The week after my son moved to campus a student was assaulted and he ran to where the screaming was coming from called & waited with her until police arrived. Today the police called him to say the dept and the young lady want to honor him in a couple weeks for what he did😭😭😭

His cremains are right here with me. I’ll take him home to Barbados when it’s safe. Never possessed cremains before his. Took me months to be ready to receive them. Sometimes I lose my breath thinking about everything. This is cruel. Thanks for the love, I feel & appreciate it❤️

My best friend since 8th grade is battling breast cancer, (after her dx was missed by *two* hospitals) & I went with her to get her chemo yesterday and SO many people were there by themselves getting their chemo in one big cold room. May we all heal from whatever ails us🙏🏽

I said some things on a panel (per usual) & in response to a comment about how to get more WM involved in anti-racism work, a WM said “didn’t Malcolm X say don’t depend on WM to solve your problems?” and my spirit is MF vexed, do you hear me?? VEXED.

I got tired of us trying & failing to find an illustrator for my Social Epidemiology to Combat Unjust Residential Evictions (SECURE) study, so I made these. Which one do y'all like most?! This study is focused on Black women, families, and communities in Metro-Detroit, MI.

I gave a talk a couple years ago and an elder Black woman asked me “what ever happened to the wives of the men in the Tuskegee experiment?” I think about the families and descendants of these men a lot. The last widow of a man forced into the Tuskegee experiment died in 2009.

I could barely function yesterday. I have a clear commitment to uplifting, mentoring, and supporting Black women. I have never experienced what feels like sabatoge and hate from another Black woman. Sharing b/c I suspect others have felt this pain.

I'm a 1st gen Pell grantee. I had 5 pubs last year, & so far, 11 this year. I shared this w/ my students during our lab meeting today and was shook b/c I felt Lucille Clifton's words in my spirit at that moment.

My 1st graduating doctoral student published her 1st paper from her dissertation, coauthored with some SEED Lab members, & this is my 1st senior authored paper😭🙏🏽✊🏽 Read & cite @DrBFrancis ! She went HARD on this *for* Black mothers! SO proud! 🤩✨🌟

I have *seriously* considered resigning my position as chair-elect of the epidemiology section of @PublicHealth b/c my experience as a new leader & member has been < great. But, when I take the chair in Oct. 2021, my intention is to blaze trails & do my underdog thing, per usual

This morning I was so overwhelmed, I could barely get out of bed. This evening one of my students thanked me for teaching & for being myself & was so excited to show me her braids are the same ombré color as mine! Representation matters! 😭✊🏽❤️Keep the faith & *don’t give up*!

Something else is on my heart: Organizations: if you have white leaders who are paid to lead, they should not be asking BIPOC people for advice/brainstorming re: what to do or how to act. Us being *informal* thought leaders, while y'all pay white people to lead, is violent.

Last night my 11y/o cried when she heard about the POLICE VIOLENCE at the protests. She said I have to do something nice for everybody in this house 2nite or I won't be able to sleep😭 This is the LIFE-COURSE TERROR & TRAUMA OF RACISM that y'all don't see b/c u don't have to.
