Tomorrow I am 68 and it’s D for Dorothy day and by chance it’s 12 weeks since I came off Tocilizumab so I’ve been told I am no more likely to die than others of my age. Yippee!
I have had so many great comments recently. Hundreds. As I have no profile, that is lovely. Some have criticised me. That is great too because democracy is everything. The Sun said I was puffed-up which is literally true as I am on massive steroids to stop me going blind. Ho ho!
Brilliant work by Channel 4 Dispatches, the Sunday Times and the Times in finally telling the story that so many in journalism have wanted to tell for so long. Congratulations to the brave women who spoke. Watch. Read. Wait for more.
BREAKING: Russell Brand - In Plain Sight
#C4dispatches
will air at 2100 on Channel 4. We will hear testimony from 5 women who make allegations including rape, sexual assault and controlling and emotionally abusive behaviour - which he denies. Collab with
@thetimes
- watch at 9pm
Delighted to have just received an Honorary Doctorate from Portsmouth University which is a seriously impressive institution and one of the most successful new universities in the UK.
I’ve had lovely comments about Desert Island Discs.Thank you. As chair of the Ethical Journalism Network I ask for ideas on responsible reporting of coronavirus .We have thoughts, please share yours; if you are a journalist or a human being. I am both.
I have across all platforms and email received so many wonderful messages that, although I don’t tweet, I feel I must say thank you. Most have been from women about the fact I spoke on women’s issues. If true, women should speak more.
To think some newspapers criticised me for calling Boris Johnson ‘a known liar’ in August 2019 and my statement of truth was deemed controversial and inappropriate by some commentators.
For nearly 20 years I was the boss of Krishnan at Channel Four, but it’s been on the BBC he has been a revelation to us all. He really can dance, but also he has given of himself and shown himself in a way male journalists hardly ever do. And he’s shown it’s a great thing to do.
We supposedly invaded the Falklands to preserve their ‘way of life’. Watch ITV Sunday 10.15pm to discover some of the horrible secrets of that way of life.
Louisa is an outstanding journalist and programme maker, a great leader, a colleague of huge integrity and someone I have witnessed stand up for what she believes in. She will be a brilliant Head of News and Current Affairs. And so tall! Congratulations.
I keep reading that people across the world are worried about running out of toilet paper. When I was a child this happened regularly and we used The Daily Telegraph with no ill effects.
My first day done as President - of the terrific Murray Edwards College at Cambridge University. Didn’t invade any countries, engage in international catastrophes or dye myself orange. Phew!
My question in 2019 was, ‘What do we do when a known liar becomes our Prime Minister?’ I said then all journalists needed to call his lies out for the sake of our country and our democracy. Shame that didn’t happen.
With the fabulous Lem Sissay who just gave me an Honorary Doctorate at my brilliant alma mater Manchester University. I am honoured and thrilled. We agreed UK universities must transform entry! Let’s act!!!
Tonight I spoke out on Newsnight against the liar who is Martin Bashir because TV journalists are regulated in their work, trusted by the public according to all studies, and good investigators of wickedness. BBC investigate fully please
Krishnan Guru-Murthy was declared the top network news presenter at the Royal Television Society Journalism Awards tonight. An honour rightly bestowed! No flimflam in his interviews! Congratulations.
Marianna Spring is a brilliant and admirable journalist whose work inspires us all. Keep at it Marianna. The world needs you and the BBC is lucky to have you. Best wishes, Dorothy
“80% of online abuse received by BBC journalists is directed at one woman: the corporation’s 27-year-old disinformation correspondent.”
Brilliant to speak to Sunday Times Mag on investigating disinfo, hate, social media & Radio 4’s Marianna in Conspiracyland pod! New ep later.
In the spirit of fuck it, I’m adding the great

