Congratulations President-elect
@JoeBiden
and Vice President-elect
@KamalaHarris
, and to the American people who voted in record numbers showing the strength and vibrancy of our democracy.
I am pleased to announce that I've accepted the role of Director of the
@HooverInst
@Stanford
. It will be an honor to lead the historic institution into its second century.
Today is a resounding affirmation of the strength of our democracy – and the importance of the great institutions that were given to us by the founding fathers. May God bless America and those who will lead us.
Let us remember to say their names even though it has been 57 years since a bomb in Birmingham shook our nation's conscience.

Carole Robertson
Cynthia Wesley
and my friend
Denise McNair
God rest their souls and may we never forget.
I am honored to begin my work as Director of the
@HooverInst
@Stanford
today. What we do here—promoting ideas, the value of free inquiry, and the preservation of open dialogue—is the backbone of democracy, and I look forward to leading it into the future.
Queen Elizabeth II led a life entirely dedicated, not to herself, but to the service of her country and subjects. Her Majesty remained always a steady hand, even throughout the most trying of times. Our hearts both break for and stand in solidarity with our British friends.
Happy 100th birthday to my good friend Henry Kissinger. He never stops learning, never stops thinking and nevers stop looking for answers to the world’s hard problems.
Happy Birthday, Henry. And many happy returns.
I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mikhail Gorbachev. He was a man who tried to deliver a better life for his people. His life was consequential because, without him and his courage, it would not have been possible to end the Cold War peacefully.
On this solemn day, may we always remember those we lost as well as the extraordinary bravery we witnessed. Our nation is resilient. Let us come together once again to address the challenges we face and work toward the ideals that unite us as Americans.
Education is the great equalizer. Let us do the important work of making a quality education available to every child in this country.
Thank you to
@SenatorTimScott
,
@RepMoolenaar
and the School Choice Caucus for hosting this important discussion.
I believe a good education provides a lifeline for kids who feel stuck in poverty, as I did.
Today, I met with Sec.
@CondoleezzaRice
& my School Choice Caucus colleagues to discuss ways to extend that lifeline to all young Americans and protecting parents' rights to be involved.
President George Herbert Walker Bush was the epitome of a public servant. He loved America with all of his heart and served her as fully and completely as anyone ever has.

The way to avoid confrontation with Russia in the future is to help Ukraine push back the invader now. That is the lesson of history that should guide us, and it lends urgency to the actions that must be taken.
My thoughts with Bob Gates on Ukraine:
I was deeply troubled to hear of the death of Alexei Navalny, who gave voice to the hopes and dreams of the Russian people. His death will not extinguish their desire for freedom, and one day the tyranny that oppresses them will end. May Navalny rest in peace.
Today we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives to defend us at the frontlines of freedom. May their families find comfort in the prayers of a grateful nation. And may God grant eternal rest to those who have been lost.
Congratulations to Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson at this historic moment. Our country's capacity for change continues to be remarkable and reaffirms the strength of our democracy.
Henry Kissinger was a towering world figure, a strategic thinker and easily one of the most influential Secretaries of State in American history. He never stopped learning, never stopped thinking and never stopped looking for answers to the world’s hard problems.
Dianne Feinstein will always be remembered as an extraordinary and influential figure in American political history. She was principled and dedicated.
I was grateful to her for stepping across the aisle and introducing me to the Senate in my confirmation process. Rest in Peace.
Don Rumsfeld was a remarkable and committed public servant. He was also a good friend and a steady presence throughout the many trials of the post-9/11 world. I will miss him as a colleague and as a friend. Joyce and the family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
I enjoyed joining
@bariweiss

