My daughter just asked my birth year and I said 1976, and she said, "Dang! That's close to the Holocaust." And I was going to object, but it's actually closer to the Holocaust than it is to the present day and now I'm messed up for the rest of the day.
Journalists, stop calling the failure to pass the voting rights bill a โmajor setbackโ for Democrats. It is a major setback for DEMOCRACY. The right to vote is not a partisan issue. Stop framing it as such and legitimizing anti-voter efforts.
With a bachelorโs degree I worked part-time at Subway, as a receptionist, and as a cashier at a department store. I sold mattresses with a masterโs degree. I also am human enough to know that your job does not dictate your value.
I was invited to give an MLK speech today and a small number of members of the group hosting me wrote and then leaked emails opposing my giving this speech, as it dishonored Dr. King for me to do so. They called me a "discredited activist" "unworthy of such association with King"
Iโve been thinking more and more that newsrooms need to hold an all-staff meeting where they invite democracy experts & historians in & really do a massive reset of how we are covering whatโs happening in our country right now. Itโs not about partisanship but covering reality.
A model, in many ways, for how journalists in real time should be forcing politicians to back up their claims with facts and sources and not simply allowing them to go unchallenged.
Jon interviewed Leslie Rutledge, Arkansas Attorney General, about why her state banned gender-affirming care for minors - ignoring the guidelines of major medical organizations and taking the decision out of parentsโ hands. Watch the full interview on

This is an argument against every public good and thatโs not how public goods work. Why should we pay, then, for public school if our kids attend private or we have no kids? Why pay for libraries if we choose to and have the ability to buy books instead of borrow?
Pelosi also questioned the policy wisdom of cancelling student loan debt:
โSupposeโฆyour child just decided they, at this time, [do] not want to go to college but youโre paying taxes to forgive somebody elseโs obligations. You may not be happy about that."
I am confused about how one state going Republican for governor and another remaining Democrat is the death knell for Bidenโs agenda. Seems like the scripts are written no matter the results.
This is why itโs not enough to tell people to vote. People did vote. These voter suppression laws are in response to people organizing and voting. Our democracy is on the cusp and we cannot treat this as politics as usual.
Happy Birthday to Frederick Douglass, the greatest American ever born. When he self-emancipated, Douglass chose Valentine's Day as his birthday because his mother gave him a heart-shaped cake right before she was sold away. This country has taken so much, and yet we keep giving.
I have been overwhelmed by all the support you all have shown me. It has truly fortified my spirit and my resolve. You all know that I will OK. But this fight is bigger than me, and I will try my best not to let you down.
Itโs actually simple: If you can feel pride in things you didnโt personally take part in, then you can feel shame in things you didnโt personally take part in. Some of you are motivated to make this hard, but itโs only hard bc you want the glory of our history but not the burden.
Remember when we were told they weren't opposing the teaching of Black history, just "CRT"? And how many dismissed those of us who said these laws were anti-history laws, and anti-Black? Perhaps one day folks will listen to those who know.
Yโall, my daughter has been asking for a dog since she was five years old. The other day I told her for the first time Iโd actually consider it. Why did I do that? She has been going IN since I said that. And last night she hit us with the 10-slide PowerPoint presentation. ๐๐ฉ๐๐ฝ
In 2021, I was tested & disrespected. I had the audacity to say I refuse while wearing this bright red hair that so angers people who think intellect & success must adhere to their norms. Most of all tho, Iโve been loved, supported, uplifted. Grateful and looking forward to 2022.
Iโve avoided tweeting about the white supremacist massacre so not to dishonor the dead in anyway. But I keep obsessing over the constant drumbeat of the last year abt the dangers of CRT when the literal violent danger of the white supremacy CRT exposes has been downplayed/denied.
I left them with this: People who oppose today what he stood for back then do not get to be the arbiters of his legacy. The real Dr. King cannot be commodified, homogenized, and white-washed and whatever side you stand on TODAY is the side you would have been back then.
Imagine being in a foreign country, not speaking the language, desperate and with your child, and being dropped off in the middle of the street in a strange city with nothing because a politician wants to stoke the ugliest instincts of humanity. American exceptionalism indeed.
Folks on here saying this will energize โwomenโ voters are blatantly ignoring that majority of Black, Latina, Asian and Indigenous women voted against Republicans, and majority of white women voted for despite Rs explicit promise to end Roe. So, what are you really saying?

Dr. King was a radical critic of racism, capitalism and militarism. He didn't die. He was assassinated. And many, including Regan, fought the national holiday we're not commemorating. If you haven't read, in entirety, his speeches, you've been miseducated & I hope that you will
If you understand the history of Montgomery -- one of the most prolific slave-trading cities in the US turned brutally repressive apartheid regime after, and majority Black but JUST got its first Black mayor -- it gives so much more perspective to this video. Trust.

