These models, I’m sure, are unlikely to replicate CSAM when prompted. (Although with jailbreaking etc, who knows.) The issues I see, as ever, are the reckless barreling forward to advance a technology that no one asked for, an attitude that everything is content for the machine

I have to say… I really dislike framing that puts the onus on individual consumers to correct Apple’s bad behavior. This is not a cycle that will be broken by a small margin of people deciding not to purchase a new device.

Everything else aside, wouldn’t it be neat to see the universe trend toward making more of these numbers invisible, rather than the opposite? They don’t incentivize healthy behavior! There is a reason predatory mobile games have so many different scoring systems and currencies.

This is a fantastic, nuanced, and troubling story. It says a lot about 1) the inertia behind cloud platforms many of use every day without a second thought, 2) the content moderation challenge they present, 3) the complete lack of customer service at big tech companies…

This is the classic problem for public-facing accounts on algorithmically sorted platforms like Facebook, Snapchat Discover or Stories or whatever it’s called, etc. Feels bad and possibly depresses engagement, and leads to over-the-top attention-seeking (bad) publishing behavior.
