Since introducing **Counterfactually Augmented Data**, we've worked to clarify a theory of what's going on here & **why/when can this technique yield out-of-domain benefits**. Check out our latest efforts. [Joint work w @dkaushik96 & @setlur_amrith ]

Stoked to share this paper: We leverage MTurkers not to label but to revise documents to accord with ***counterfactual labels***. Resulting data enables us to disentangle “the difference that makes the difference”. Herculean effort by @dkaushik96 (1/n)

Over 50% of the AI PhDs who leave the US cite immigration issues as the reason why they left while DoD is finding it hard to recruit data scientists and AI experts. Congress must listen to the national security leaders who’re urging action on this front.

If the United States is to remain globally competitive in technology and engineering, updating our immigration systems to meet the needs of critical industries should be a top priority. 📝 @LEHogg

Let's take a look at how CMU previously supported it's URM populations. (Views strictly personal) The university recently had a map of Pittsburgh on display that left out predominantly black neighborhoods. 1/6

🚨 Harnessing AI's power responsibly needs nuanced regs, not simplistic solutions. But today’s calorie-free media panic, where AI = nukes or pandemics, often clouds the discussion. @MattKorda + I write of the dangers this poses, and offer a path forward.

🚨🚨 The defense industry is facing a critical shortage of high-skilled STEM workforce, making the need for foreign talent particularly acute. Dr. Mark Lewis (DoD/ @POTUS45 ) & I write in National Defense that Congress must address this critical issue now.

Last week, @cmugsa talked to @RepDebDingell and @repmarkpocan , and laid our concerns w.r.t a proposed rule from DHS limiting the length of student visas. This morning, joined by 104 of their colleagues in Congress, they sent this letter to DHS opposing the proposed rule.

PhD admissions season... I’m proud to have been rubbish back then. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I had a 3.6 gpa, small school, took the GREs 3 times bc my score was shite, got rejected from most places I applied (few since $$$ application fees). Lots of researchers only grow out of being given a chance 🌷