America is not a racist country but if we teach our children about all the racist things this country has done they might think the country is racist is a helluva argument, I have to say.
He shot this 60-year-old woman three times. This is the result of a society with too many guns and too little tolerance and the certainty that the law will protect you for shooting first.
An 81-year-old Ohio man shot and killed an Uber driver he believed was working with a scammer, according to officials who said the victim was sent to the home by the same scammer.
Loletha Hall didn't threaten him, didn't have a weapon or assault him
Here's a thought: Maybe vaccinated people are still wearing masks because none of us know who is and is not vaccinated and so it is an act of being unselfish to not force workers/others to determine who is putting them at risk and who isn't. WE'RE STILL IN A PANDEMIC.
Many companies are stepping up and offering travel and other assistance for their employees to get abortion access but women should not have to share this private health decision with their employers in order to access what yesterday was a constitutional right.
I have to say hotels claiming they arenโt cleaning rooms daily because of Covid while operating fully maskless bars and restaurants is a great hustle.
Are folks realizing how insane this is? One, that teaching an academic theory is prohibited by law? Two, that whatโs really outlawed is teaching about race, racism and accurate history? Three, that educators are losing their jobs over this?
Dr. James Whitfield, a Black high school principal in Texas, is fighting to get back to his job after being accused of promoting critical race theory, which is outlawed in the state.

"I have never asked for special treatment. I did not seek it here. All I asked was to be judged by my credentials and treated fairly and equally."
@nhannahjones
' official statement on declining the tenure offer from UNC Chapel Hill:
DEI is not the reason why you presume Black people arenโt qualified. Racism is the reason. And a need to believe a Black person could not possibly do better than you. I know it and you know it, too.
Because clearly it still needs to be said: Student loan forgiveness is not about irresponsible people taking out education loans and then not paying. These are compounding interest loans: borrowers are struggling because they pay many times OVER what they borrowed and still owe!
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE TWEETS SOME NONSENSE DOES NOT MEAN I AM REQUIRED TO DEBATE THEM ON HERE OR ANYWHERE ELSE. MY PUBLISHED WORK IS MY DEBATE.
If you're going to lock up everything in the drug store, an already demeaning shopping experience, at least have enough workers to open up the cases for all the customers who just need a razor.
This is why the 1619 Project exists. This is why the decades of scholarship that undergirds the 1619 Project exists. Because if we do nothing, they will co-opt our history and use it against us.
What we are seeing is exactly why the
#1619Project
needed to exist in the first place. All these laws are doing are confirming the thesis of the project and affirming why this work must and will go forward.
I used to only read history. Now Iโm mostly reading on fascism and authoritarianism and how how democracies fail. If youโre a journalist in these times and not doing the same, Iโm wondering why.
When I deleted Facebook some years ago over privacy concerns, I missed it for approximately four days. All I have felt since then is liberated. Trust me, it will be ok if you stop using it.
So, I scrapped my original speech and spent the entire first half of it reading excerpts from a bunch of Dr. King's speeches, but without telling anyone that I was doing so, leading the audience to think King's words were mine. And, whew, chile, it was AMAZING.
Oh, the uncomfortable silence as I read Dr. King's words at a commemoration of Dr. King's life when people had no idea that these were his words. When I revealed that everything I said to that point was taken from his speeches between '56 and 67... Can you say SHOOK!
To test how race-neutral the DeSantis bill and others like it are, Black, Latino and Indigenous parents should flood these states with lawsuits about lessons that make their children feel discomfort, or that one race is superior to another and see how it goes.
When the speech was over, Father Pfleger, who had been been cheering me on from the crowd, whispered in my ear: That's what you call the "You Gone Learn Today" speech and I ๐. Because, yeah.
Nearly 70 years after her death, Henrietta Lacks โ whose cancer cells were taken without her knowledge or consent and led to world-changing advances in medical and scientific researchโ was honored by the World Health Organization.
I came from a working-class family. My parents took out Plus Loans & desperate to make something of myself I took out 10s of 1000s in student loans. After repaying many multiples of my original debt, at 45 I finally paid them off. Iโd wish that on no one coming behind me.
Do you ever notice how few teachers are ever interviewed in these so-called CRT stories? Simply allowing Republican operatives posing as โconcerned parentsโ to fear-monger about what they donโt want or what they say is happening, isnโt actually good reporting.

Helluva take from the king of shitty takes. You canโt simultaneously valorize an entire profession as innately heroic and then justify letting children die because Americans donโt think police should lynch a Black man on national television.
Racist slurs have always been about power, that is why it is convenient for people atop the racial hierarchy to pretend otherwise. There is no equivalent to the N-word that Black people can deploy against white people because of the history of white power in the US.
Journalists: the Jacksonville mass murder was not racially motivated violence, it was RACIST violence. We must be specific and direct with our language.
Iโm thinking leg two of the
#1619Project
needs to be the โbanned bookโ tour, where I go to all the states that have banned the teaching of this work! What do yโall think?
This was a dream I didnโt even have the audacity to dream. No magazine has meant more to me than
@essence
. As a Black girl from a working-class family in a working-class town, Essence exposed me to the beautiful spectrum and possibilities of Black womanhood. I am pinching myself.
Yโall. Thereโs no illusion anymore. Kids in the diverse Miami-Dade school system in Florida having to sign permission slips to be read to from a book because itโs โby an African American.โ
Why would a journalist even ask this question? When was the last time journalists asked a white governor if a catastrophe happened because too many white people were hired? This is how racial propaganda works. Media should not legitimize it.
Parents in NYC public schools are being asked to try to get our children tested b4 returning to school tomorrow. This is an abject failure. If the city wanted testing, they should have provided home tests before the holiday or rapid testing for every student at the door tomorrow.
Pat Robertson says critical race theory is "a monstrous evil" that is urging people of color to "rise up and overtake their oppressors" so that once they've "gotten the whip handle," they'll then "instruct their white neighbors how to behave."
REPORTER: Is this unfair to people who paid their student loans or chose not to take out loans?
BIDEN: Is it fair to people who, in fact, do not own multi-billion-dollar businesses if they see one of these guys getting all the tax breaks? Is that fair? What do you think?
Through the years people would ask me why I didnโt teach at an HBCU and Iโd say because no HBCU ever asked me. Thank you

