!
Tell us again
@GovLarryHogan
how there is “no public health reason to keep kids out of schools.”
Our Governor vetoes Kirwan, denying a generation their right to an adequate education, then bullies teachers for wanting to open schools safely in a pandemic.
To all my friends who are teachers or parents: you deserve better.
First thing tomorrow I’ll be on the phone trying to help figure out which kids need computers.
Thank you
@BTUBaltimore
@BCPSSPCAB
@SOMOSCityKnight
and others for your leadership.
Baltimore is not broken. Despite this challenging chapter, it remains the honor of a lifetime to serve on the City Council. I have great faith in the people of this city and in my colleagues on the Council who fight every day for a better Baltimore.
From the day I moved to Baltimore, there is no where else I’ve ever wanted to live.
This city adopted me. It’s where Reena and I fell in love. It’s the only place we could imagine raising Maya.
President Trump, take your racist, ill-informed tweets elsewhere. We love it here.
Americans are often averse to acknowledging that which makes us feel guilty. We willfully ignore the most painful parts of our history.
When we tell children that the Holocaust was exaggerated, or ban books, or teach Confederate nostalgia, we do a disservice to our democracy.
At the hearing on Squeegeeing. In addition to bringing together agencies, businesses, non-profits + young people, we should provide Universal Basic Income.
When adolescents have experienced trauma + their basic needs aren't met, it's challenging to hold a job or learn in school.
I asked the Mayor's Office to open City Hall with an hybrid option. I am thrilled to say they will open soon in-person with an online option. Everyone will be able to engage!
Our Democracy is incredibly fragile right now. Public participation is critical. We need every voice.
Duckpin Bowling is coming back to Southeast Baltimore. This is a big win for our communities!
I am deeply grateful to
@LukeClippinger
and
@SenBillFerg
for obtaining the first beer and wine license in MD’s history contingent on a duckpin bowling alley.
This morning billionaires were squabbling over who would be first to launch themselves into space.
Meanwhile on earth our planet is burning in a climate crisis and thousands of kids in Baltimore don’t have air-conditioning in their schools.
One element of yesterday’s big veto that should not go unnoticed was the role of local reporting.
@BaltimoreBrew
@WYPR881FM
and other reporters covered this story with tenacity. By elevating this seemingly obscure issue they did a true service to Baltimore.
Journalism matters.
Yesterday a constituent posted a video of Canton Waterfront Park with a few tents set up, tagging the Police Department, my office and a number of news stations asking if these camps were illegal. The implication was that the people should be removed.
Today Reena and I made it official: I will be on the ballot as a candidate for City Council President in 2024!
I wanted Reena to be there with me because she is my rock. She is a brilliant physician, a loving mom and the best partner a guy could ever ask for. She also lets me…
Thank you to The Trace for profiling the Healing City Act. The goal is to help communities heal from trauma in libraries, rec centers, schools and other spaces throughout Baltimore.
Proud that we are the first city in America to take this approach!
Today
@MayorBMScott
swore in the Trauma-Informed Care Taskforce. This task force is a love letter to our city. And I am proud to be its co-chair. Our mandate is to fundamentally transform how we do business both inside and outside of Government.
Black Trans Lives Matter about to be painted on North Charles St.
“This is our Stonewall moment.”
Baltimore owes a debt of gratitude to our black trans community. Particularly folks like Safe Haven who fight every day for vulnerable people.
Most Baltimore experience ever: I met Ariel who is a member of PopScope. They pop up around the city with a telescope. The goal is to bring people together around astronomy. I saw the moon from Mt. Vernon.
Love this city!
For the multiple folks who have asked, I support a FULL plastic bag ban. I want my daughter to grow up in a city that doesn’t have bags hanging from trees and polluting our waters.
Climate change is very, very real. We should act accordingly.
Today Mayor Scott will swear in the Trauma Informed Care Taskforce. Elijah Cummings is smiling down at us from heaven.
At the end of his life, when his health was faltering, when he was prosecuting the former President, Elijah called us to this work. We are part of his legacy.