@Channel4
& legendary kicker of arses. I dream of her strength 💕
Well I am President of Murray Edwards College Cambridge. I am not posh and I feel absolutely welcome snd happy here. Tell her to get in touch with me and I can reassure her.
I’ve written my first book - perfect for your enjoyment during the election period. Do tell me what you think..you can get it here or in all good bookshops (and some bad ones)
For 17 years I was the Head of News and Current Affairs at Channel Four in the UK. When you move on, you let others carry the baton. But now I must say it is wrong for Israel to shut down Al Jazeera. Their journalism has been some of the finest I ever saw.
"We believe in the freedom of the press...and that includes those reporting in the conflict in Gaza."
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre describes Israel’s plans to shut down Al Jazeera as “concerning” ⤵️
Honoured to have been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of The West of Scotland in my home town Paisley. Thank you David Scott for your generous encomium. Thank you UWS, an innovative leading young university.
Just had a guest to dinner who brought a nice bottle of wine and some toilet rolls, without being asked to do so at all. As I have refused to panic buy as a matter of principle, this was appreciated and thoughtful.
So proud to present the Grierson Trust Trustees Award to Anna Hall whose brilliant films I have admired for decades and who is now pioneering a new more family-friendly way of women working in television so they don’t have to choose between their children and their careers
What an incredible honour for me to receive the
@griersontrust
Trustees Award frm my all time heroine
@dorotheabyrne
. She commissioned the first film I directed
#BorrowABaby
& I had the huge privilege of working with her at C4 for 20 yrs. She has truly led the way for women in TV
I’ve been reading this morning about the serious shortage of NHS staff. In the last few days I’ve had to visit several hospitals and been shown such attention and kindness by each person who was so busy. Incredibly impressive.
Replying to Gwenda who, like me, lived as a child with very elderly relatives. That changes for your whole life how you see things. My personal focus now is how I can co-operate with my neighbours to help and support the very elderly people in my street in case they need me.
Jon Snow has just said we must all watch Channel Four News tomorrow night to see a remarkable report about children living desperate lives in Idlib. I watch Jon every night. Please join me tomorrow.
You must watch this film made by the wonderful doctor Saleyha Ahsan who I am proud to say is my dear friend. Thank you Saleyha for all you and your family are doing for the NHS.
Margaret Costello, a retired nurse who taught many other nurses working today and featured in my

- sadly passed away last night. She leaves a legacy of nursing in Ysbyty Gwynedd, including her niece Nia Michael.
Murray Edwards College’s beautiful new boat is launched! Thanks to all who donated to support our inspiring teams and to Peterhouse for giving our boats a home!
The oldest church in the Lake District, much loved by my Desert Island luxury Mr B. It is dedicated to St Bega who fled Ireland to preserve her virginity. Apparently it is ‘our most precious gift’. Oops!
Farewell Sean Connery. Would you have returned home after independence and paid taxes? Allegedly, your mum and my granny were in the same Edinburgh Catholic Mothers’ Union. My other Hollywood connection is that Chris Hemsworth and I shared a personal trainer. But not success.
Murray Edwards College Cambridge is so honoured that award-winning CNN journalist Nima Elbagir and Tate Director Maria Balshaw have become Honorary Fellows. Women who dazzle in their fields.
It is the most incredible privilege to be inducted as an Honorary Fellow
@MECCambridge
To have my sisters, my family and my team (who are family!) there. I can’t say how it felt to look out and see Mama rocking her توب (national dress) as I repeated the fancy latin words.
The only film I ever commissioned because a man made me feel guilty. At a
@Bafta
event actor
@MichaelKeaton
condemned investigative journalists for not investigating UN rape and I realised he was right. Imagine! A Hollywood actor who put a Channel 4 supremo to shame.

At the brilliant venue The Art Workers Guild about to interview Robert Peston in aid of the brilliant charity Stories for Life. If you know any of his secrets, do post them here!
One of the funniest films of the year. I especially love the obsequious tone of Clegg who isn’t even allowed to sit in the same room as his boss despite being paid all that money.
Monday at 9pm on Channel 4: Rape: Who’s On Trial? one of the most powerful and devastating programmes I’ve ever seen on the subject. Over 3 years we followed Avon and Somerset Police’s rape unit. Followed immediately at 1030 by a debate

A huge thank you to my whole team, past and present - and to everyone who supported me; it really helped. Special thanks to all who came to me with a story to tell. I did everything I could to honour your lives + the lives of LGBTQ people. I’ll continue to do that wherever it is.
I wake up every day and walk through the beautiful gardens of Murray Edwards and then our fabulous buildings and the Women’ Art Collection, Europe’s largest collection of art by women, and meet brilliant students and academics and I think I have the best job in the world