My hair color really makes some of you so mad because it grates against your classist, misogynoir notions of what a successful Black woman should look like. I refuse to wear the uniform and everything about my look is intentional. Have a great day!
5 years ago I left my job to start selling weed with some guys I grew up with. Our first year we sold $1.2M to dispensaries a pound at a time.
Now we're publicly traded and we'll do $130M in 2022.
Millions of jars, joints, edibles, vapes.
Here's what we did:
This is absolutely hilarious because literally from 1790 to 1967 every single member of the Supreme Court was selected initially through an exclusionary criteria of race and gender. What is wrong with some of you?
Biden is now going to create one of the more jarring and incongruous moments in the history of the Supreme Court. When the justices will hear arguments on the use of race in admissions, one member will have been selected initially through an exclusionary criteria of race and sex.
Last night's shooting & the appalling rise of anti-Asian violence stem frm a sick society where nationalism has again been stoked & normalized. Anti-Black & anti-Asian racism & violence run in tandem in the U.S. Both grps were brought here for labor but never meant to be citizens
The type of country that prevented a talented player from playing strictly because of his race is precisely the history you donโt want children learning.
75 years ago, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier as the first African American Major League Baseball Player. Today we honor him and his lasting legacy.
This is why journalists must stop reporting law enforcement accounts as fact. We should be highly skeptical at all times. We know better. Do your jobs.

A truly powerful moment in my journey was getting to meet Ms. Viola Fletcher, radiant at 109, the oldest living survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre. As we held each other's books, I felt the power and gravity of the moment: They want to hide a history that we are still living.
Let me say, again, the use of the word wokeness and/or woke by journalists is lazy and biased and counts on the reader/viewer filling in with his or her own stereotypes. If you canโt state specifically what you mean, why are you writing it?
A few weeks ago, parents, activists and educators in a red state where Republicans hold a legislative supermajority successfully beat back an anti-history (CRT) law, & yet I saw no national coverage of it at all. This says something important about media.
Interesting choice by
@CBSSunday
-- my favorite news show btw-- to do an entire segment in book bans that didn't feature one POC, that didn't mention the racial makeup of Moms of Liberty, and that erased the role the targeting of 1619 Project has played in all of this.
I do not understand people who think journalism is important enough to read but somehow are offended that it must be paid for. Producing journalism is not free.
Thomas Jefferson's occupation was an enslaver. That's what he did for a living. Enslaved people built Monticello, worked its lands, made the nails and the bricks, cooked the food, and one enslaved woman bore his children. He went to Monticello for a fairy tale & got hit w reality
Fox brings on a guest who was a recent visitor to Thomas Jeffersonโs Monticello, to complain about his tour guide over-emphasizing TJโs history as a slave owner: โI just thought that Monticello would be protected from this disease of wokeism.โ
Just got home from two days of emotionally devastating filming in my ancestral land of Mississippi and this was waiting for me. Itโs one of the most beautiful things Iโve ever seen and I finally am holding it in my hands. The very first image in the book: Thatโs my dad. ๐ค๐ค๐ค
To be clear: We should care about Ukraine. But not because it is European, or the people appear white, or they are โcivilizedโ and not โimpoverished.โ All people deserve to be free and to be welcomed when their countries are at war.
I cannot predict what will happen in our country, but I do believe we will look back and be appalled at the failures of journalism in this period of clear and in my lifetime, unprecedented, attacks on freedom of speech and our democratic institutions.
Every time they do this, they think they are insulting me, but really are just revealing how much it bothers them to the point of obsession that this Black woman has done something that they never will and never can.
Even if you feel the jury got it right for legal reasons, what kind of person are you to celebrate *someone* who went armed to a protest with an illegal gun and killed two people.
When you study racism as long as I have, little can be truly shocking, but my God, this was just breathtaking and heartbreaking and shows once again how little so many in this society acknowledge the basic humanity of Black children. It's also why investigative reporting MATTERS.
Three police officers went to an *elementary* school in Tennessee & arrested four Black girls.
One girl fell to her knees. Another threw up. Police handcuffed the youngest, an 8 yo with pigtails.
Their supposed crime? Watching some boys fight โ and not stopping them. (THREAD)