John Lewis was a giant among men. He loved his country so much that he was willing to give his life as a young man to change it. As the "conscience of the Congress," he held our country accountable to the promise of equal justice for all.
Remembering today the legacy left by the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court, Sandra Day O’Connor. She was a
@Stanford
alumna and spent her post-court years advocating for civics education. She was an important trailblazer in the American story and a friend. Rest in Peace.
.
@krauthammer
We have lost a voice of reason and a powerful intellect in Democracy’s cause. Rest in peace, Charles Krauthammer. Our memories of you will live on.
Thanks to

crew — so much fun. Army-Navy is truly a special and inspiring tradition. And, yes Wisconsin pick was a stretch — but long live VaTech!
It was an honor to receive the George H.W. Bush Points of Light Award. President Bush was the epitome of a public servant and lit a path for so many others. Thank you to
@PointsofLight
for continuing his work today.
Madeleine Albright was not only a trailblazer for women worldwide, but a fearless fighter for freedom on behalf of all humanity. She changed the world in remarkable ways. May she rest in peace.
Lee Elder exuded dignity and strength. He was a gentleman and a legend. I am grateful that I could watch him participate in the ceremonial tee shot with Gary Player and Jack Nickalus at last year's Masters. Rest in peace, Lee Elder.

This week we welcomed back to the
@HooverInst
Secretary
@MikePompeo
for our fall meetings. It was great to discuss current national security and foreign policy issues together.
Secretary George Shultz was a great American statesman and true patriot in every sense of the word. Now, we must carry on the work that he challenged us to do – to love freedom and opportunity and to never lose a thirst for learning. May he rest in peace.
Saddened to learn of the passing of Peter McNab, who contributed greatly to the sport of hockey and was a fellow Denver Pioneers classmate. May he rest in peace.
It was an honor to join President Bush, President Kikwete, and many others to commemorate 20 years of PEPFAR. The program stands as a shining example of humanity coming together to do good and the progress that can result when America focuses its strengths toward a common cause.
It’s always great to be back at Pebble Beach. Congratulations to my partner this week and fellow Stanford Cardinal
@bwu97
on finishing 2nd, and to tournament champion
@JustinRose99
and team champions Ben Silverman and
@AaronRodgers12
It was an honor to be named 2022 Ambassador of Golf by the PGA TOUR. Golf provides wonderful opportunities on and off the course, brings people together, and helps to bridge differences. To be an envoy for golf is a privilege, and it’s a joy to connect others with the sport.
This week marks one year since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and one year of Ukrainians’ brave fight for their country.
I had the honor of meeting with
@OMarkarova
. She is a strong voice for her fellow citizens on the front lines defending democracy.
I recently joined

Any call to action will be empty if it does not move us to individual responsibility. We all have a role to play in moving our country forward, in ensuring that our democracy delivers not just for those who have but also for those who seek and for those in need.
#Juneteenth
is an observance of a very special moment in our nation’s history. May we come together to celebrate our country’s continued progress toward its ideals and remain committed to advancing it.
Today we remember 9/11. Everything changed that day and yet we found a way to call upon values that were timeless — community, patriotism, honor and resilience. Let us hold those lessons in our hearts and minds on this anniversary and as we move forward together into the future.
I'm thrilled to announce my upcoming doc film, American Creed. My friend, David M. Kennedy, & I joined forces to explore the question of "what does it mean to be American?" Check your local PBS listings for air times on February 27th.
Her service to this country and the legacy she leaves behind will live on. May she rest in peace with her beloved Marty—thank you for a life well lived and a job well done.
I am shocked and saddened by the assassination of Prime Minister Abe. He was an extraordinary partner for President Bush through many challenges.
My thoughts and sympathies are with his family and the people of Japan at this difficult time.
Today we recognize the service of our Veterans and their families. May we come together to honor and serve them in our daily lives, and commit ourselves to strengthening America in their example. Thank you for your service.
#VeteransDay
Today we remember those brave patriots who sacrificed so that we may live in freedom. May they rest in peace eternally.
And let us acknowledge today those who continue to defend us far from home and family. May God protect them.
Brent Scowcroft was the very definition of a public servant --- a man of integrity, grace, love of country, and humility. He was the standard for every National Security Adviser and a role model for so many others who sought to serve our country.
As united Americans, we can then turn our fears into faith, hope, compassion and action. And then we can accept and carry out our shared responsibility to build “a more perfect union.”
1/ Today we remember America's great patriot, Dr. Martin Luther King. Dr. King led America's "second founding" -- challenging us to be not something else but just what we say we are.