Delighted to be shortlisted for Best Speech Presenter at the ARIAS!
For BBC Radio 4 pods Marianna in Conspiracyland & Why Do You Hate Me - and Americast. On BBC Sounds.
I love doing them! Thanks for trusting me to investigate impact of disinformation, hate & algorithms online.
Tonight on UK Televison Channel Four, a programme was broadcast which exposed UN sex abuse across decades and the world. You need to watch it. Your bosses need to show it to you. If they don't, contact me. I commissioned it because I saw it. You can stop it.
So honoured that to mark Stephen Lawrence’s memory, Simon Woolley, our friend from Homerton College, inspired us all in conversation tonight. Simon told us of the key role of Operation Black Vote in the campaign to investigate Stephen’s murder. We agreed we must work for justice.
On Newsnight a statement I made was corrected. I had thought Bashir head of religion and ethics. Apparently ethics not in job description. So nobody onscreen in charge of ethics at BBC? Really? Who in charge of ethics generally? Anyone?
A sign of the times or maybe of my lack of time. Funeral directors have just put an advert through my door- a first in my life. What do they know about COVID-19 in London that I don’t? Quite fancy the embalming service.
Congratulations Melvyn Bragg on 1000 episodes of In Our Time. Your voice was my luxury on Desert Island Discs as a defence against insomnia, especially the episode on papal infallibility. But in truth you have done a brilliant job of disseminating big ideas without snobbery
Very excited to be speaking at Clifton Village LitFest on Saturday November 12 about lying politicians. To think I got into trouble for calling them liars!
I believe students should attend universities suited to their talents and that there are highly talented students in state schools who would be suited to Cambridge but don’t currently get the opportunity.
@dorotheabyrne
@PlasFron
If the population of students at Cambridge is to reflect the general UK population (presumably you mean in terms not only of sex, but gender, sexuality, ethnicity and disability), you move away from academic merit. Should Murray Edwards College not also reflect this diversity?
So many of us as women have been there in our younger lives. We knew a man was a liar but we couldn’t face the truth. Then there was a piece of information we couldn’t deny.
In the spirit of fuck it, I’m adding the great

Our President Dorothy Byrne (
@dorotheabyrne
) will feature on
@BBCRadio4
's Great Lives tomorrow at 16:30.
She will be championing Catherine of Siena, the 14th-century mystic who stood up to powerful men, lobbied the Popes, and became patron saint of Italy.
‘Sorry babe. I have heard that not needing a Prince is all the rage now.’ Paula Rego makes me laugh every morning over breakfast in the Murray Edwards College cafe at Cambridge.
@emilybell
Thank you! It’s definitely of my choosing. More than 15 years at the helm of C4’s fantastic News and Current Affairs is enough for the hardiest and a brilliant year to move on. I could never better this year and a great new part time role. Fortunate woman indeed.
I note that a philosopher has just been sacked by French television. Difficult to imagine British television employing a philosopher as a regular on-screen presence today.
The Fabulous new addition to our collection of women’s art at Murray Edwards College Cambridge. Lent by the equally fabulous Richard Heaton Warden of Robinson College. Juno Calypso. Not me in case you wondered.
#BBC
my last day on air. After 33 years, time to do something new. Proud of a few things: told the China story, fought for a fair workplace, gave away the back pay I won, wrote the book. But most of all grateful to audiences and brilliant colleagues. THE BEST. I’ll miss you. X
I’m watching lots of news programmes. But I have not seen some key people like Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and other leading figures. Please guide me as to where I can see tiptop Tories backing Boris Johnson as a teller of truth.
I've supported Ofcom in fostering diversity of views. But they've got this one wrong. They're creating a gulf between 'News' & 'Current Affairs' that doesn't exist; and they rely too much on audience perceptions. There has to be an editorial grip on what is impartial and fair.
One of the most important films we ever commissioned. I hope this will inspire the UN to take effective action. Hello UN. Anything you would like to say or even do?!?!
What everyone needs to know is that Channel Four in the UK last night broadcast what is the the most important ever film on the subject The UN Sex Abuse Scandal. I will send you a copy if your bosses don't . I was in charge of it, You need to know.
Great artists collide. Dido Powell in front of Eileen Cooper

Giant leap for women: early ‘lady’ astronomers have asteroids named in their honour. How times are changing at Cambridge. We look forward to welcoming the brilliant new Professor of Astrophysics Hiranya Peiris.
Laura said something really nice about me as her mentor so I declare an interest. But in this podcast, her clear message to young people from diverse background is,’You can be me’.
Check out that fab picture by Eileen Cooper which is in the Women’s Art Collection at Murray Edwards College Cambridge. There underneath is the fab artist herself!
Why was Florence Pugh naked? Did they run out of money to clothe her as there was certainly no dramatic justification for a fine actor to be short of a shirt. All that stuff about the universe and we women viewers had to put up with everyday sexism on earth.
I so enjoyed being interviewed by the terrific Isabel Camara for
@five_books

Big thanks to the brilliant Michael Mosley who has kindly agreed to talk to members of the charity PMRGCAuk - which helps people with these two autoimmune diseases - on October 19 2pm.
